Last night I attended a Fish Fry at the subject church. I talked to their maintenance man, who said that he had just cleaned up the old cemetery (P073), that's located very near the one that the church uses (P118). I assume this would be the one where Timothy Fortner is planted at.

You can view Soapstone Baptist tombstone inscriptions, history, images and Google Maps by visiting http://www.sciway3.net/scgenweb/pickens-county/cemetery-html....

Your talking about a church/area that's very rich in Black heritage. Several of the senior church members say that its history is slowly being forgotten with the passing of time. Everything should be done to help them preserve it and my Pickens County SCGenWeb Project can help do that.

Hey Paul, It is my understanding that the remains of Timothy Fortner are not buried at Soapstone.I have been told that Timothy's remains are on the Owen property past the Soapstone Church on the right.I visited Mr.Chris Owen back in 1998 when he was 105 I was told. He had taken care of Timothy's burial site for as long as he could remember.I did not got to the site at the time of the visit but hope to return soon and see where he is buried. There was a marker there in 1972.Due to my bad health I don't get to travel much. Thanks for the info. A marker for Timothy Fortner is placed at Pleasant Grove Church on Liberia Rd.

Sorry Paul but I sent the same pix twice. Here is the marker that was on Timothy's grave in 1972. My understanding is that it is no longer there.

Using the Query Board to send me a message is too time consuming. Please use gcgenweb@bellsouth.net.

The above dataline tells me that James Fortner's wife is simply named Lucinda Fortner. Her dataline may or may not be included in the recording. If it's recorded, then James Fortner would probably be listed as her husband.

J. Fortuner could be taken from an old tombstone in the area that was not clearly readable.
