I'm trying to find information concerning Elsie Gracie Gainey. I was in contact with someone who's uncle knew her. But something happened & they would no longer return my emails. I know there are not happy stories concerning Elsie Gracie. They have to do with her husband George Alan Black. I'm not one to be offended or embarrassed by what you turn up with family searches. I would appreciate if anyone knows of her pass history. I came into this family after she died. I would have loved to talk to her. Thank you, Donna

GAINEY/GANEY/GANY, William and Thomas

Believe a William Gainey moved into Chowan County, NC from Isle of Wight, Virginia. William received a land grant in March of 1713 in Chowan County. His will was settled in November 1739 in Bertie County, NC. His son Thomas was executor. Thomas subsequently moved with his wife Martha and sons, Annanias and Stephen, into the Marion, SC area and settled on Catfish Creek.

Does anyone have knowledge of William Gainey of Chowan County, NC? Or does anyone know anything about his parents in Isle of Wight County, Virginia?

From what I gather Matilda was a Grooms (maiden name) whom were of the Pee Dee Tribe....In SC alot of natives were classified as white or mulatto...Matilda and her husband are mysteries to most...everyone I have asked for more details have hit dead ends...That being said it is a very good chance of Pee Dee blood but not to sure about Cherokee... The Grooms family from Cheraw/Chesterfield have long been known to be of Pee Dee decent

Hello
Matilda Gainey is my 3x great grandmother (Jack > Duncan (Gilbert) > Arthur). Any information you have would be great. I have only been able to see that she was the head of household/property owner through census records.
The family rumors is that there is Cherokee/Pee Dee on that side of the family and I read that during those times Native Americans could be marked as M or W for race.

Otis Rush a white slave owner from South Carolina brought my great great great grandmother Katie Johnson and some other slaves to Texas with him ,so somehow we are related. Will try to do more research on the names. Good to know you cousin.

I have some info about Millie Newsome Shoemake Gainey that I will gladly share, a lot of it rumors of course but even unsourced info can lead to valid data.

Your father, Robert Gainey, was my grandfather's half brother. My grandfather is Wade Hampton Gainey. His father is Henry Lee Gainey and Wade's mother was Melita Grooms. Henry Lee's last wife was Barzilla, "Zilla", and was married to her when he died. there are 26 siblings, I think, and I don't have all the names, but the ones I do have are: Lillie, Purdy, Lebraun, Arthur, Millie, Wade, Barzilla, Arizona, Ruth, Sussie Rebecca, Lawrence, Joseph, Mable, Woodrow, Bertha, Coyt, William, Robert, Grace, Houston, Edward...
If you, or anyone else would like to talk back and forth about "This Gainey" family, feel free to email me jesusfirst2113@gmail.com I have copies of a few census pages from the library in Florence and I actually have Uncle Arthur's draft registration card for WW I (a copy of it.). He was the only one of the siblings I met and got to know because he came to see my grandfather (Wade Hampton Gainey) often.

Gainey's son, from his second marriage. I'm not sure if we are Gainey's, or what?! We have just recently moved from Summerville, SC to Lugoff, SC and I plan on visiting the area where my grandfather lived. (It's not far from me.) Are you from SC? I would love to talk to you. Adeline was listed as white or mulatto on census record and she comes from the Grooms line which were of PeeDee Indian descent. I have yet to find info on John "Jack" Gainey's parents but I am digging. If anyone has any info on his parents Duetes and Matilda Gainey I would greatly appreciate it.
