My grandfather John Gida, also known as Jan Gajda, came from Russia; Poland. He was married to Katherine (sp?) Palach (sp?) and I think to a Nellie. He lived in Allegheny County in PA in the 1910's, 1920's, and 1930's. Some of his children were Alex, Stan, Frank, Walter, John, Cassie, Anna, Helen, and Wanda. My father is Frank Gida. Later the family moved to CA. I have had little luck in tracing this family line. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My grandfather was John Gida-his father was Matthew Gajda. I saw listings for your family while I was searching the census records for mine. My family is in Orange County New York. Matthew Gida married Maria Valusek and she had family in PA. Do you think our Gidas could be from the same family? Gida is not a common name.

Dear Dawn,
I do not know of anyone named Matthew Gajda in my family. Although, I did name my son Matthew. I have not had any luck in finding any family beyond my grandfather. Where the heck did my grandmother go? My father was born in PA and she died a few years later, but I can find no records of her.

Good luck with your search.

I do not know much at all about my Gajda family, except that my father's parents came from Poland and settles in McKeesport, PA in the early part of the 1900's. They changed their name to Gida.

Did you locate their manifest? Did they come thru Ellis Island? www.ellisislandrecords.org
If your ancestors were naturalized citizens or had social security numbers than those forms would have a place of birth. How about the church they attended ?
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com Social Security Death Index
If not naturalized but lived pass 1940 than there should be an Alien Registration Form to locate. How about a 1910, 1920 and 1930 census?
