This story sounds a little familiar with that apparently my grandfather would tell - something about his 'father?' jumping ship in S.Africa rather than continuing on. Unclear whether it was to avoid conscription or something like that.

My grandfather was Donald Roy Fraser. He also talked about our family name being changed from Winchester at some point in the past. Very little is known about him - I've also heard that he and his siblings ended up in an orphanage. We have no idea who his parents were.

Do you have any further information on James Alexander Fraser after arriving in SA that lines up with Donald?
