Classification: Query
Surnames: Gallaway, Galloway, Green, Ragan, Cleveland, Cruthirds
The William Galloway of the Irene Dabney Gallaway book (IDG for short) was born 1782 NC, but I have never seen his middle initial as J. As far as I know, his middle initial is not known, though I think some have theorized it may be M though I don't know the source. If that initial is given in IDG's book, I missed it. That being said (& he is my direct line as well), he is known to have married Polly Ragan & it is believed also Mary Green. At first I was skeptical of that 2nd marriage because there was nothing to convince me it was the same William. However, William's line seems to be the only Galloways in that time frame who were in Elbert Co, GA. As the other poster said, we have found reference to her being Mary Green in a family Bible. DAR application of Beulah Cruthirds that included the summary of the bible that belonged to Jane Galloway Germany.  It said basically the following "My mother was Jane Cleveland (born 16 Jan 1829) and my father was William Ragan Galloway, son of William Galloway and "Polly" Mary Regan, born 11-4-1817. He had three brothers and three sisters two died young.  They were Nancy, Martha, Michael Beaver, Matthew, William Ragan, Levi C. and Sinia born 22 April 1822, Lexington GA.  "Polly" Ragan Galloway was their mother.  She died shortly after the birth of Sinia who was cared for by her Aunt Sinia Scogins Galloway.  William married Mary Green, called Polly, after his death, she moved to Alabama with Sinia Galloway Wilson and her husband William Wilson." (*Many of us are also convinced William had a son named Cornelius T. who also married in Elbert Co, GA).

As the other poster stated there has been a LOT of confusion where people have crossed the William Galloway of Henry Co, AL line & our William Galloway (of Oglethorpe to Elbert Co, GA). The OTHER William Galloway was born about the same time frame (ca 1782), but was born in SC (supposedly Darlington). Our William Galloway is last known to be in Elbert Co, GA in the 1840 Elbert Co, GA census. As the above Bible / DAR app indicates, if Mary Green was indeed his 2nd wife, it would hardly make sense for our William to then be in Henry Co, AL when she was not, especially when most of the Galloway siblings of William were in Lawrence Co, AL about that time. One thing to watch for when using other people's data as a guideline is if the Polly Ragan or Mary Green are given as the wives in Henry Co, AL &/or a daughter Anzilla is given as the daughter of our William, that person has the lines crossed. I have even found those wives crossed with an "Abraham" also given as Henry Co, AL. (I know your post did not mistakenly refer to this Henry Co, AL bunch, but I thought I would make sure you were aware of this issue).

The exact date of death for our William & Polly Ragan Galloway & their burial locations are not known. I've seen estimated dates of death of between 1817 & 1830 for Polly Ragan & since William married Mary Green in Elbert in 1830 & was there for the 1840 census, it is assumed she died there. William has not been located after that 1840 census, but Mary Green's whereabouts are not known in 1850. In 1860 she was living in DeKalb Co, AL with William's daughter Sinia Galloway Wilson. (William's son, Matthew A. Galloway (my line) had sons that went to DeKalb Co, AL about that time frame, so that makes sense).

As to the 1840 Elbert Co, GA census for William, he is usually or always listed as Calloway in that census. There were Calloways in Wilkes Co, GA (that is another of my direct lines), but to my knowledge there were none in Elbert. Also, I have seen the Calloway / Galloway error in other places. Since several of William's children were married there about that time, I don't doubt that it is actually our William GALLOWAY.

As to a source for the marriage, here is one:

Galloway, Britain Ponder, Ann 2/22/1820 A077

To my knowledge, the only one of those not KNOWN tied to Matthew Galloway is the Thomas Galloway. I think I have him traced after Oglethorpe (to Newton Co, GA) & he was born ca 1785 VA. He cannot logically be Matthew's son as Matthew had a son named Thomas (b/ 1801) with his second wife. I wonder if he might be a nephew or something?

This is probably more than you wanted to know or you may have had most of this, but thought I would share it with you.
