I just read this old (2003) message about a MARCUS FOLLOWELL of Kentucky. My mother's grandfather was William Montgomery BUT it was rumored in the family that this was not his real name. His real name was said to be WILLIAM MARCUS FOLLOWELL and it was believed that he was born in Casey County, Kentucky. The rumor had that he changed his name because he was running from lawmen in Kentucky and that he had killed two people. He eventually settled in Crossville, Tennessee. I don't know if this story is true or not but have tried to find information on a Marcus Followell in Kentucky and was excited to see this post.

Hi, Jo Dale! I'm the oldest daughter of your first cousin Mike. Papa (as we called him) was indeed a sweetheart and I miss him every day.

I'm only actually certain as far back as Lewis Hiram. Any information I've gotten further back has probably come from my aunt Heather's or my cousin Charles' (Cathy's son) trees.

Biggest item of interest was that Fred Logan and Clara Ella were actually half-cousins. Their mothers were both daughters of Malinda Ballinger, though with different fathers. My dad actually confirmed this for me.

Jo Dale
Hello Cousin! Thank you for your reply.

1. Like you, I am having a hard time with the parents of William Followell (b. 1818). I looked at your tree and you have his middle initial as "B". How did you get "B" as a middle initial?

2. How did you discover that William F Followell and Margery Miles were the parents of William Followell (b. 1818)?

3. I am writing biographies of the Followells starting with my grandparents (Claud and Cora) and ending with John Followell (b. 1747). However, I am partially blocked at William Followell because I am not sure of his parents. I plan to release the William and Margery generation biography with the assumption that his parents are William F and Margery in a couple of weeks. My email address is cabgriffith@q.com If you send me your email address I will email you the website address that contains the biographies.

Gary Griffith
PS: My mother was Velma Followell, daughter of Claud and Cora Followell.

Richard Duane Followell's line is>John & Eliz Helm Followell>John & Mary Warwick Followell>Geo.& Anna Cox Followell>Patterson C. Followell & Rachel Hurley Followell.Patterson died & Rachel Married second,a Mr. Percifield. I have his first name but do not recall it at the moment. I have researched about 25 family lines,my Spees & Barker & related lines and Richard's Followell & Stilley Lines. The first Followell to move from Indiana to Saline CO. ILL was Richard's grandfather John Noah Followell. I have to go for now but will try to get back to you soon. I love researching genealogy and I will try to e-mail you with more info soon and compare Followell genealogy. There is another Followell that I correspond with & have met who lives in Houston TX. Did live in Dallas TX.
Sincerely Jerretta and Richard Followell

Thank you for your reply KesYocum. We have essentially the same information but I am suspicious that our information may be wrong. I will try to describe below:

1. There were two William Followells living in Monroe County Indiana during the 1840s. William M Followell married Margaret Breedlove (m. 1834) and died in the Civil War. The other William married Tabitha Ann Pope (m. 1845) moved to Cumberland County Illinois in 1868, then to Desoto Illinois, and then died in Mattoon Illinois in 1907. Most of the Ancestry.com Family Trees have these two Williams as one and the same person. I believe this is wrong. One of these two Williams is the son of William F Followell. Unfortunately, I am not sure which one. I suspect the William who married Tabitha Ann Pope is the son of William F Followell and Margery Miles Followell.

2. There is no evidence that William Followell's (b. 1818) middle name was Jefferson. The census data does not show his name as Jefferson. His marriage record does not show his middle name as Jefferson. His death record does not show his middle name as Jefferson.

I know that I am alone on this issue but I believe I am correct.

Any Ideas? Again, thank you for your reply.

Gary Griffith

My name is Gary Griffith. I am looking for information about David Followell born 1856 Monroe Indiana. David is my great grandfather. In particular I am looking for his spouse's name, his death date, and where he lived. His children's names were William, Thomas Jefferson, Claude Jackson, Nora, Guy, and Elizabeth. The last information I have is the 1870 census in Cumberland County Illinois when he was 13. I know his children were raised by his uncles John McClellen Followell and Thomas Jefferson Followell in Desoto Illinois. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you for your response. It is quite unusual.

I don't believe our families are related. But I will keep your history in mind as I research further.

My great grandmother was born 11/16/1866 in Mahaska County, Ia. She married John David Nelson. She had 13 children with John. The limited information I have comes from her death certificate that shows her mother's maiden name as Elisabeth Wells born in Indiana and father Marshall Followill born in Pa. Emma Reta had siblings from 1880 census named: Lucinda, Tobitha both under name Wilson and Sarah Wright all born in Mahaska IA. In 1885 their name changes to Hill. Elisabeth shows herself as a widow on both the 1880 and 1885 census report. I am unable to locate them after 1885 so far.

Again thank you for your response. I appreciate your offer of assistance.

