Does anyone have any information on a Lawrence Gahagan Sr, born around 1759? He may have been born in Bracklin or Tyrrellspass Co. Westmeath. He and his wife Sarah (Pringle) lived in Dublin before they came to the States around 1800/01.
The family tradition is that he was involved in dangerous political activity, and had to leave the country to escape imprisonment or hanging.
Lawrence and Sarah had 10 children - all but their last child was born in Ireland - probably Ballyboy. Lawrence died of a lung malady in 1802, leaving Sarah to raise the children on her own. Any information would be great! Thanks, Rae

I'm a descendant of Lawrence Gahagan Jr. and have a stack of information on the Gahagan family.

You will be interested to know you have told me something I hadn't heard. "Lawrence died of a lung malady."

Surnames: Gahagan/geoghegan/ Noon
I have been attempting to track down a Capt Gahagan who was married to Harriet Noon who was possibly born in Weedon, and served in India . he was said to have been attracted to the Ovens district , Victoria Australia by gold and died there, but I have been unable to trace him.
I was attracted to your posting because I have seen your alternative posting also - and wondered if it was perhaps a misunderstanding, or that his first name was George!

Do you have any ideas about the alternative spelling???

Regards Pamela Watterson.

My family is also trying to locate Lawrence Gahagan because they have a portrait painted by him they believe to be an original. He painted it using egg tempera which was a technique dating back to the Egyptians and had a resurgence in the 18th century.

The only information I have found is that he was a sculptor and sculpted a marble bust of Mary Anne Clarke, the mistress of the Duke of York. The relationship resulted in a scandel because she was accused of selling armaments to the French (I believe it was the French).

It appears he only painted 1 portrait and this very well may be the one my parents own. We are trying to locate as much information about him as we think this portrait may be very valuable (we hope). Especially since he created a bust of the mistress of the Duke of York which was scandalous.

That's all I know.

I too am trying to find information about Lawrence Gahagan. My parents have a portrait they believe to have been painted by him. The only information we have been able to find out is that he was a sculptor/painter.

He sculpted a bust of Mary Anne Clarke who was the mistress of the Duke of York. The relationship was scandelous because she was accussed of selling armaments to the French (I think the French).

Could you verify if indeed he was a sculptor/painter and if so, is his work valuable? It appears he only painted one portrait and that would have to be the one my parents own.

Thank you

I know its a long time since you posted your message, but I though I would try sending a reply any way as I just fround your message on the net. Lawrence Gahagan was my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather. A large number of the family were sculptors during the 18th and 19th century. A few of them also have paintings recorded. I would be most interested in the painting owned by your family as I have yet to see a Gahagan painting, only sculptures.
Hope you receive this message.
Many thanks,
Joy
