The Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs was an inpatient psychiatric hospital until deinstitutionalization took place in the late 70's. Now it still operates, but typically as a short term institution. The area where your relative is buried would most likely be one of the cemetaries on the campus as many people who were admitted to the hospital lived there until they passed away. I hope this information is helpful to you. If you Google search for history on the hospital there is a website that you can apply to in order to get records of patients from this time period and their admit and discharge information.

AT THE SAME TIME BEING A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL, MONTANA STATE HOSPITAL IN WARM SPRINGS WAS, ALSO AN INFIRMARY, THEN LATER A TUBERCULOSIS SANITARIUM. ONE OF MY UNCLES, RIKTOR ALBERT BAKKEN, BORN IN 1910, DIED THERE IN DECEMBER OF 1918 FROM THE PANDEMIC INFLUENZA. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO LOCATE WHERE HE IS BURIED. WE THINK ON THE PROPERTY OR POSSIBLY IN ANACONDA. YOU MIGHT RESEARCH "GUIDE TO THE WARM SPRINGS STATE HOSPITAL RECORDS 1877-1973" ON GOOGLE FOR INFORMATION. BEST OF LUCK!

THE TERM "INST." REFERS TO "INSTITUTION". C.G.N., I AM NOT CERTAIN. IT COULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE DEATH CERTIFICATE, CAUSE OF DEATH, ETC. I BELIEVE THE NUMBERS REFER TO CEMETERY PLOT LOCATION, ROW 67, LOT 39, WHICH MIGHT BE LOCATED ON THE MONTANA STATE HOSPITAL PROPERTY, WHICH ORIGINALLY ENCOMPASSED ALMOST 1700 ACRES.

Warm Springs, Montana is a very small village outside of Anaconda. The Montana State Hospital is still there, although I think it was a children's hospital in 1950s. (Inst.)
Close cemeteries would be Butte and Anaconda.
Could ask my niece who still lives in Anaconda if you have still not located it.

Thank you for your reply. We were able to get in touch with a historian who knows the hospital and it's grounds really well. The child we were looking for is buried in one of the 2 cemeteries there. We also was able to get a brief copy of why she was hospitalized there and why she died. It is a very sad story.

Both my Grandparents worked in Warm Springs-My Grandmother was an activities assistant and my Grandfather was the plumber for the institution. Both my parents worked there as well-the time span is a guess-probably 1950's onto 1969. My Grandparents also lived on the grounds of the hospital. As a child, my parents would drive us over every summer from Washington state to stay with them in Warm Springs. I have fantastic memories of riding my bike all over the town, visiting with the residents (who were safe and trustworthy) I was told by my Grandmother not to go too far down the dirt road in her backyard. She said there were ghosts. (she was a colorful storyteller..she was Indian)I never went down that dirt road until many years later I went a few summers ago with my friend. We were on our bikes and even though I was a little scared, I took the dirt road. It lead us to a very serene little graveyard, with a white picket fence, some stones faded, but still have plastic flowers. Many were children and it broke my heart. My father said that a lot of the children and infants buried there were his residents he cared for. Most had a condition called Hydrocephalus. Back then they didnt know how to treat these children, so all they could do was try and keep them comfortable. Every Summer I go back to Warm Springs and most of my memories there as a child are full of great times, the smell of the Cottonwood trees in the heat, the creek that runs through my Grandma's old home (she and Grandpa are gone.)And I always stop to pay my respect to the children and all who are buried there.
