Still looking for the church records to see if any further info is given....I heard back from the church where I thought Helen and Karl were married, based on the priest who signed their marriage certificate, however apparently there is no record of Helen, Karl, or their child Sigrid, plus the priest in question was at another church during that time. So....another letter to another church.

I did manage to get my great aunts birth certificate from her grandson, and it lists her mother as Helen Fortona. So at least I am looking for the right (approximate) surname....it was definitely Fortona/Fortuna, and not Smith or Jones. It lists her birthplace only as Russia....but as I've discovered how "fluid" borders and birthplaces seem to be on these records, that doesn't help me any.
