Henry Gamage - lived in Swansea Wales in 1835
I am looking for information on the family of Henry Gamage who lived in Swansea Wales in 1835. He had a daughter Ruth (b. about 1850), Maria (b. 1835/1836), and Mary Louise (b. 1852). In 1862 he lived in Flint Parish Northop, England.

Re: Henry Gamage - lived in Swansea Wales in 1835
Hi,
I have census info on Gamages in Swansea 1841/51 and there was a Henry and his family with wife Margaret, son Henry 8 and daughters Maria 6 and Hannah 4, living in Upper High Street. He was a joiner born c. 1811, wife same age, all born in Swansea.
My interest is an ancestor of the same line (probably going back to c1300), and who were local lords of the Ogwr lands in 1500's. I haven't linked the Swansea Gamages to earlier ones yet, so if you have info this would be good to have.
This is the 1851 info: 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE HENRY HD W 41 GLA SWANSEA 2466 554 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE MARIA DA U 16 GLA SWANSEA 2466 554 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE HANNAH DA U 14 GLA SWANSEA 2466 554 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE MARGARET DA - 8 GLA SWANSEA 2466 554 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE MARY DA - 6 GLA SWANSEA 2466 554 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE DANIEL SO - 3 GLA SWANSEA 2466 554 181 HIGH STREET GAMAGE RUTH DA - 11M GLA SWANSEA

Only Dorothy, Ann and Maria were not born in Glamorgan (where? see 1851 census) Ann and Maria (c.1801). Dorothy (c.1767)? ------------------------------------------------
I've discovered the origins of the name and some history of the family up to the 1500's, but have'nt made the connectionss to bridge the years between. I came across a referrence to a John Gamage in 1740's as witness signatory to 4 documents of the burgess of Swansea - deeds etc. I guess he was a town official...
To date, I see there in the census there is a William Gamage born 1777 (?) father is John and who is a probable ancester to Henry.
I'd like to be able trace these Gamages of Swansea to the Gamage's, lords of Glamorgan, mentioned in several places. I think we can safely say we have origins going back to the first norman lords after 1066 who came from the 'Gameche' region around Rouen.
The only Swansea Gamage connection for sure is a Mary Gamage of Coity castle marrying in to the powerful Herbet family of Swansea
More to follow, hopefully...
Brian

Re: Henry Gamage - lived in Swansea Wales in 1835
Greetings all, My Gammage connection is in Northamptonshire. I suspect that prior to 1480 it was in Wales. Probably no links available before then but it would be nice to find a link to the Welsh lines. Best wishes, Ian Gammage iang@grapevine.com.au
