Out of the blue I found a Jennings cousin from the other side of the family on this site, thanks to you.

Hope all is well in the flower biz.

Cousin Doug

Hello: I sm helping my husband with some of his family research and came across your posts. His grandmother Orell Jennings Porter was Belle Jennings Benchley's sister. My husband John knew Belle and also definitely remembers his father telling him about his grandfather and great-grandfather that were SD County Sheriifs. He'd love to connect to other family.

Interesting. I would guess that they must have known each other. Amedee was seriously ill for the last 2 years of his life. He was very religious...catholic and I would suspect that a crucifix would have been something that was given to someone important to him. I love this sort of mystery. I am going to read through some of the family letters to see if there is any mention of your family. What are the names of the people who would have been his contemporaries?

I don't live in Madison any longer. I am now in San Francisco. My little sister lives in Flemington now. The last time I was back in Madison was about 18 months ago when we closed up the house. It was really sad...but I guess that is part of what happens. All 3 of us (3 sisters) have families and businesses outside of the area so it was next to impossible to know how to handle the house. We found a gentleman to take it over and he is restoring it...so we are very relieved.

I have literally cases of info from the house...books, letters, photos, sketches, etc....if there is anything you are interesting in knowing, let me know and I can dig around and send you what I have.

We all lived at 11 Madison Avenue from 1958 on. Until then we lived in my grandparent's house at 47 Madison Avenue. That was the original Blanchet House where the first members of the family first lived. When Amedee came from Guadaloupe and married Laura Blanchet, the house at 11 Madison Avenue was given to them.

I have a sketch of Amedee that my GGGAunt drew. I will scan it and send it to you. He was very dapper. :-)

Thanks for getting in touch. I have had such a hard time finding out anything about the Foignet side of my family....each little thing is so exciting.\

Talk to you soon.

Laura
Hi again...

We lived at 11 Madison Avenue...right next to James Park and across from Drew. We just sold the house as my mom is getting up there in years and could not live on her own any longer. Amedee Foignet was the husband of Laura Blanchet. Laura was the oldest daughter of Hyacinthe Blanchet. The second oldest son, Auguste Blanchet was in city or county government....maybe that might be a hint to the connection. Amedee was the governor of Guadaloupe before he moved to Madison. Hyacinthe was politically connected....friends of Lafayette and Boisaubain. If it is at all possible, I would LOVE to see copies of the articles that mention Amedee. If I read them I can likely fill in a great number of holes. Exciting! Thanks.

Laura
laura_little@floramor.com or ojo2020@aol.com

Hi Laura,
Did you live in Madison, NJ? What house did your relatives live in? My greatgrandparents lived at 53 Greenwood Avenue near Dodge Field/playground? My Ggrandfather(Lewis A Waters, Sr) was a Morris county freeholder along with his brother. Another brother, Frank, was blind and my grandparents took care of him until his death in the 60's. They are buried in the cemetrey acorss from the Madison Jr school. I am wondering how our families knew each other as I have some articles with Amedee's name. Susan

Hi Susan,

Amedee Foignet did die in 1877...I have the exact date at work and I am home today but that sounds right. He was my GGGGGrandfather. I would love to find any connection to the Foignet branch of my family. From what I can tell, the Foignet name disappeared after his brother died right after the turn of the century. Tell me what you know and I can likely figure out the connection. I grew up in the house that the family lived in from the early 1700s so I have tons of letters, birth records etc......
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Laura

It is fun....I know. It was really weird for me when I finally unraveled all of the family connections....all my life growing up I slept in the room that was used by Laura and Amedee....new mattress!!! but the same actual bed. There were signatures of them carved into the glass in one of the living room windows. I know that he married Margaret Lindsay when she was very young...I think only 17 or so. And he was about our age...I know that he did die in New York and is buried there. I have a letter from Henriette Roux Blanchet (his mother in law) that was sent to Robert Hunter (another husbnad of one of the other Blanchet daughters) that told of how the end of his life was. It was pretty greusome....but makes it all very real. He died of cancer after quite a long illness. He had had multiple amputations prior to his eventual death. I will try to find the letter and copy it for you...it says he was on laudnum for the last few months of his life and was very peaceful in the end....but a morphine/opium mix might tend to do that. Last year I spent a few weeks back east tracking down all sorts of details...it was fascinating.

I am cc ing my 19 year old daughter in College, as she is the major Francophile in the family. This all started with me trying to prove to my daughter that we were part of Clan Lindsay. I was just speaking with my mom about the New York School you mentioned. We may have the family BIble somewhere and my mom may know more.

We just sent our only daughter to college in Worcester, MA. Until about 6 years ago I was totally unaware of all of the family that I have. If you check out the Roglo site you will see how far reaching all of it is. I can actually can trace back 68 generations now...truly amasing.

I will send you all that I can find.

So exciting to meet you!

Laura

Yes...now I get it...Margaret Lindsay is also in our family plot and I thought that she was the second wife. Thanks for the confirmation. I don't know too much about his life in Guadaloupe. I have a cousin Eric who is part of the French genealogy site and he knows as much as anyone....I gather that Amedee met Hyacinthe Blanchet in Guadaloupe and came north to New Jersey to work for him. Amedee lived in Madison with his family and worked in New York. He ran a prep school in New York City. I will send you all the records that I have....they are on another computer so I will do that tomorrow. As far as time in Guadaloupe I was told that both the Blanchets and the Foignets worked as attaches to the French Crown until after the French Revolution at which time they all bet it north. I will email Eric and see if he has found anything new....this is what he does for a living so it amazed me what he finds. Laura

Wow...Leontine and Harry are both buried in our family plot in Madison New Jersey. It seems we are indeed cousins....what does that make us? Laura Blanchet as Amedee's first wife...she died at 46 and he remarried....so Leontine must be the daughter from the second marriage.
