I have a person in my tree who has me stumped. The only info I have comes from Australian Naturalization documents that don't seem to add up.
My persons name is James Galloway & he states he was born in Jan 1854 in New Orleans, America, although there seems to be other evidence (marriage & death record) that states he was born in Trieste, Austria. And parents names on his death record are George Galloway & Mary, which can't be relied upon either.
On the Australian Naturalization docs (handwritten letter to authorities) he also states that he moved to Cape Town, South Africa at the age of about 5yrs ( so that means it would have been around the year 1859). He also states he was naturalized in South Africa but had since lost those documents and that he took part in the Zulu War (1879), though he doesn't say what his roll in the war was.
The same document states that he sailed from Glasgow, Scotland in to Rockhampton, Qld, Australia in or around Oct 1882-83 upon the ship called 'Selkirkshire' (which happens to be the ship his wife-to-be sailed in on). I also know from electorall rolls that his occupation throughout his life here in Australia was that of a Seaman/sailor.
I am really at my wits end on where to search for anything that can back up his story. Does anyone have any suggestions?
