I am researching the Gaffey family from Galway, Ireland. My information shows that Patrick Gaffey was born somewhere between 1822-1830 possible Kilbegnet Parish, Galway Ireland. Patrick died 02 Jan 1892 and is buried in Holbrook Iowa. I think his parents are Michael Gaffey and Brigid Kean. I think his siblings were Lawrence, John, Martin, James, Mary & John. Patrick married Ann Marie Kelley in New Jersey in 1851. I would love any further information anyone can share with me about this family. Thanks! BMA

Do you have marriage and or death certs for Patrick that show his parents names ? just wondering, since you dont sound certain about his parents names....
Unfortunately RC baptism and marriage records for Kilbegnet/Glinsk parish only go back to 1836, so not far enough to show a baptism of your Patrick.
Were any of Patrick's siblings born in the same area anytime after 1836 ?

Hi Shane, Thank you for your reply. I have searched member trees to find the information so I cannot verify anything except that Patrick was married to Ann Kelley (I have been to the grave in Holbrook Iowa and my dad remembers this information). The information I have found in member trees is that Patrick had a brother James born in 1837. Where should I search for James birth certificate? Any other advice on how I should proceed with my search? Thank you for the assistance.

I wouldn't rely on just members trees - a) because these are not always accurate and b) because not all families are represented in these.
It's best to start with details you know for certain - and work back step by step, with your own documentation.
I wouldn't spend time searching for details of this James until you have established some sort of connection to your family - no point spending time and money following a family that may not even be related to your Gaffneys...
Maybe the place to start would be with Patrick's death and marriage certs... especially as you know his date of death & burial place. Presumably you have some details of the children of Patrick and Ann - so might be able to work out an approximate date for the marriage. Certs usually mention important clues, such as parents names..and maybe place of birth.

Re: Gaffey in Galway/Roscommon
I have done some more homework and have confirmed that James and Patrick are brothers(as well as Lawrence, John, Martin, and Thomas. I have seen a copy of a letter from the parish priest of Kilbegnet, Roscommon stating that James was baptised at Kilbegnet parish 13 July 1837 and is the son of Michael Gaffey and Bridget Kean. Do you have any advice on how I might proceed researching this family? Thanks, Bernadette

Re: Gaffey in Galway/Roscommon
Hello Bernadette,
I'm sorry to say that I do not have any advice as to how you might proceed with your research. But, I can say that I have traced my own family to Michael Gaffey and Bridget Kean as well. My details are extremely sparse, and like you, I relied mostly on member trees until I hit a dead end with Michael and Bridget about two years ago. Anyway, like I said, I cannot give you any advice and it is likely that you have more information than I do. I hope you find what you're looking for and if you do, I'd love to hear it! Thanks and good luck!

Re: Gaffey in Galway/Roscommon
Hi Ryan,
Any new information on Michael Gaffey & Bridget Kean? I have found 2 Birthdates for Michael 1801 & 1803/1804 each record has a different set of parents, so I no longer am sure which Michael would be the right one. Just wanted to touch base with you and see if you had found any new leads.

Re: Gaffey in Galway/Roscommon
Hi Ryan,
I just came across new records to help with the Gaffey family. Search the internet for "Glinsk parish records 1836-1851". It shows that Michael Gaffey & Bridget Kean had 2 daughters named Marion. One in 1839 & the second in 1841. I didn't find records for their children John, Laurence & Thomas, which I find confusing. The record for their son Patrick is also confusing, it shows he was baptised in 1843. Although his birthdate is unknown I'm sure it must be closer to 1820-1830. Anyway I thought you would enjoy looking thru these records. Bernadette
