I have some info on early Gamages in Britain. They seem to first appear in Gwent, South Wales, and feature prominently in Elizabethan times. I have a Word doc I can email upon request if anyone is interested...?

I have just found your message on sharing information on the Gamage family. Your message is over a year old, but if you are still willing to share I would like to have a copy. I have just started working on this family. My husband's mother was a Gammage from middle Georgia.

Thank you so much for any help you can give me. I am willing to reinburse cost of copping and postage.

I am very interested in the Gamage family and have traced my family back to the 1600's. I do have information that links them to Wales so this could be very helpful to me. I would appreciate it if you will send me your information. Thanks Ellen

Dear Brian and Ellen,

Would be delighted to receive any Gamage/Gammage information you can supply. I have traced my family back to mid 1700s in Northampton and also have some details of family in Wales but have not be able to link them. I also have some de Gamaches information linking the Gamage line to my mother's relatives. Very happy to communicate with you. Please contact me on:

Thank you.

Best wishes, Ian

Brian, I would be thankful if you can share your information with me. Several of the Gammage clan are doing research into the Gammage history. There are some links that we haven't been able to make, but I'm sure some day we will make the connection.

Only just started with genealogy, now hooked!!!
My Gam(m)ages come from Suffolk as far as 1746, and now I'm stuck.
Read about the Gamages from Normandy settling in Herefordshire after Will the Conq. Do you know if it is all a story or is there any truth? Would love to connnect with them.
Also AW Gamage from the Dept. Store in London rumoured to be my grandfathers cousin. Anybody have any info on him?
Regards
Mary (Gammage) Anness

Hello Mary,

The de Gamache name certainly did come from Normandy and on some lists de Gamages is listed as being with William the Conqueror but this apsect is not proven beyond reasonable doubt. It is my understanding that there were two brothers in England in the 11th century; one went to Wales and was at Coity Castle. Another went to Gloucestershire. I understand that one brother returned to Normandy and left all property to the other. There was certainly some connection to Herefordshire but when that happened I cannot prove. Probably after the other two.

The London Gamage families are said to descend from the Wales line when two brothers went to London to support Henry II and stayed. It is my understanding that those lines retained the spelling "Gamage" in most cases whereas "Gammage" seems to have developed out of Somerset/Northampton. Again there is speculation about this.

Concerning the London store and your grandfather - given that I believe that all Gammage family from England are connected they certainly would be cousins of some sort but given the recent event you mention there should be records to allow this to be checked. There must be a tree for AW Gamage somewhere as well and if you grandfather is a close cousin that connection should appear - perhaps start at the 1881 census and work through the 1891 census and look at the 1901 census.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Ian

That would be great - my father Peter Gordon Gamage was directly related to Barbara Gamage of Coity Castle in Wales
