I have been doing some genealogy research on The Gajda side of my family. The village in Poland where my grandfather came from was Kilkowa, Poland (formally in the province of Galcia in Austria.) It is near Tarnow. His name was Wojciech Jan Gajda and his parents were Wojciech (Adalbertis) Gajda and Anna Michalski. His fathers parents were John and Sophie Gajda. Our Gajda's went to Holyoke Massachusetts, Wojciech, Rosalia, John, Jan and Zophia and their son Joseph.

Some Gajda's from that village went to Volunt, PA. They were Ignacy, who was meeting his brother Stach and Jan, who was meeting his brother Stanley.

Katarzyna Gajda was also from that village and I think she went to Taunton, MA. The handwriting is poor on that one.

Some went to NY: Stanislaw Gajda

It was a small village so I feel they must be related in some way and I would like to find out how. Please contact me if you have a connection!

I am from the Volant PA Gajda family. My paternal grandfather, Jakob Gajda was a farmer in Volant. He married Aleksandra (Seergae - americanized spelling). They had six children. Mary, John, Charles, Chester, Nellie and Genevieve, four of which are still living.

Jakob died in the 1950's and Aleksandra in 1980, I believe. They spoke Polish at home, as did their children. Aleksandra immigrated here at the age of approximately 13, with her mother, leaving her father and brothers behind. I have never heard any stories of Jakob and how he got to be in Volant.

I am a grandadughter of Stanley Gajda who married algorratta Kwiecien. I have done a lot of research on our segment of the Gajda's. Stanley arrived in 1913 on the Antonina from Hamburg, Germany, and in 1915 married Margaret (name changed) Kwiecien in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They in turn had 6 children. The 6 children were Stanley, Steven, Stella, Dorothy ( born as Theodora Agnes), Edward and Mary. I am Mary's daughter.

In researching Ellis Island records I found that Stanley and his brother John both went from Stanajowic, Russia (cannot find what city that actually is now) to Volunt Pa to work in tin mills. This appears to be the same area that your relatives may have migrated to. What is also interesting is that Stanley Gajda's point of contact was from Mass.

In further research I found that John and Stanley also appear to indicate they know of a Jan ? Gajda??.

In the immigration records for Margaret Kwiecien the records reflect her point of contact was Jacob Kwiecien who lived in the same town that Stanley and John go to - I assume this is where Stanley meets Margaret and they move to Cleveland.

I am trying to find the Gajda's that Stanley may be relatives with as he visited in 1912 and went to Mass.

I think I found the town of STOJANOWICE corrordiates: 5014 2034 N Poland 140.5 miles S of Warsaw. You can see a map by doing a search for the town at this address: http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm

I do not know for sure I am related to the family in Volant, however they did come from the same village as my grandfather and it was small. Have you tried to contact M. Gajda Butler as well? I know she has living Gajda's in Volant.

I looked up your Stanley's manifest but did not see a MA connection, could you give me some more info on that? Was there a town listed? Also checked the census for 1920 and 1930 in PA and really couldn't make a connection there either. Looking forward to hearing from you.

BY 1930 Stanley and Margaret have moved to Cleveland Ohio and have 5 children and a boarder living with them. I did some research on the tin mill and steel mill industry and when the tin mill industry in Pa started to go under a lot of immigrants went to Ohio and started to work in the mills in Ohio - thus John and Stanlet Gajda are found in the 1930s in Ohio.

I found another unrelated family of Gajda's in Adams, Massachusetts. At the PGSA.org site they were in the listings of the Polish Churchs Jubilee Books.St Stanislaus Kostka is the Parish. Here is the page: http://www.pgsa.org/database/stan_results.cfm?Lastname=gajda...

You can cut and paste it into the address window.

Klikowa is outside of Tarnow. If you go to this site: www.MapaPolski.pl and type in Klikowa near the word Pokaż you will get a great map of the area. You can zoom in or out using the radio buttons. Also there is a site put up by a VW beatle club that shows Klikowa today. That is located at: http://www.boguslawk.solutions.net.pl/klikowa0602/index.htm

There is also a Polish Atlas written in Polish that I have not been able to get a translation for. "Slownik Geograficzny" (1890-1902). I have the translation for my grandmother's village and it is a real window on their life and times.

This area is one of the poorest in Poland. There were many years of wars, drought, and famine in the decades before my grandfather came to America. It seems to be well known as a equstrian center today, as a lot of sites for horse shows were returned when I searched for Klikowa on the net.

I have generated a list of the people from this village that were listed on the Ellis Island site. (if Klikowa was spelled correctly) It was a small area and many people were related though marriges. What was your grandmothers name? Do you have any other names from Klikowa? Where did she emmigrate to?

Attached is a picture from the 1940's that is from relatives in the Klikowa. You can see it was an agricultural area by the background.

Hope this helps, Rosanna
