Hello to all Gaddes researchers.
My grandmother was MARIA GADDES born in Lancashire, England in 1874. Her parents were JOHN EDWARD GADDES and MARGARET ELLIOT. John was born in 1858 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England, and Margaret was born in Hayton, near Carlisle area, Cumberland, in 1860.
John's father JAMES GADDES was born in Scotland around 1826.
But this is where it gets tricky. !!
On census forms they spelled their surname not only GADDES, but GEDDES and GADDOSS, so spelling played its part in the problem of finding these ancestors.
Another twist is that John Gaddes married five times with one wife born in Lancashire (Margaret Elliot), two in Cumberland, one in Ireland (Agnes McGuiness), and one in Northumberland.
If anyone sees a connection, please contact me and we can perhaps unravel this tangle.

Dear Margaret,

I think my pressing question arising from your wonderful message is - Did any of James Gaddes' many children migrate to Australia? We have James Gaddes further along in our line- maybe there is a connection. I would be thrilled to piece my paternal line of the family together- they have always been somewhat elusive, mysterious and ephemeral.

Best wishes,
Michelle Gaddes

Hi Michelle
the honest answer is that I don't yet know, I'm still trying to work out the wives of John, son of James. It is possible of course and if I find a link, I will let you know. Don't know if I mentioned that James was born in Scotland around 1825?

Hi There,

My family name is also Gaddes and I know that some of my Grandfather's family emigrated to Canada. I don't know anything else I'm afraid but my Aunt probably will (her father was my grandfather Robert Gaddes). The Gaddes' I know of originated from the North of England, I believe - some are still there around Newcastle and surrounding areas - namely my Aunts (2 of them) and I believe also Robert Gaddes' sister.

I live in London and my Father (also Robert Gaddes) moved down here from Sunderland, nr Newcastle in the 70's.

Maybe we're related?!

I believe that Gaddes may be a connection in the mystery of my great grandmother. She was born in No. Ireland but raised in England by Catholic nuns, later immigrating to the USA. My DNA testing shows a connection to NSW. I think my Irish ancestors left during the famine. Do you know if you have any Morgan, Mangan, McKinney or Sullivan family members? We are probably some sort of cousins! I live in California.
