Joan,

Now that is a coincidence. I think I will check further to see if I can find my Barbara Gaa's father's name. If I can find the name of her father, do you think you can identify whether he is your Barbara Gaa's brother? The ages are about right for an aunt-niece relationship and famiies did have those kind of naming practices.

Joan & Jean,

I think we may have a match here.

Joan - Your Barbara and my Caroline (sisters) had an older brother named Jacob. Jacob had a daughter Barbara, born in 1889. She appears in his household in 1910 as Barbara O'Connor, a 20-year old widow, along with her daughter Hermes O’Connor.

Jean - Could your Barbara have been married at least once prior to her marriage to John Lurz? It seems possible, given the 6-year age difference between Hermes and her younger brother in the 1920 census. If so, then your Barbara is most likely a niece to our Barbara and Caroline and the eldest daughter of Jacob and Mary (Roth) Gaa. If this fits your info, let me know. I have a good bit of info on Jacob and his family I’d be happy to share with you.

Stacey,
The birth year of Barbara O'Connor, d/o Jacob Gaa, are right for my Barbara (Gaa) Lurz who has a daughter Hermes Lurz. Hermes Lurz's birth year is the same as Hermes O'Connor too. I have Hermes Inez Lurz's death cert. Her name is recorded as Lurz and parents are John Lurz & Barbara Gaa Lurz. Maybe John Lurz adopted her or maybe he is the father just like the certificate says. The obit for Hermes appeard in the Sun on Apr 5, 1942 as "beloved daughter of John E Lurz and the late Barbara Lurz (nee Gaa)" I wonder if anyone has a marriage for Barbara Gaa to an O'Connor?

If I get the death certificate for Barbara (Gaa) Lurz, that should give her parents' names. I think Barbara O'Connor and Barbara Lurz are the same person.

Thank you for offering information about the family, I would like to have it.

If you send an email directly to me instead of the list, please send your address if you want a copy of the obit and death cert for Hermes Lurz. In the meantime I will try to get the death cert and death notice for Barbara (Gaa) Lurz too.

Stacey, I had forgotten about the connection..it has been awhile. I also have forgotten about the translation of the bible pages and since I cannot read German script I cannot give her the info she seeks. I have been busy with the lines in my family tree and not my husbands. Hope we can help her with hers questions. Joan

Hi! I also want to know about my ancestry. My last name is also Gaa and I am from the Philippines.

There are lots of Gaas who originated from the Philippines. . They said that my GGGrandfather has German blood but I am not sure about it as we were colonized by Spain for 300 years from 16th-19th century. It could be that there were intermarriages happened but not sure how they get to Philippine islands.
