My father passed away in 1996. His parents were Seigfred and Louise. He had sisters-Louise, Lucille, Marge, and Johanna. One brother, Fred who was killed in WW#2. I am searching for any branches of the family that might exist. My father was born in Ohio in 1925. The family relocated to NY sometime after

I am a branch. My great great grandmother was Maria Gach of Buffalo NY. Who from my knowledge was Siegfrieds sister.

Mark (& Shelley):

I would like to help you both make connections to your Gachs. Last year I announced on that board that I hoped that other male Gachs would join me in a study of Y-chromosome DNA, which as you may know only males carry, but my message did not draw any participants.

Y-DNA allows us to bridge the gaps between the various Gach families which were spread out across Central Europe and for whom we have no documents. A week ago I decided that I was tired of waiting on other Gach males to come forward so I started the Gach yDNA Surname Project myself at www.worldfamilies.net. You can see it by following this link: www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/g/gach/ .

I have posted my yDNA test results on the "Results" page and what little I know of my Gach line on the "Patriarchs" page. My documented line starts with my great-grandfather Antoni Gach who was born before 1862 at Korchow in what is now southeast Poland. I believe that his father's name was Jan Gach but the parish records are not available for the years before 1862.

Above my line on that page you will see a Gach family from Pisek in old Bohemia (one of whose members has submitted a sample) and above that you will see the line of the Gach family from Neumarkt in old Galicia (now Nowy Targ, Poland) (one of whose members has also submitted a sample).

As only males carry the Y-chromosome it makes a great way to trace the degree of relationship between families who bear the same surname but have no documented proof that they are indeed related. Given that only males carry yDNA only males can be tested for it, I hope that of every Gach family with whom I am in contact will have at least one representative in this study.

If you would like me to post your Gach line on the "Patriarchs" page I will be glad to do so, with any luck someone may see it and make a connection to your family. In any case please ask any Gach males whom you may know to contact me about this subject.

Thank you,

Terrance

I am Seigfrieds great Grandson, my grandmother , Margaret was his daughter. I knew Frank very well, and will always have a void in my life from his passing. I cherish the stories of ww2 he shared with me during my adolescence. What a man of class! I had the privilege of finding VHF Seidfrieds home town in Moss, Germany. The Southern part of Baden Wurtenburg beside Bodensee , lake Konstance. I'm suspicious that GGF Seidfried was of Gypsy decent. Romani , not sure.

That is very interesting what makes you think they were gypsy's? Maries son my GGF could fit the gypsy bill.

Marie? are you referring to my grandmothers mother. Louisa, aka Grandma Gach to my Mother, whom had severe diabeties.
If thats true than we are odviously cousins.
About Gypsies; Grandma Gach was definately not gypsy, she was from prussia, northern Germany and her maiden name was Schmidt, but not the schmidts that my great Aunt Louise Married, Her oldest Daughter.
Grandpa Seidfried Gach whom i remember and did vaguely know before he died in 1985(mean old bugger!)was from so far south he was nearly on the switzerland, Germany Border, was very Dark skinned, bohemian in appearance. My Grandma Marge always said we were descendants from Huns and gypsys. It fits the description except for a few details. 1. Grandpa Gach' mother sold thier Farm for him to Immigrate to the USA in 1909, he was 17. Romani didnt typically own land nor were that settled, but who knows. Romani were very prevalent in that area at that time period.
Im still researching that theory, unfortunately Seidfrieds youngest daughter Joanne is the only survivor of grandmas siblings.
Here is the challenge; Im guessing that when my Grandmother was a child that her Father didnt tell much about his heritage, guess i will have to contact Great Aunt JO
