The American Fonda line, descended from Jellis Douw Fonda (1614-1659) who immigrated from Holland in 1651 to the Albany, New York area, can only be traced back to about 1632. Dutch records indicate Jilles Fonda was a journeyman smithy, who hired on to a big earthworks project near Eagum, Holland in 1632-1633 (he would have been 18-19 years old)... he then moved to Amsterdam, got married in 1641 (age 27), started a family (he became an innkeeper and blacksmith)... and then took the voyage to America in 1651 (age 37) with his young family of five. Although tradition holds that the family originated in Italy (either Genoa or Trieste) there is no direct evidence... and in fact, initial DNA results indicate there is no match since the Dutch/American Fonda line is Anglo-Saxon and the Italian Fonda line is Basque.
