You did not answer, what was language of this ancestor? What did he considered himself to be?

From what little information I know about Mike Gaidos, he spoke Croatian.

I was thinking that your ancestor was from present Slovak Republic being that in village Bystre I found a GAJDOS^.

Do you have his church marriage record or state marriage application as those 2 records should have parents names.
Check in LDS-Mormons for church records.

In Croatia's phone book:
GAJDOŠ and LUKAČIN. Both of these surnames show up in Slovak Republic's phone book as well. I am sure Robert Jerin will assist you on Croatia's board.