I have a Tabitha Ann Pope (b. about 1826 in Indiana to Simon Pope and Rebecca Prince) married to a William Jefferson Followell in 1845. Their oldest son was Lewis Hiram Followell (b. 1848) married to Matilda Ann Ballinger in 1870. Lewis and Matilda's son Fred Logan Followell (b. in Toledo, IL in 1886) married Clara Ella Sampson in 1910. Their youngest son Fred Jr Followell (b. 1924 in Denver, CO) married Shirley Ruth Goddard in 1948. Fred and Shirley's son Michael Dennis Followell (b. 1949 in Sanoma, CA) married Carol Ann Evanson in 1974 and had me in 1976.

My records do show Tabitha and William's youngest son to be a John McClellan Followell, born in 1867 in Indiana and died in Riverside, CA in 1957.

Cousins?

Hello, I am a descendant of John and Elizabeth Helm Followell through their daughter Mahala Followell who married William Percifield(sp?) and their daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Percifield who married Bartlet Hatchett and their daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hatchett who married Samuel Strickland whose son is Ova Strickland, my grandfather. The Stricklands are clustered in Posey County, Indiana.

I suspect that Mahala Followell had some Indian blood. I know that Mahala is an Indian name (I googled it and it says Cherokee, Chocktaw, or other southeastern Indian tribes).

I would like to see if you have any further information about Mahala or her parents.

Thanks, Turner Jones Houston TX

I have found William and Mahala Percifield in the Indiana 1850 census. The census taker misspelled their last name as "Pericifield". They have three children listed one of whom is Mary who is 16 years old. Another child is 12, Elizabeth, who is my great, great grandmother.
This is probably a dead thread because it has been so long since anybody has posted. But I have found more information concerning Mahala. See:

http://www.hudson-tech.com/genealogy/I7042.asp

Just click on the names and you can find her parents and her parent's parents. I will post more information as I find it. I am interested in the American Indian blood lineage that I believe to be in Mahala's ancestors. I think it goes back to Marquis Calmes a French plantation owner in Virginia.

I am suspicious that William's middle name is not Jefferson but perhaps the initial F. I think William was born in Crawford Co. Indiana in 1818.

Hello Followells. My name is Gary Griffith and I am writing biographies on at least 5 of my Followell grandparents including John Followell (b 1747). I plan to share these biographies (90% completed) when they are complete (hopefully with a few months). However I am having a problem with my 3rd grandfather William Followell (b 1818). I am not sure of the identity of his parents. I believe his parents are William F Followell (b. 1776) and Margery Miles (b. 1786) but I am not sure. Unfortunately, there is some confusion in almost all of the Ancestry.com trees. Most of the trees show Wiliam Followell (b. 1818) being married to Margaret Breedlove (m. 1834). I am pretty sure William (b. 1818) did not marry Margaret Breedlove. I believe Margaret married a different William Followell. His name was William M Followell (b 1812) who died in the Civil War. My William Followell (b. 1818) who married Tabitha Ann Pope in 1845 left Monroe County Indiana and moved to Cumberland County Illinois (1868), then Desoto Illinois (1890s), and eventually died in Mattoon Illinois in 1907.

Since there were two William Followells living in Monroe County Indiana at the same time (1840s) it clouds the issue of who were the parents. Was William M Followell (b. 1812) who married Margaret Breedlove the son of William F Followell. Or, was William Followell (b. 1818) who married Tabitha Ann Pope the son of William F Followell? Or were they both the son of William F Followell?

There is a second unanswered question regarding the middle initial of my William Followell (b. 1818) who married Tabitha Ann Pope. Most of the Ancestry trees have his middle name as "Jefferson". I am suspicious that this is not correct. Does anyone have any source material indicating his middle name was "Jefferson"? None of the Census records refers to "Jefferson". His marriage record does not refer to "Jefferson". His death record does not refer to "Jefferson".

I would greatly appreciate any answers to these questions.
As I understand it, R. D. and Pleasant were brothers. They came from Kentucky to fight Santa Anna and help Texas. Robert Daugherty McAnelly was a surveyor and surveyed a large part of central Texas. The Republic had no money, so paid him with land. My father told me R. D. was having trouble paying taxes on the land, and sold the town sight of San Saba for one dollar. If you will send me your e-mail address, I can forward you some other things our daughter has recently come up with. S. Merlin McAnelly M.D., 1010 West 12th. St., Brady, TX 76825 We still have land that has never been in any other name.

Julia Anna McCrea married Cornelius McAnelly, the first white child born in Lampasas county, Texas. They are both buried in the Lometa, Texas cemetery. Cornelius was the son of Robert Daugherty McAnelly, who is buried in the Live Oak cemetery in Lampasas, Texas. Cornelius and Julia Anna were my paternal great grandparents, and I can faintly remember Julia Anna. Our only two grandchildren, after much work by their mother, this week received notice that they are now officially accepted as Daughters of the Republic of Texas. My phone number is 325.597.2021. Her number is 325.597.7623. Her name is Bonnie McAnelly.
