MY GRANDFATHER'S NAME WAS GODFREY GACH. HE CAME TO AMERICA FROM GERMANY AND I AM NOT SURE WHEN. HE USED TO LEAVE FOR MONTHS AT A TIME WHEN MY FATHER WAS A CHILD AND NO ONE KNEW WHERE HE WENT. I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF MAYBE HE HAD ANOTHER FAMILY OTHER THAN MY GRANDMA AND MY DAD. HE LIVED WITH THEM IN BELLEVUE,NE. HIS MOTHER LIVED IN THE BUFFALO, NY AREA. ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.

Dee,
I'm working on the Gach family for a friend and her grandfather was Godfrey, b 1906, married to Mary Leona Sterr.
They are all from Bellevue, NE and/or Pacific Junction, IA.
I don't have much, but maybe we can share info.
Jude

I am betting it is my sister that you are working on it for. My given name is Diane Emily Gach. I am now married to Steven Owen. I have a child from my first marriage, Alexis Anne McQueen, who is 8 years old. I also have a son with Steve. His name is Brody John Owen and he is 2 years old. Godfrey was also my grandfather and Mary my grandmother. Thanks so much for replying! I read a bit of history that my sister had on Christmas. Very interesting!

I wondered as soon as I sent the reply if you could be the Dee that is Sheila's sister.
Yup, it's me. Was just checking the boards to see what was there.
If you have family tree software, I can give you a copy of all I've got.
My email at home is quiltlady3@cox.net.

Mrs. Owen:

I have tried to e-mail you directly about this thread which you started on 19 May 2001, but it was returned as undeliverable so I am posting my reply here in the hope that you, or a member of your family, will see it. Last year I announced on that board that I hoped that other male Gachs would join me in a study of Y-chromosome DNA, which as you may know only males carry, but my message did not draw any participants.

Y-DNA allows us to bridge the gaps between the various Gach families which were spread out across Europe for whom we have no documents, and especially for those in the USA who do not know their European origins. A week ago I decided that I was tired of waiting on other Gach males to come forward so I started the Gach yDNA Surname Project myself at www.worldfamilies.net. You can see it by following this link: www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/g/gach/ .

I have posted my yDNA test results on the "Results" page and what little I know of my Gach line on the "Patriarchs" page. My documented line starts with my great-grandfather Antoni Gach who was born before 1862 at Korchow in what is now southeast Poland. I believe that his father's name was Jan Gach but the parish records are not available for the years before 1862.

Above my line on that page you will see a Gach family from Pisek in old Bohemia (one of whose members has submitted a sample) and above that you will see the line of the Gach family from Neumarkt in old Galicia (now Nowy Targ, Poland) (one of whose members has also submitted a sample).

As only males carry the Y-chromosome it makes a great way to trace the degree of relationship between families who bear the same surname but have no documented proof that they are indeed related. Given that only males carry yDNA only males can be tested for it, I hope that of every Gach family with whom I am in contact will have at least one representative in this study.

I would be glad to post your line to that page, perhaps others would see it and make a connection to your family. In any case I hope that you will have any male Gachs, whom you may know, contact me about this subject.

Thank you,

Terrance

Hi,

My name is Zoltan Gach. I am from Hungary.
I am intrested in history of our family.
As I know all my roots from 1800 from HUngary, but have heard, the history of Gach family started from Balkans.

Sir:

If you send me whatever you know of your Gach direct male line ancestry I shall be glad to post it on the "Patriarchs" page of the Gach Surname yDNA Project in the hope that someone will recognize a connection to their own Gach line. And please consider joining the study by submitting a yDNA sample for 25 or 37 or 67 marker haplotype testing. The first results would show your haplogroup (your deep ancestry), which if it is from the Balkans may be Haplogroup Eb31 like some of our Bohemian Gach members. If it turns out to be Haplogroup R1a1 like mine and another Polish Gach then your ancestors lived somewhat further east out on the steppes.

I hope that you can join us and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Terrance
