Hello Stephen, I am also researching the London Furneaux through Thomas Gorsuch Furneaux born 1792. If you think we are researching the same tree then clearly we too are related. My branch of the family moved with their watch cap manufacture to Coventry which is where I was born. I am struggling to find out about Thomas's father - Samuel I think, but I am confused as to when he was born. Can you shed any light on this please?

Thanks

Deb

Hi. owston confused me on the Census return, until I realised it should be Hoxton, in Shoreditch. George Henry was b 1856 there, the son of Frederick and Mary nee Dosson. I can claim your family as relatives! stephen Park

Obituary: The Rev. Henry Furneaux (1829-1900)

OBITUARY
The Rev. Henry Furneaux

Oxford has sustained a great loss in the lamented death of Rev. Henry Furneaux, M.A., from failure of action of the heart. Mr. Furneaux, who was in his 71st year, was a Winchester boy, where he was noticeable for a remarkably retentive memory. He obtained a scholarship at Corpus Christi College, and a first class in 1851, and became in due course Fellow and tutor of his college, was moderator in 1856, in which year he was ordained, proctor in 1865, and examiner in ''Lit. Hum.'' from 1871 to 1876. In 1868 he accepted the college living of Heyford, near Oxford, which he resigned in 1893, and fixed his residence in Oxford. Mr. Furneaux had for years been making a special study of Tacitus, and the leisure thus acquired enabled him to complete editions of the works of that author which at present hold the field, and have earned for Mr. Furneaux recognition as a principal authority on the "Annals," the "Germania," and the "Agricola."

Mr. Furneaux was of a well-known Devonshire family. His ancestor Admiral Furneaux, and the family name is borne at this day by a group of islands in the South Pacific discovered by him. But, though of Devonshire extraction, he was born at St. Germans, in Cornwall, of which place his father was vicar for a period of nearly 50 years, and it would be difficult for his friends to dissociate his memory from that county. He had a repertory of stories of Cornish life and manners, which he professed to have acquired from the famous Mr. Hicks, of Bodmin, and his unfailing good humour and remarkable memory were at the constant service of his friends for their repetition, and the scholarly historian was for the time lost sight of in the humorous storyteller.. His cheerful, kindly company, his sound scholarship, his unostentatious but profoundly appreciated virtues, will be for long sorely missed in the life of the University. Mr Furneaux married in 1870, Eleanor, daughter of Mr. Joseph Severn, the friend of Keats, by who he leaves two sons and three daughters.

Source: Obituaries ''The Times'', Monday, Jan 08, 1900; pg. 4; Issue 36033; col G — The Rev. Henry Furneaux

I am trying to find out why Percy Furneaux DAWSON (b May 25, 1877 in Edinburgh) ended up with FURNEAUX in his name. His brother is Alexander Bashall DAWSON (b October 19, 1869) named Bashall after the surname of an uncle. So is there a KELLIE-FURNEAUX connection perhaps?

Hello James,
I think we have been in contact before about Dawson family history.

I suspect that the Furneaux part comes from a relative of Helen Kellie (your great grandmother). I have discovered that the Bashall (in Alexander Bashall Dawson) comes from Humphrey Miller Bashall who married Eweretta Kellie (Helen Kellie's) sister. So I wonder if another is one of the Kellie sisters married a Furneaux? Another possibility is that it is the maiden name of one of her grandmothers?

As to Irish origin, I don't know. There are a number of Furneauxs in Cornwall, but maybe these came from Ireland?

Good to hear from you again.

Hello James

I have finally worked out where the Furneaux comes from! Helen Kellie's grandmonther's maiden name was Furneaux and she came from Buckfast in Devon. No Irish connection as yet.

Regards

Russ

1. Any suggestions as to how or why a family in Canada might have selected Furneaux Dawson to reperesent them?

No obvious reason. There are a couple of connections between the Dawsons and Canada, although I suspect that this could be achieved for most families! Is there any connection between your Quinns and John Douglas Gillon (1864-1931) who lived around Fort Frances?

2. Is there any chance that Mr. Dawson's 1903 legal correspondence has survived? This is likely to either be in the Scottish Archives or still with the practice. I have PFDs entry from the 'Writers to the Signet' [From The Resister of Society Writers to the Signet, 1983]
Dawson, Percy Furneaux [13 July 1903] Apprentice to James H. Jameson and James Young - Son of Adam Dawson, Merchant, Leith. Born 25 May 1877, married 1 March 1905, Christian Margaret (Daisy) (died 26 Dec 1963), elder daughter of Robert Menzies of View Field, Lanarkshire, S.S.C., Edinburgh.
Ethel Maude Furneaux

I've hit a roadblock. I'm trying to find the father of my great grandmother, Ethel Maud (or Maude) Furneaux. Her mother was Mary Tope, who by the age of 36 had been widowed and remarried someone with the surname Shillabeer (or similar). Ethel was born in 1886, areas such as Buckfastleigh and Totnes are often mentioned.

Re: Percy FURNEAUX Dawson

Furneaux Dawson,

My gg grandfather Patrick Quinn died in Saint John, NB, Canada in May 1903, leaving a "brother Scotland". After many years of research the weight of evidence of suggests that Patrick's brother was an Andrew Quinn, son of John Quinn, of the Parish of Donaghmore, County Donegal, who died, in 1906, in Glasgow. With recent access to the on-line British Newspaper Archives, I have located a newspaper notice published in an Edinburgh newspaper in November 1903, urging the "heirs of Andrew Quinn, son of John Quinn of Killygordon [Parish of Donaghmore], County Donegal, to contact the office of Mr. P. Furneaux Dawson. I suspect that the add was placed by Mr. Dawson at the request of my family in Canada. I have two questions: 1. Any suggestions as to how or why a family in Canada might have selected Furneaux Dawson to reperesent them? 2. Is there any chance that Mr. Dawson's 1903 legal correspondence has survived?

Peter D. Murphy

Percy Furneaux Dawson was my grandfather. He was a solicitor in Edinburgh and died around 1955. His children are now dead but I understand that the Furneaux part may be of Irish origin.

Uncle Alex was Bashall - Dawson and he was married to the famous actress, Marie Nee but I think she went off with someone else. I will ask of older relatives to see if any can help with the Furneaux bit.

James Brown

Elizabeth Furneaux

I have hit a brick wall and would be grateful for any help.
My g g grandmother, Elizabeth Furneaux, married my g g grandfather George Holmes, on 29 March 1829 at St George's Hanover Square, London. He was a livery stable keeper. I can track Elizabeth through the censuses until her death in Marylebone, London, in 1882. She consistently gave her place of birth as Devon and occasionally, Newton, Devon. She gives her age consistently and this would date her birth as being in 1808. There are plenty of women called Elizabeth Furneaux born in Devon, but none that matches her.
Any help, hint or suggestion would be gratefully received.
Best wishes
Rosemary

I am trying to trace the ancestry of my gggrandmother, Elizabeth Furneaux. She consistently gives her place of birth as 1808 Newton Devon. She married George Holmes in London in 1829 and I have a complete record of her since that date, but nothing prior to it.
A witness to the marriage of her son, George, in 1851 was a George White Furneaux. I have found him in the 1861 census as an unmarried traveller in French silks and ribbons. And then nothing.
If anyone can shed any light, I would be most grateful
Rosemary

Hello

The answer to that is no. Michael has lots and lots of documents and wanted to put a book together and asked me for my help. We have met a couple of times and the going was very slow - he has the knowledge and I have the literary skills but it never got off the ground.

There has been a booklet written about the Furneaux's though, I have a copy of that somewhere which I downloaded and also there is the Furneaux website.

Oh, so your great grandmother came from Normandy. I think that the Furneaux's which are written about come from Somerset and Devon (with branches in Yorkshire and other places). The website tentatively takes the line back to William the Conquerer coming over from Normandy but there is a gap. They were an important family in Devon and Somerset, some were sheriffs and they married well and so had good connections.

My ancestor is Sybella de Furneaux and she is my g grandmother x 5 born Buckfastleigh. This line goes back to Sir Thomas de Furneaux, vicar of Ashburton church but it needs a leap of faith to connect it to the Somerset branch. Although Sybella was born in Hapstead House, it has 48 bedrooms.

If you want to e-mail me direct at Alisonday.1@virgin.net I can probably point you in the direction of the booklet I mention. I'd be pleased to know about your g grandmother's ancestors and what you know also.

Going out in the sunshine now.

Alison

Hello Emily. I am trying to help someone with their tree who is descended from London Furneaux's.
Her earliest London connection seems to be one Samuel Furneaux who marries Mary March on the 10/11/1808 at St.Pancras. The subsequent descendants seem to pop up in Cripplegate and Hoxton.
Have you come accross this branch?

Happy New Year!

Jeremy Furneaux.
