Noticed the name your looking for. For past 95 years my maternal grandparents last name was spelled GAIER yet my aunt found some of their original boarding papers. The surname spelling was GAJER from Port of Hamberg in 1897. They were last from Jaroslaw, Galicia, Austria Greatgrandfather's 1st language was German while wife's was Polish I didn't discover name change till after misspelling name and didn't notice I had used ( j ) instead of ( i ) at that point, So when re-researching Ellis Island archives after 2 years of searching them off and on. Since then in genealogy section of Worcester, Massachusetts public library I have found that the same family's name has also been spelled GEYER, GUYER,GAYER, GEIR, GAIER, & GAJER. To my surprize also I found a second family in Worcester with almost all same first names living several streets apart. Yet belong to same Catholic Church. My GreatGrandfather was Gustav Gajer married to Kataziana Purha.

You are so right! I have come across all the spellings you mentioned except GAJER. In searching church records, it depended on whether the priest recording them was using Latin or German and then there would still be differences in the spelling.
