My parents (Joseph Gach, b.1911 and Ann Futterman Gach, b. 1918) both deceased, were born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived their adult lives in Los Angeles, California I would like to know if there are relatives still living in Michigan

Hi Steve,

I think we're related. I'm not a Gach and I don't live in Detroit but I know I'm related to the Futtermans and the Birnbaums. I am now on the trail of how this relationship exists. I THINK it might be through Jacob Futterman or his wife, Anna.

Let's talk.

To Jackye:
Thanks for the note. I do have Birnbaums (on the Futterman side) but I don't know the connection. How is your search going? Good luck. Will you let me know if you find a relationship?

Best regards,

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply. I DO know that you're from the same Futterman family as the one related to me. You must be the grandson of Abraham Futterman. Abraham had a brother named Morris and my mother and aunt said we were "cousins" to Morris and his children, Willie and Fannie. My research has taken me down many paths. I believe that Jacob Futterman's wife, Anna, was a KESSELMAN and that is where the relationship is. I am now looking for information on Anna but can't find anything. Do you know if Jacob Futterman emigrated with his wife, Anna and what port they entered through?

I hope to hear from you soon.

P.S. I believe that Bessie Birnbaum was a FUTTERMAN. Her brothers were Abraham and Morris. She would then be your great aunt, right?

To Jackye Sullins:

Hi Jachye..Good to hear from you. You are some detective.

Abe Futterman was my grandfather. He died the year I was born (1944). Abe was married to my grandmother Esther (Bernstein) and they divorced in the late 1930's I think.

I also barely remember Abe's brother (was it Morris?) I remember my mother had two cousins William and Fay in the Chicago area (Morris's children?).

The aunt Bessie I remember was my grandmother Esther's sister (or so I thought). Her married name was Bessie Newman, married to Morris I believe. they lived in Detroit. And the only Birnbaum name I remember is Max Birnbaum and I don't know the connection to the Futtermans or Gach's but I am sure there is a Birnbaum connection with one or both families of my parents. Seems cousins married each other in those day's. Do you know anything about the Decker family relationship?

I don't know anything about Jacob Futterman or who he was or how a relationship exists. Who were the Kesselmans?

Where do you live and how old are you? If it's ok to ask.Are you a Kesselman? Are you Jewish? It's ok if you're not. My kids don't think I am!!

Inquiring minds want to know!!!

I hope to hear from you. Good Searching.. Best Regards, Steve

Hi Steve,

First, do you mind giving me your e-mail address? This way of communicating is a little cumbersome.

I traced your grandparents in the Detroit census and even have a copy of Abraham's naturalization papers. I didn't knew they divorced. My maiden name was also Bernstein. They were from Lithuania.

Morris WAS Abe's brother and William and Fay are the children my mother remembers seeing as a child when they were living in the Marks Nathan Home. I think their mother died in Russia and their father, Morris married again to an Ida. They had a son named Meyer who I would love to find.

The Bessie you mention is on your grandmother's side and I have no information whatsoever on them. I believe Max Birnbaum was a son of Bessie Futterman Birnbaum and Alex Birnbaum. I do not recognize the Decker name at all.

I think Jacob Futterman was your great grandfather and he died the same year as Abe and is buried at the same cemetery. I would love to know if Jacob's wife Anna emigrated with him in 1923. I think she's my connection to your family.

My mother was a Kesselman and the family all came from the same area north of Kiev (Narodichi, Bazar, Ovruch, Chabne, etc.)

I live in San Diego and I'm 60 years old on the outside but 28 on the inside.) I am Jewish. Where are you and how old are you? I left a message for a Steven Gach in Flint but it must not have been you. I saw there was another on in Missouri.

I found lots of Gach people on the CA birth and death indexes.

I look forward to hearing from you.
