My Gaona family is from Terepetio, Mex. My Grandfather's name is Jesus De Magdelena Gaona. The origin of our last name is from the Spanish Arabic combinations. To my knowledge, we settled the lower parts of New Mexico when it was controled by Spain. We also do have a family coat of arms indicating pictorial history. There aren't that many of us Gaona's around that know this. I'm still trying to find more info about us. Hope this helps!

My name is Sergio Gaona Ortega I was born in Morelia Michuacan Mexico. Growing up I thought the last name came from natives in mexico btu I saw that it comes from north of spain. The family last name ends with me and my sister. I have seen alot of gaona recently on facebook. Besides that all I can do is just research the family in Michuacan and see the rest of the history from the city records.

Hola relatives in the sense we all share the same last name. My family is from a rancho named Agua Verde Michoacan México. Also have relatives in Patzcuaro, Nueva Italia, Uruapan and other cities y ranchos en Michoacan and for all I know all over the Americas. I have never actually met anyone else with our last name here northern califas. It would be so awesome to get as many of us together in one area to trade family history and try to decipher our origins. I've heard that its from Arab/Jewish descent, the last name Gaon is of Jewish descent, I know back in the day Jews and Arabs and Muslims mingled around and for 7 or 9 hundred years Muslims conquered and ruled Spain therefore doing some more mingling with Ethpañoles (yes I said it with a lisp) lol. So surely over the years the Gaon name evolved to Gaona. Once the spaniards reconquered Spain years later they moved to the new world aka las America's bringing with them Gaonas and then the mingling began all over again with the Americas natives thus giving our 10xgreatgrandparents and finally us. Wether they came over as slaves, Muslims or royalty or just regular plane average joes we all ended up with the same last name. By the way my people all of this is based on pure word of mouth and little research that I've done, but to be honest it makes a lot of sense to me that its close to the actual truth. Till then keep it going and stay strong Gaonas.
