Information on George Riley Frakes b.1855

Hello, my name is Justin Frakes and I am interested in information on my grandfather's grandfather George Riley Frakes b. 1855 son of George Washington Frakes grandson of George Riley Frakes. My grandfather always told me about gin ridge and he would show me where the old homestead used to be. I was talking to him the other day and I asked him if he knew his grandfather, he told me he had died before he was born and he never even saw a picture of him. He's in his 80s and I'd like to find any stories or any information pertaining to George Riley Frakes b.1855, just to pass on to my grandfather.

Also I've traced back to George Riley Frakes b.1798 in green Forrest, Pennsylvania, Anyone have anything prior to that? Thanks I appreciate it, Justin.

Friggs name to Frakes ... when? how?

I'm just beginning research into this family, so please excuse if I'm asking "dumb" questions. I have Elizabeth FRAKES, b. 1823 in Kentucky, m. Daniel JOHNSON and lived in Vigo County, Indiana. I think her father is John McVey FRAKES. (From Find-a-Grave)

When I started searching, I found not only FRAKES but also FRIGGS. I'm wondering how Friggs became Frakes and when...were there always Friggs and Frakes or were they all Friggs first?

Thanks, Clare BurghRoots@comcast.net

Phyllis Browning-Frakes Family-Rising Sun IN-1940

Phyllis Browning was my fathers half sister, the daughter of Jesse Browning and Hallie Frakes Browning, born in West Virginia in about 1929. Hallie died when Phyllis was a year old in 1930. As of the 1940 census Phyllis is listed as living with her grandparents William and Emma Frakes and her uncle Madison Frakes on Williams St. in Rising Sun. Madisons wife was Lucille, who worked at a box factory. Jess lived in Cincinnati with his older children in 1940. I believe that Jess remained close to the Frakes family. Any information regarding Phyllis would be appreciated. Thank you

Hallie Frakes/Jess Browning-Indiana

I'm looking for info on Hallie Frakes. She was born in Dearborn County Indiana around 1901. Her father was William who lived in Bear Branch Indiana in 1921 when Hallie married Jesse B Browning (my grandfather) in Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana. Her mother was Emma Johnson of Ohio County. Jess and Hallie had 4 children: Raymond, Opal, Wanita and Phyllis (Raymond and Wanita born in Vevay in 1921 and 1925). Hallie died in Boone County WV where Jess worked for Anchor Coal Mines in January of 1930. She is buried in Aurora. Hallie had a brother named Madison who lived with Jess in 1930. We know that at least 2 of Jess and Hallie's children lived with the Frakes family at various points in time.
Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Alexander Frakes was my 3rd great grandmother's brother. I don't know much about him, however. I have no idea when he left Hardin Co, KY but I was under the impression that he was in either Crawford or Harrison, IN before 1812. He was in the War of 1812, Indiana Regiment. He came to Schuyler County, IL, date unknown. I have seen him there. He also lived near Galesburg, IL, date unknown. I was curious about the Elizabeth Daughterty. You know that Daughterty was his mother's maiden name. Where did Elziabeth come from? I have always wondered where that family came from. Good luck. Annie
Re: Julia Ann Frakes (Marshall) (Shipman)

George, I just read your posting of 23 Aug 2009. New theory that will surprise you. Here goes: I hope I can mkes this clear. Julia is a child in Abisha's family. She is also the mother of Maude Shipman who is my mother's mother. Now Julia has a sister Eliza Jane Frakes. I ran across a picture that my mother had of Dyke and Della Ballenger. My husband said the Della looks like my mother Pauline. So I tried tracking down Della. Couldn't find her so went in backwards thru Dyke, Della's husband. Found an article that said that Dyke married Miss Della Grove. Looked up the Grove family in the census of 1880 and Della living with Ancell Grove and Eliza Jane Grove. Found out thru an Abisha PDF file by Jamie Frakes that Eliza Jane married Ancell Grove(s). That means that Della is the daughter of Eliza Jane Frakes, Maude is the daughter of Julia Ann, Julia and Eliza being sisters. Maude and Della are 1st cousins and my mother Pauline and Della are 1st cousins once removed. Therefore the likeness of my mother to Della. Besides,on the back of the picture Della wrote,"To my dear Pauline." I believe I've proven that Julia is in the family of Abisha and Elizabeth Frakes. Let me know what you think. You can email me directly at bdurkee@carolina.rr.com. I'm most anxious to hear from you.
Betsy

