I'm just now getting started on my Fonda line so I was happy to see this post. I'm hoping I'm on the right track. I have Geertie Gillise Fonda as being b. in Albany but I believe that's wrong, so I'm trying to get that straightened out since she emigrated with her family to America.

I've been pouring through the Fonda.org site as well as the Fonda Blog hoping something jars loose and I have everyone where they should be. So many similar names and all ... :)

Star - I administer the Fonda genealogy database and am not related directly. With just "Mrs. E. Small Fonda" I cannot help... there are several E. S. Fonda's both male and female, and no maiden names of Small that I can find. There would need to be a location, date or more name to be able to decipher. Regards, Mark Fonda

thank you for your reply. Are you a relative of hers? The reason I ask is this: I have aquired an old Sea Chest that has the name on a plackerd: Mrs. E. Small Fonda There is some other writting on it that is difficult to decipher. It is very old. I can't figure out if it indeed is Loretta's as I can't find where the "Small" part comes in. I am just in search of perhaps some history on the chest.

Mark, this information comes from my late Uncle John Lafayette Johnston. He did have all the documentation as he visited several countries/churches over a 20 year period..prior to most home computers even being available. He is a member of sons of liberty and several other organizations that required proof of our ancestry. I know in my copy of the relationship list, those 2 people are listed as my 9th great grandparents. It lists several Uncles and Aunts.. Annetjen PIETERSZ bef 1609-?
Douwe Pietersz bef 1619-? Gerrit Pietersz bfe 1612-? I can send you the list of Aunts/Uncles of what I have..with Fonda and see if they match up. I will email this to you as well as post here.

The American Fonda line, descended from Jellis Douw Fonda (1614-1659) who immigrated from Holland in 1651 to the Albany, New York area, can only be traced back to about 1632. Dutch records indicate Jilles Fonda was a journeyman smithy, who hired on to a big earthworks project near Eagum, Holland in 1632-1633 (he would have been 18-19 years old)... he then moved to Amsterdam, got married in 1641 (age 27), started a family (he became an innkeeper and blacksmith)... and then took the voyage to America in 1651 (age 37) with his young family of five. Although tradition holds that the family originated in Italy (either Genoa or Trieste) there is no direct evidence... and in fact, initial DNA results indicate there is no match since the Dutch/American Fonda line is Anglo-Saxon and the Italian Fonda line is Basque. One of my Great-Great-Great-Grandmothers was (I hope I counted that right) Catherine Maria/Mariah Groesbeck Burns. I think I've looked at the same census records you have, trying to figure out who Rebecca's parents might have been in the Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY area in 1820/1830 (based on the statement in the Isabella Co Inquirer obit for Henry Groesbeck about their origins). I'm a stitcher, in addition to being far too buried in genealogy, and am trying to do something called a 'Mother Tree' - which is direct female line only. I'm wistfully hoping someone knows Rebecca's father's name, so I have at least a CHANCE of finding her mother's name.

Sarah Fonda, age 80, (married) of Schuylerville, New York is listed among the dead in a train accident.

The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Train No. 5, The Pacific Express left a snowy Erie, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. As The Pacific Express plowed through the snow and crossed a bridge over the Ashtabula River, about 100 yards from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, the passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. In just seconds, the bridge fractured and the train plunged 70 feet into a watery abyss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Ashtabula Bridge Disaster." The link for the site is listed below.

Thanx for getting back so quickly. I did browse your tree previously but didn't think any matched up with what I've been given. This is the family of my father's sister's husband's sister's husband...his info shows Henry Groesbeck (10/7/1809 (Cambridge, NY) - 1897 (Isabella Co MI)) and Rebecca Fondah (5/3or8/1811 - 6/12/1844 (both Stillwater, Saratoga, NY)) were married 7/21/1830 in Saratoga, NY. Their daughter, Lucy Ann (b 1843 NY), married one Lewis Egleston in 1861 in Clinton Co, MI. Lucy Ann's full siblings were Isaac (abt 1831NY), Charles (abt 1833NY), Mariah (abt 1835NY), Lewis (abt 1837NY) and Mary E (abt 1839NY). Henry's 2nd wife was a Lydia Ingersoll (B abt 1807 NY). In the 1850 census they're located in Aurelius, Ingham Co, MI, wrongly indexed as Grovesbeck. The 1820 Saratoga NY census shows 4 Fonda's with females under age 10, Isaac D, Daniel, Cornelius & John O. Are you familiar with any of them?

I don't have an exact match for a Rebecca Fonda (1811-1844) who married a Henry Groesbeck but there are a few possibilities if some of your data is not quite correct. None of them appear to have been born or lived in Saratoga County.

She may have died in Greenville, Montcalm, Michigan. She was there with her son-in-law and daugher, John and Lucy Conklin? during the 1870 Michigan Census, but not with them in the 1880 Michigan Census in the same place. She may have died between 1870 and 1880. Angelica's husband was Durlin Crego.

I am also looking for Angelica's daughter, Anna Crego-Whitbeck's death and burial information. She must have died after the 1880 Michigan Census, when she was living with her husband, Johnathan Whitbeck, in Beaver, Bay Co., Michigan. Also, where is Johnathan Whitbeck buried? He died in 12/15/1893 in Deerfield, Livingston, Michigan?

