Foan is a very rare name and I am finding a dead end with much geneology! My son tells me there are only about 25 Foans around and they are in Australia!! Maybe one or two in England. That's where my grandfather immigrated from in 1902 or 1903..Frederick Ribbet Foan was his name..any body out there have any info????

There are a few of us in England. Although we seem to be related. My father was born in Yeovil and researching Somerset records there was quite a large Foan family 150-200 year ago all connected to the leather trade.
I am in communication with the Australia connection. Daniel Foan born In Yeovil Somerset 1816 started that line.
I would very much like to hear from you and connect your side. Being an unusual name it seems we are all connected.
Hoping to hear from soon.
Regards.
Alan.

Hi, Alan, it was great to hear from you! My grandfather, Frederick Ribbet Foan came to America about 1903 to see the world's fair here in St. Louis in 1904. His family, I believe, were in the woolen trade, or perhaps tailors...not sure. he stayed because he met my grandmother, Anna Gertrude Wickham. My understanding is that he had family in Maidstone Kent. In the 1960's my father recieved a small inheritence from a Margaret Cox from that area. I dont know if this is at all familiar to you, but I sure have had a difficult time locating another "Foan"...I do have 2 cousins here in Missouri, ...Fred Foan, Ronald Foan,Fred Foan Jr. and myself. That's all I know of in this country!!...Where are you located!!??

Hi Victoria
Thanks for your reply I live here in Dawlish, Devon, England. My Foan Family is quite large, I have two brothers and a sister with three children each. My father had five brothers and two sisters most with extensive families so I have many cousins. my email address is foan_new.uk@excite.co.uk if you wish to contact me direct.
I have recently started on my family history and have the commplete UK.1881 census on CD.
A quick check for Foans in Kent shows a Frederick Foan aged 4 years was this your grandfather??.
His father was Edward Foan born Yeovil.
Where are you??
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Alan

Hi Victoria Missouri.
Checked 1881 census UK. again Frederick Foan
aged 4 years, had sister Margaret aged 3 years. Could she be your Margaret Cox ??
There father Edward from Yeovil Somerset I believe was either my grandfather Thomas's brother or first cousin.
Very exciting discovering more of the Foan's.
Hope to hear from again.
Regards
Alan.

Alan, I am so excited to hear from you again!! I noticed you wrote on Saturday...me too, of course it is a reasonable hour there!! It is only 5am here!...Anyway, I have been looking for a long time to connect myself to family. My mother died when I was 5 years old and my father when I was 19. I never met my grandfather, Frederick Foan because he was killed in a car accident in about 1927. I was born in 1951....so that makes me 48 years old. Not much contact with my 2 cousins, that are also Foans I wrote about before. So it's been a long quest and I have loved England all my life and felt very connected to it somehow....Guess I always felt there was family out there!!! I would like to send you pictures, if you would like of my grandfather and father...all the Foans I have if you like...would love to have a picture or two from your end as well!...Hope to talk to you soon. How exciting!!!!!

Hi Thanks for reply early Saturday! Correction to last message, should have said greatgrandfather Thomas Foan. I was born 1950 recently celebrated 50 years. Any information or photos would be welcome and I will research Edward Foan if he is your greatgrandfather!! I will have to go to Somerset Records Office when time allows. Full time employment curtails family research more than I would like.
Look forward to hearing from you again you have my email address on previous message.
Regards Alan.

Hello to Victoria Alan, I noticed your messages to each other on the net. I have been trying to trace my Foan families for quite sometime now, but have had no luck.
I still have rellies in UK I live in Western Australia as do my parents my brother. I do know of another FOAN family in West Aussie but I have not been able to make a connection to them yet. I have the name of a lady in the Eastern states of Aussie who is also researching the name, back to a Daniel FOAN who I believe was quite wealthy.
I have recently had an offer from a lady in USA who has sent me quite an amount of info.I would be pleased to hear from you both to compare notes. my Email address is helenjames@netunltd.com.au.
My connection so far goes back to my ggg grandfather George FOAN his son - Henry James FOAN who was born in UK went to live in USA in the early 1900's.
I was born in UK my parents emigrated to New Zealand then to Australia. My grandmother still lives in Poole
dorset UK, that is not far from you Alan.
Regards Helen
PS Can't wait to hear from you both.

Hi, Helen!! So excited to have heard from you! I almost did not "do" a Foan surname message board because it was such a long-shot, or so I thought! Now it looks like we have "found each other"...Foan IS a rare name! I have been looking for a LONG time, and always hit a "dead end"....Guess this means I must dig out my old geneology stuff and we can give each other our information...You and Alan probably have access to more info because of where you both live. Wonder how the lady, here in the states, got Foan info. Would be so glad to get this mystery going! I remember my Dad telling me (James Francis Foan Born in St. Louis, Missouri.USA in 1910)That his father, (Frederick Ribbett Foan) had been on the road alot in his business and traveled all over the USA and always looked in phone books everywhere he went..never finding another Foan! So I can't wait to hear from you either!!.....Vicki

Hi Vickki
Thanks for replying to my posting, first of all, do you have an email address, because it makes life a little easier to send mail back forth, instead of going thru this message board.
I have been in contact with Alan comparing notes.
If you go to ancestry.com put in the name FOAN you can get a long list of them from all over. Let me know how you go, I am pretty sure that ;is the address.
I was born in UK, but have lived in
Wstern Australia for nearly 20 years. My parents are here, I have traced back to my gg grandfather born in Berkshire Uk.
There are actually quite a number of FOAN's in USA UK. There are a smaller few in Australia, but so far I have not made a connection except of course my immediate family.
Anyway it is nice to have someone else to compare notes with, I look forward to hearing from you soon, but don't forget to send me you email address.
Regards Helen
