Thank you for your reply i believe that the gabony family originated from Kunstat my great grandfather was an orphan who worked his way across Hungary he then came to the u.k. approx 1880 . He then married a german woman ,in the u.k. they may have spoken yiddish.

You're welcome.

Is the surname GABONY or GABANY? Are you referring to the Kunstat in Czech Republic? Do you have a documentation to confirm that your GABONY ancestor originated from Kunstat?

Not sure how it works in U.K. but in US the state marriage application and church marriage record would show a place of birth and parents names.

Many thanks again my grandparents name was Gabony. I was given Kunstadt as my great grand fathers birth place by a fellow genealogist. I have found mention of it on an a census form.I beleive that Hungary has changed its borders many times throughout history and that this part may now be listed as the czech republic. Johan Ernst Gabony is also listed on a Jewish passenger list entering the U.K. Thank You.

You're welcome.

So Kunstadt, Czech Republic it is for your research.
The Czech Republic [Bohemia, Moravia] was ruled by Austria.
Since your ancestor was Jewish, did you check out

Thank you for your reply i have no evidence at present that Johan had any brothers however i beleive that the Gabony family had emigrated from Hungary prior to the 1860s and after this date . Passenger lists show Gabonys stopping briefly at the U.K. on their journey to the USA.I have always been told that my great grandfather was an orphan..
