Gama is a name that originates in northern Portugal and spreads south as lands were taken from the Moors. People moved around in the peninsula and so did their family names. One old Portuguese town (Olivenca) and part of Spain since the XVII century has a big concentration of Gama's as the castle was given to a Gama when it was taken away from the Moors. Of course many Portuguese also migrated to Spanish colonies and vice versa. Antonio de la Gama was one of the first governors of Puerto Rico and I believe the name is still predominant there. The most predominant Gama was the portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama
