Don't you think you've missed a generation here or two between your 1st and 2nd Williams? The last child of William and Appolonia (Rachel) was born in 1687. It is highly unlikely that any of their children would still be having children in 1784. Your William who married Mary Thompson is more likely a grandson, or great grandson, if related at all.