Anoher piece of info that I have is from a lady who is assoicted with the Indiana genealogical society. Everyone who finds Julia in the 1860 census with BM Esarey says she was born in "IA" and associated that with Iowa. Not true. IA in the 1860 census stands for Indiana as the postal codes of that period were not in use as we know them. She said "IA" means Indiana. Thought you would like to know that if you already did't.
Betsy

Hi George-
I have a theory also. I believe that Julia's mother, Elizabeth Robinson Frakes who died in 1959 left Abisha with all of the children. Becuase of Elizabeth's death, he farmed the children out to other relatives or friends. Does this coincide with your theory? I'd be interested in hearing your theory.I have Julia born 5-23 1853 from an obit my mother had. So your info is correct.
Betsy

I'm assuming that you are related to RAYMOND FRAKES - of Mineral Wells, TX - that "just found me" - thru our Grandfather, Charles Clinton Knowles (1st marriage to Effie Sedwick). I am a cousin (in law, if you count that) - to him - from Grandpa's 2nd marriage to Martha Viola (Bench) (Davis) Knowles - in Wildwood, MO (which is now part of Fort Leonard Wood). They were "re-located" by the government to Bennett Springs (north of Lebanon, Laclede Co.,), MO. That is where he died & is buried (Lebanon City Cemt) - in Aug. 28, 1941. Can we correspond? jknowles007@yahoo.com JMK

I did have the DNA test done on ancestry.com
I also plan to have it done on familytreendna.com
My paternal Haplogroup is: E1b1b
Evidently my Frakes family were originally Jewish, which surprised me, as I am Jewish on my father's mother's side of the family and always thought of the Frakes as being English, as that is the country my Frakes immigrant came from.
The Freke (Frakes) Family were said to have lived in Denmark before settling in England, which is a known migration path of Jews, but by the time the family's known history is in England, they are involved in the Church of England and involved with the treasury of the royal family. So they had obviously converted in religion at least by the 1500's.

Hello Charles,
My name is Shannon Freak. I married into the family and at our reunion this weekend I was told by my husbands aunt that her great uncle Henry Freak was embarrassed by the name and changed his to Frake he moved away from the Three River Mass area and the family disowned him for "dishonoring the family name" I believe his parents were Nelson and Sarah Gertrude Freak and were first cousins but I may not be correct with the generation as there are alot of Henry Freaks in this family. If you have any information on how I could find out more please let me know. Thanks so much.

Al,

My mother researched this line back in the 1970's. Per census data Alexander and Margaret's first child was probably born about 1816-1820. This was probably when the family was in Crawford Co., IN, where they are thought to have shown up as early as 1814. I'd rec'd looking for the marriage to the 2nd wife Elizabeth there. The reference to the marriage being in Hardin Co., KY comes from Vol. III, Oregon Donation Land Claims, extracted from the Gen. Forum of Portland, p. 100. That secondary reference is probably in error on the point of the location of their wedding. On the other hand, there were Daugherty's near his father's land in Hardin Co., KY so it is possible he traveled back there at some point. I know of no record that proves her maiden name was Daugherty. My mother's research indicates as many as 11 children for Alexander, one with Margaret and 10 others with Elizabeth.

Hope this helps,

Charles Frakes

They were only married 5 years when Hattie filed for divorce. Custody of their son, Nathan Frakes, was given to Jim's mother, Martha. The 1930 census shows Nathan living with his grandmother, father, and uncle. Hattie married George Allison in Dec. 1930; he murdered her, then himself, in October of 1931. Hattie's first husband, George Jagger, died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic, leaving her with 8 children.)

