Was Gadd her maiden name? Was she a slave or not?

Also, The Gadd Genealogy 1939 should only be used as a possible lead and not gospel truth. Joseph stopped with the females.

Just to add to the previous reply... Joseph Hayden Gadd's book is a wonderful starting point. BUT it is imparative that you do you own research as there are so many more resoources available to us now that have shown his conclusions are not always correct. Primary example is my Gadd line which is his final chapter - he has made several errors which have been duplicated and reproduced over and over again thus perpetuating bad information.

Exactly!

Someone has Thomas Gadd who died in Rockcastle County, Ky married to someone named Amy. This has yet to be proven who his wife was! Apparently this has been confused with a Thomas Gadd who also served in the Revolution from IN or IL WHO DID marry someone who was named Amy - but he died in 1848 (I believe) while my Thomas died in 1934!

Surnames: Gadd, Rhodes, Ewing, Pankey, Brown, Sasser
I'm curious about this Miriam Gadd, too. I have found several things that associate her with the Chism's.
I found a listing for a Myram Gadd in Montgomery, North Carolina in the 1830 census.

When she died she had this in her will (March 4, 1853)
To John Sasser and wife Mary Ann, a Negro woman Chloe. If annually her labor exceeds her expenses they shall divide the surplus between themselves and Peggy Brown and Rachel Roads. John and Mary Ann Sasser executors. Witnesses: James Pankey, R R Howell, William J Brown, Anson Brown.

I also found a letter written in 1848 by a James Pankey (witness to her will) to a John Ewing. He refers to Miriam Gadd as Ewing's mother-in-law. He mentions Chloe and how fond Miriam is of Chloe and how smart Chloe is. He mentions Felix Rhodes and Rachel (it makes it sound like Rachel is Miriam's daughter and John Ewing's sister in law. He also mentions Elijah Brown who married Margaret (Peggy). He also mentions a William Chisholm who is in Panola County, Mississippi. So I think that she had at least 3 daughters (Rhodes, Brown and Ewing - possibly Mary Ann Sasser, too?). It would seem likely that James Pankey was also related to her but I don't know how.
I can find some of these people in other censuses - I think (John) Felix Rhodes and Rachel eventually moved to Texas with one of their sons. I'm not sure about the rest of them, though.
