MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Hazel C. Gaidies, 86, of Muscatine died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Riverbend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Muscatine.

Services at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Robert Wilson will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist Betty Lincoln. Pallbearers are Bob Ernst, Robert Howard, Glen Anderson, Warren Weber, Mike Ayers and Clark Downey. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Terrill, Edgar West and Vernon LaRue. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Gaidies was born May 26, 1915, the daughter of George and Clara Schmitt Mentink. She married George A. 'Judge' Barton June 15, 1935, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death in 1962. She later married Albert F. Gaidies Dec. 7, 1963, in Aledo, Ill. He preceded her in death July 26, 1997.

She graduated from Muscatine High School.

She worked at Rose's Style Shop for several years until retiring. She was also a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards with friends as well as Solitaire. She loved spending time on the Mississippi River with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Lois Downey and husband Bill of Muscatine; two grandchildren, Susy Rankins and husband Mike of Fruitland and Ed Downey and fiance Sarah Jacobs of Muscatine; two great-grandchildren, Eric Slater and Kierra Leigh Rankins; two stepsisters, Lois Hines of Coralville and Mary Wagner of Muscatine; a cousin, Viola Dickey of Muscatine; and her caregiver, Michelle Miller of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, four sisters, a brother and her stepmother.