He was married to Elaine Jessie Murphy (Date unknown),they had one child, a daughter named Carole Elaine Fonda born on 5/11/42 (my biological mother) she died on November 6th,2005 of Bladder Cancer. I believe that possibly we share ancestry through quite a few lines all early l7th Century New York colonials...ie, Vandenberg (Waldrons married Vandenberg) (had 2 ancestral grandmothers) However these Vandenbergs were living near the Greenbush in the 1630s. Yates...
I'm an llth generation direct decendent of Resolved Waldron whose granddaughter, Rebecca Waldron married John Yates circa 1670 ..they lived at the "Greenbush" I'm an llth generation decendent in the Bradt line...Albert Andriessen Bradt -another New Netherland immigrant -Rennselaerwyck 1636. I also have ancestrial ties to Hitchcock family.
This July there is a large Family Reunion for the Bradt Family in Albany, New York at the Desmond Hotel.

New Earliest Record of Fonda in America

Tradition provides us an immigration date of 1642 for our American family patriarch, Jellis Douw Fonda and his family. However, Amsterdam records http://www.fonda.org/stories.htm#Hester indicate birth dates of 1641, 1643, 1645 and 1647 for their children, in Holland. So we know that 1642 was not correct, unless Douw was traveling back and forth with the Dutch West India Company, for which there is no evidence. . . .

Although we don't have a ship manifest or land grant with a Fonda surname confirming, there is a good likelihood http://www.fonda.org/stories.htm#Voyage that Jellis arrived on the "Valckenier" in June 1650 at New Amsterdam. . . .

This corresponds to the end of The Eighty Years' War (1566–1648) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighty_Years%27_War, or 'Dutch Revolt of the Seventeen Provinces' in the Netherlands against the Spanish (Habsburg) empire. The end of the fighting could have provided for safe passage and increasing commerce with the New World. . . .

The first tangible record of Jellis (Gillis) in America was established as that found in Fort Orange on October 19, 1651 when he received permission from the court to distill liquor in Greenbush, a small village near Albany. However... a new record has been found in the book "Early Irish in Old Albany" http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=BookList&dbid... which places him there a couple of months earlier. Not a big difference, but nonetheless, this is now the earliest tangible record of a Fonda in the New World: . . .

Early Irish in Old Albany, N.Y.: with special mention of Jan Andriessen, "De Iersman Van Dublingh", Danaher, Franklin M., Boston, MA, American-Irish Historical Society, 1903, p. 17: ...the court records show that on August 18, 1651, "Thomas Konnig abused the court as an unlawful court, taking materials from the sayings of Dyckman, who sang the 82nd Psalm and called the high council rogues and tale bearers in presence of Evert Pels, Art Jacobse and Gillis Fonda." . . .

Evert Pels was also listed in the October 19 court record as the owner of the house where Gillis would produce liquor. It is odd that the men were in court, merely observing, two months prior to their court date. Perhaps they were preparing for their upcoming petition. They apparently got more than an earful from this ruckus Irishman. . . .

Jellis had been an innkeeper and blacksmith in Amsterdam. Brandy was a product of high value in New Amsterdam. The skills and knowledge needed may have been similar. Although none of the early Fonda's were known as anything but pious in nature, the making of spirits was a worthwhile commercial venture in the fur trading environs of early Albany. . . .

After 6 years of my own searching - I am getting close to finding some answers. Other members of my family have been researching our ancestors for over half a century. I recently found "I. Fondy" listed in the 1840 Census in the city of St. Louis.

We had suspected that our family was somehow tied in to the FONDA family of New York, but when we saw that Vrooman FONDY was from Schoharie County, New York in some National Archives pension documents, we were a bit more certain. I decided to start looking at FONDAs and FONDEYs from the Albany and Mohawk valley area - but there were so many FONDAs, I did not have much success. I even traveled cross-country to try to find some clues - but came up almost empty. There was an offshoot of the FONDA family who spelled their names FONDEY. I began looking at John Fondey, Junior and his family - but also came up empty. He had two brothers - but various publications led me to believe that their descendants were not directly related to my line.

The 2005 inclusion of the Early American Newspapers online database as part of my membership with the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society was the breakthrough I needed! An obituary in the NewYork Evening Post, dated 28 Nov. 1806 gave a date of death of November 19th for Douw I. Fondey.

After researching the Fonda and Fondey familes for decades, searching libraries in 30 states, and scouring the internet, we never had found a death date of 1806 for Douw FONDEY or any Douw FONDA. This new information was just one tidbit which would lead to many other revelations. I was able to deduce that Douw I. FONDEY was from Saratoga County, he served as an Ensign in the Revolutionary War, was an Associate Justice of the Peace and Sheriff of Saratoga County, and at one time was Collector of the Revenue. His office was at his home at Ballston in 1798. He served in the New York State Assembly in 1797 and 1798. He may have been referred to at times as Douw J. FONDEY or Douw I. FONDA. Further research revealed that he was an Adjutant to Alexander HAMILTON, and was probably at the battle of Yorktown.

My findings have been published in the Summer 2006 edition of "The New York Researcher." I would especially like to contact any members of the Winne family or Epenetus WHITE family or David FONDA family who may have any info on the FONDEYS.
