I am from the same John Gabb of Grosmont who married Elizabeth Baker. My gt gt gt gt grandfather was his gt grandson, Baker Gabb of Abergavenny. I imagine you might be descended from James Gabb, Baker's brother. Is this right? Have you a copy of the family tree that my forebear Richard Baker-Gabb included in his book on the family?

Hello

Yes, I have a copy of the family book. I also have traced the family back to Before Christ.

A brief list:
John Gabb - Elizabeth Baker (1630 - 1664)

Henry Gabb of the Goytre

James Gabb Bailey Baker ( - 1806)

James Ashe Gabb Reverend (1782 - 1844)

James Frederick Secretan Gabb Reverend (1810 - 1893)

Frederic Edward Gabb (1840 - 1890) (His brother was James, and yes Frederick did have children which was omitted from the book)

So are you descended from Frederic Edward? Or James William? I have always wondered about this missing information - Richard B-G usually put no issue if there were no children. I understood from another member of the family that Frederic had Alfred, Edward Austin and Alexandrina who married a Slattery and that he was a magistrate and surgeon in Honduras. Is this right? So many of the named relatives on the Baker and Gabb family tree have no issue or died in infancy so one wonders that there is any family left!

Do you have the family tree which goes back to Charlemagne. Once back in the realm of kings, one can go back further much more easily.

Gaye,

I am your cousin Gloria's daughter. Funny, I was just chatting to her last week about you and your plans to meet up with some of the family.

I was in Connecticut last fall and if I had known you were there I would have gotten in touch.

I did find one person that seems to have more information about Beatrice, but have not followed up on much over the summer. I will share what I have.

Hi - I am Sally Gabb from Providence RI USA - I was in Cheltenham last year, and found many many Gabbs in the family history library there. Some research also indicated that the family originated in Wales. I believe my father's father emigrated to the US in the 1800's.

Hi Sally

You are definitely in the right area when you say Cheltenham and all of South Gloucestershire, many Gabbs still in the area.

There is also undeniably a Gabb presence in Wales but whether these are two branches from a common ancestor I cannot say.

Whether Gabb was a name applied to a talkative person or a shortening of Gabriel (or son of Gabriel)or something else entirely is also a mystery. Either way you might think there would be more of us. Our numbers might suggest a single common ancestor since surnames took hold (c. 14th century??). Please note all the above is pure speculation by a total amateur.
