I'm trying to find any info on Gama Family from Coimbra, Portugal. My grandfather came over sometime in early 1900-1920. We live in RI and have since his arrival. I would appreciate any help I can get.

contact me if you want, my phones are public, I'm in westborough, MA (only gama here), first name Rui. I'm portuguese, and my family comes from the arganil, coimbra area. To my knowledge, there are 2 family branches in that area. Rumor has it (maybe one day I'll investigate) that during the portuguese civil war, 2 brothers on the losing side run away to hide in the mountains. In Portugal, the family branches are mostly located in the north west part of the country, in a province known as Minho. Is in that part of the country that the family originates in the Iberian peninsula (not sure how long and where they came from). What I l know is that Gama is of Jewish origins (Vasco da Gama was jewish). As the christian conquer from the Mours proceded south, members of the family were given areas south and east of Lisbon. A branch settled in Sines (where the navigators came) and another in Olivenca, now part of Spain. Many also helped colonize the Azores islands. Because of this mobility, you'll find many south and central americans with the name Gama (both on the spanish and portuguese speaking countries), you'll find many indians (from India) Gama, many africans with the name Gama. The 6th governor of Puerto Rico was a Gama (Antonio de la Gama), with origins to the previous portuguese Olivenca area.