Dear Stephen,

Just check'n in. I saw your post regarding the Jewish lineage of the Frakes. Do you know something new? I believe that it would make sense. The Jews were recruited to early Europe by royalty to establish a system of exchange involving currencies etc. You say that Robert, in 1575, was Auditor of the Treasury of England. Also, his grandson Thomas was apparently a Bar Mitzvah.
Betsy
My Theory is pretty much the same as yours. However he
did get married just 4 months after Elizabeth's death to Delila. He could have determined that he could not take care of that many kids. There were four children not livings with their parents in the 1860 census. a Elisha R Frakes, a Roda H. Frakes, a Julia A. Frakes and a Mary E. Frakes all in Leopold Township. A Patty.laplante@gmail.com listed three of these as children of Abisha. So either she has guessed at this or she has something to back it up. He was in Iowa when he enlisted for the Civil war in 1861 so he didn't have the kids at that time. Another family tree has this Elisha R. as a son of Thomas, a brother of Abisha but I believe this to be a wrong assumption.
No real solutions just speculation
George

I finally got around to looking at the Frakes' bulletin board. I am pretty sure (but not absolutely sure) that there were 2 Hannah Frakes born in Indiana around the same time, perhaps they were even first cousins. "My" Hannah Frakes married a John Reed 24 Feb 1848 in Indiana and then moved to northern Missouri, and were there with their first child by the 1850 census. By 1880, what with this Reed family apparently being missed on the 1860 census, and with John Reed apparently dying by 1870, and then Hannah apparently dying before the 1880 census, and with my grandfather George R. Reed for unknown reasons being almost completely out of touch with his siblings sometime after 1880, the trail got cold. So cold in fact that about the only thing I am sure of is that this Hannah Frakes married a John Reed, and they had a son George R. Whether or not their son George R. is my grandfather is one of the things I am trying to clear up. Thanks for any information anyone might have.

Charles:

I have read several of the books you reference, but have been unable to locate any record of the marriage bet. my 4th great-grandfather Alexander FRAKES (son of Henry FRAKES, Jr. and Hannah DAUGHERTY) and his second wife Elizabeth DAUGHERTY, which reportedly took place 15 Oct 1817, in Hardin Co., Kentucky. Do you have any record of their marriage, and was Elizabeth related to Alexander's mother Hannah?

On a related note, would you please tell me where I can obtain copies of your books?

ALF

Annie:

I know a fair amount about Alexander FRAKES. He is my 4th great-grandfather. He apparently left Hardin Co., Kentucky for the "Indiana Territory" bet. 1812-1814 (his mother Hannah, who had remarried, still resided in Hardin Co. in 1814); he owned property in Harrison Co., Indiana in 1816; resided in Crawford Co., Indiana in 1819, moved to Knox Co., Illinois in 1828, and to Linn Co., Oregon in 1853, where he died. I have no record of him in Schuyler Co., nor of his service in the War of 1812! Would you please forward me your sources for that?

I believe that Alexander had six sisters: Hannah, Cassandra, Eleanor, Ann, Dorcas, and Susanna. Who was your 3rd great-grandmother? I believe that her mother Hannah DAUGHERTY was born bet. 1762-1765 in Ireland, and may have been the daughter of Michael DAUGHERTY and Elizabeth; however, I have no proof of that!

ALF

My 3rd great grandmother was Hannah Frakes who married thomas McKee in Hardin county about 1802.They moved to Harrison Co., IN and thomas was in the War of 1812. He got land in the military tract in Illinois and arrived in Birmingham township, Schuyler Co., IL before Dec 1818. The History of Schuyler Co. says he was the first white man in that area. Hannah's sister, Cassie married William McKee, Thomas' brother. they moved to Crawford Co., IN and later came to Schuyler Co., IL. Ann Frakes married William Peak and moved to Schuyler Co., IL. Alexander came to IL after the War of 1812 and he stopped to visit his sisters in Schuyler Co and then moved to Knox. According to the State Library in Indianapolis, Alexander was in the War of 1812. there's a lot of info on the Frakes family in the Book "the Book of McKee." It's on the internet but they only put in the McKee part. Too bad. You can order a microfilmed copy of the book thru LDS. The copy that was in my library was moved to another library about 50 miles away. Good luck.
Julia Ann Frakes (Marshall) (Shipman)

My ggrandmother was Julia Ann Frakes. My late aunt said Julia was the daughter of Abisha Frakes. I have not been able to prove that. Julia married an Ira B. Marshall, was widowed with one son, and later married James W. Shipman with whom she had 8 children. They moved to Tulsa Oklahoma that was then known as Indian Territory. Julia died there and was laid to rest in Oaklawn Cemetery. Julia's daughter with James W. Shipman, Maude Shipman, was my grandmother. I hope some out there can help me prove Julia is the daughter of Abisha Frakes and Elizabeth Robinson.
