I hope you have been seeing the posts I have made in response to RichardGamsby's posts. I am thoroughly confused- Gamsby's are everywhere!! haha Remember, that this is a friend's family, not mine. He knows nothing other than Amos Gamsby was his father and his mother is living but is over 90 and is not talking about family.
Based on what you and RichardGamsby have posted, I have been trying to put this family tree together and find the source documents.
I found several census results for James M. Gamsby. In 1880 his niece, Mary Burns was living with the family. So I presume a sister of his, or of his wife, married a Burns. In 1870, James and Catherine had Mary A Mangen, age 61, born in Nova Scotia, living with them. This is probably Catherine's mother, so Mangan is most likely Mary's maiden name. I have not found a marriage record for James and Catherine, so I can't be sure. Their children seem to be William Robert, Russell, Fletcher, George and one that is listed in 1870 that looks like "Abner" but the age makes me think is may be William Robert.
Now, on to Fletcher Gamsby, father of James Madison and married to Lucina Fairman. This has me totally confused. I find Flether (sic) J Gamsby, age 45 in the 1850 census in Canaan, Essex, Vermont. It looks like he is married to a Ellinor, age 41. Others listed: James M 19, Lcinda J 18, George 11, Julia 9. Then, I find a Fletcher again in 1880 in Colebrook, New Hampshire, age 74 with Lucina F Gamsby, age 54. I also see lots of Gamsby's around in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. Is it possible that this is two different families, related somehow? The ages and dates just don't fit - especially for Lucina (or Lcinda) and who was Ellinor???? Can you straighten this out for me? I haven't even looked at George and Polly or John and Margaret yet - any dates and places to help me with that?
