My maiden name was Gai. I am curious about your search for relatives. My fathers name was Henry Philip Gai. He has a sister Rosemary and a brother Philip Henry. He was born in Seattle, Wash. in 1922 and passed away at the age of 60. He was a fabulous man and great father. His father was Giglio Gai and he from Calabria, Italy. He was married to Cecilia Surace. They immigrated to Seattle and had an Italian bakery. I have never known of any other person with the last name of Gai. I would love more information.

Karen, We're probably not related, but my "GAI"
family on Long Island, NY currently has 8 people
with the Gai name. My father, Wilbur came from
Denmark where the Gai name is inscribed on
tombstone that go back about 800 years. In the
fancy script of the day, the GAI sometimes looks
like it could be GAJ. But the records seem to point
to GAI as the correct spelling. By the way, I visited
Giglio's bakery about 20 years ago by accident on a
trip! Is it still in operation?
Thanks and good luck,
Dennis Elliott Gai

Karen,

My great-grandfather's name was Giovanni Domenico "John" Gai and he was born in Mango, Cuneo, Italy. His parents were Giacomo Nicomede Gai and Angela Massetti, who were married in Montaldo Scarampi, Alessandria, Italy. The family resided in Montaldo Scarampi both before and sometime after my great-grandfather's birth, and were still there when he immigrated in 1907. He married in 1907 in Vigliano d'Asti, Alessandria, Italy just before immigrating. His wife's name was Amalia Maria Rosa Macagno. They resided in Pittsfield Massachusetts until their deaths. My great-grandfather John Gai had a sister Albina Maria who married Mario Ricalzone in Pittsfield. He also had other brothers and sisters and cousins, some who moved to California.

I do not know if we are related or not. My microfilm searches in Alessandria Italy show thousands of people with the Gai or Gaj last name. I have found that Gai and Gaj are identical names, depending on who entered the record.

Keep in touch.

I just read your messge and my grandfather, Joseph Gai, was born in Asti in 1901. He came to the US with his sister Louise when he was 16. My aunt Theresa still lives in Asti. Do you think we are related?

My mother's maiden name is Gai and her family (both mother and father) are from Asti. I still have an aunt there. Do you have family there also?

I also responded to your other message about family in Asti Italy, but just read this one. I live in Pittsfield and am related to all the Gai's here. I remember my mother talking about Amalia and John. I know they were all close when she was growing up. When my grandfather first came here from Italy he went to San Francisco where he had relatives. Anyway I can talk to my mother and get more detailed info about more specific information regarding Amalia and John. Is there anything I can ask her for you?

Hi Wendy. Yes Amalia and John are my great-grandparents. Amalia was born in Vigliano d'Asti and John (Giovanni) was born in Mango (province of Cuneo), but his parents did not live in Mango. They lived in Alba.

My email address is jdean1@airmail.net. You can correspond to me directly there. I know there are relatives in California but haven't figured out yet how they all relate.
Supposedly there are relatives in Australia too.

Who are your parents? I don't see you listed under Secundus or Joseph, but maybe I just didn't know about you.

Wendy,

Don't know if I have any living relatives in Italy or not. I am hoping to find them. I know that Amalia Macagno had a brother who was living in Italy during WWII. No one really kept in contact after my great-grandparents died.
