Gachet - France to UK

I have hit a bit of a wall with my research, and thought I'd post on here on the offchance that anyone knows anything, or has helpful tips about research in France. If this helps anyone else's research along the way, great.

I am researching Louis Gachet (full name possibly Jean Louis Gachet), born approx 1808 in France. He moved to London probably in the late 1830s, and married Clarissa Scotford in 1840. He was a silk manufacturer. His marriage record tells me that his father's name was Peter, not that that sounds particularly French.

As for his place of birth, the only census record that doesn't simply say 'France' hasn't helped me so far. It has been transcribed as 'Vaveye Ty' (doesn't exist)...Unfortunately, not only is the handwriting antiquated and sloppy, it is also an Englishman's approximation of French that he heard. I have guessed at Vevey, though that is in Switzerland, and also at Thyez - though that doesn't answer the 'Vaveye' part.

Thanks to the new Alien Arrivals database, I have discovered a very likely Louis Gachet whose origin is 'Savoy'. I would like to narrow this down.

Additionally, family lore tells of the Gachet family as being silk manufacturers from Lyon. Although not the most reliable information, research tells me that Lyon was famous for silk manufacturing, though I'm not sure it quite qualified as part of Savoy. Either way, it definitely seems I'm looking at the Rhône-Alpes region.

There may be Swiss, perhaps even Italian, links to be found at some point!

If anyone can make any sense of this barrage of information and has any useful information, please let me know!

P.S. My apologies if the breaks between the sections don't show - it didn't like me using html.

I have in my possession several military medals he got during WWI.
on the edge is written 292451 A GachetCH.STOR.N.
On an other "Augustus Gachet stoker P.O. HMS Tyne which would indicate he was in the Navy.
My grandmother's maiden name was PARKER Winnifred, born in 1899.
Hope to hear of you, maybe with more news,
