From my grandfather (Robert Fiola), I've learned only that four brothers with the Vignola name came to America from Canada and each took a different surname. If any more can be learned, I'd like to know.

thank you! we are on a trip through the maritime provinces. today we board a ferry for Labrador then return to Newfoundland. In a couple of weeks, we will be in Rimouski and we are going to try to find some of the headstones. I will get pictures of whatever we find.

If you have information about where the Fiola families are buried too, that would be great! Many churches have cemeteries affiliated with them so I know to look near St Germain Cathedral. Any other thoughts?

Again, thank you.

ann

I have very little information about Joseph...
Joseph married Genevieve Despres in Rimouski before 31 December 1754

They had one child Joseph, born about 1756, although his birth has not been documented.

Joseph #1 was listed several times in documents as being a "German soldier from Hungary"

The parents of Joseph Fiola/Vignola have never been documented. The appearance of Joseph in the Riviére Hatée area of Rimouski, dates to about 1754 according to the PRDH. His marriage to Geneviéve has not been found. In a marriage document held by PRDH, the parents of Joseph #2 are listed as Joseph Fiola and Geneviéve Dépres.

It is possible that the actual origin of our Joseph Fiola will never be known.

Since there is no FIOLA listed in Hesse-Hanau, Brunswick or
Anhalt-Zerbts rolls,I have searched many German soldiers rolls that would have been fighting in the US or Canada at that time, but have never come across the name Fiola or anything similar. Also, there were many Germans who settled in the Rimouski area at the same time as Joseph #1...

He was buried in Rimouski Feb. 26 1805 (aged >> 71
Joseph said to be a laborer. Died yesterday, aged about 71. There is no mention of his wife. Present are sons Joseph, Barnabe and Augustin Fiola, friends Jean Lavoie, Michel and Germain Saint Laurent, Antoine Banville and many others. All declared they could not sign.
This Wilfred may be the son of Joseph Elzear Fiola (vignola) and Amanda Caron. Three trees show him with a DOB 1915 but I show him abt 1905 in both 1920 and 1930 census. If I have time I will investigate further to see if he also married Ida Lacombe. I do not see 2 Wilfred Fiola's in Fall River area.

This is actually Elzear Fiola (6 Feb 1852-20 Mar 1912) son of Jean Baptiste Fiola and Marcelline Levesque (J. Bap distant cousin of Anthime and and Regule above). This Elzear had a brother Denis b1953 who's family may have gained Barnaby for a surname. Barnaby comes from Jean Baptise father Barnabe.

As for the Wilfred in a previous message in this thread, I suspect he is the son of Jos. Elzear and Amanda above. Possibly the Ida Lacombe mentioned is a second wife. Both show passing while living in Somerset, MA (suburb across Taunton River from Fall River). Wilfred 1989, Ida, 1981
Just a not I forgo to add. I know I have the same Alfred as Cliff mentioned because the woman I am helping also told me her grand mother was Nellie Spearing. Her father Kenneth was born in 1926 so it could not be the Alfred mentioned by Paula b1913. That would make hin 13 with children. She also added her grandfather was born about the time I have Alfred's birth of 1901. The 1910 census has thus Alfred in Minnesota with the family. He was born in Canada but his younger siblings Raoul (Mar 16, 1902-family knew his name pronounced like Rail), Eugene (1902 not twin, possibly late 1902), Arthur (Nov 7 1902), Ernestine (1906).

In reviewing the Elzear Blais/Marguerite Bouillon with child Angeline, I have some real doubts. The trees list Angeline b 1876. That would make father only 8 having a child? LOL

To be continued....

Re: I think I found Alfred!

I have many siblings of this Joseph Elzear Fiola (Jun 1868-1925). He was the son of Germain Anthime Fiola who was married to Clarisse Pineau. In the 1871 census, Antime is displayed as Antoine Fiola age 28 with Clarisse also 28. 5 children at the time, Marie (7), Adele (5), Germain (4), Joseph (3), Josue (9/12) living in St Ancelet. Quebec > Rimouski West > St Anaclet > Page 25 of 30 in ancestry.com records. The 1st child "Josue Elzear" was born 1863 but dies 1866. Som trees have a Telesphore b1870 but I have seen no records and it's in my tree only until I can prove/disprove. I'm thinking possibly a twin of the second Josue who dis not survive. After 1871, there is Augustin (1874-1955), Marie Anne (1876), Napoleon (1877), Adelard (1878-1946), Pierre (1880), Alphonse (1881). I also came across a correspondence on the internet that speaks of a Denis who is alledge to be a brother of (Joseph) Elzear. The facts here are bit tricky. Some trees are listing a Elzear Blais (1968-1912) a child in this family and married to Marguerite Bouillon with a daughter Angeline (1876-1945). This correspondence discusses Denis being Angeline's uncle. I have reason to believe that Joseph Elzear Fiola and Elzear Blais are on in the same. Some clues: Joseph and Almina had a son Alfred. He is the grandfather of the woman I am doing this tree for. She told me about Alfred being a bootleger and having an alias Alfred Blair. Now could have have gotten the name idea from his father using alias Elzear Blais?

There is another Joseph Elzear Fiola also born 1868 and also who moved to Fall River but he was born in July and turns out to be the cousin of the other. His father was Regule (brother of Anthime) who married Pymphrose. J.E. married Amanda Caron and died in 1935. They are 2 different people as I have seen both baptism records here on Ancestry.com.

I will be putting together more proof and will be happy to keep everyone up to date on my findings. Please message me thru ancestry.com if you would like to continue to correspond.

Thanks,
Dwayne
Paula, I believe you have the wrong Alfred. Turns out I am doing a tree for Cliff's cousin in Fall River. She is daughter of the brother Kenneth that Cliff mentioned. This Alfred's father was Joseph Elzear Fiola. They lived for approx. 20 years in Minnesota before moving to Fall River. I know your posts were quite some time ago and you may know this by now. If not and you would like more info, please contact me thru Ancestry messaging.

Thanks,
Dwayne

Any info would help, trying to start the tree for my grandson.

I never expected of knowing a lot of the same family name as I have. My full name is Manuel Leandro B. Fiola. I am the youngest son of Mr. Manuel Fiola. I have two brothers who named Manuel Rey and Jose Bagane and one sister who named Beulah Lawanin. We are pure Filipino, we grew up in the Philippines. Now I am working here in Thailand. I hope we could share a lot of informations and might as well get along. Thanks a lot for reading!

Best regards,
Leandro

email address : leanfiola@yahoo.com
Yahoo Messenger : leanfiola
Thanks, Paula. Henry Joseph Fiola's father was Joseph Fiola, and his mother Josephine Delphine Fiola. I think Josephine's maiden name was Lavvin (two v's). Henry Joseph was born in Iron River, Wisconsin in 1896, was one of about 12 children (six of whom survived). They moved to Fall River when he was a year old (1897) apparently to be near relatives.

I'd love to see the family tree. You can email me directly at henryfiola@yahoo.com if you prefer.

Thanks again.

She held a membership in Philomathean club, and Home Chapter, Order of The Eastern Star.
Besides her parents, the deceased leaves her husband, Frank J. Fiola, who conducts a local tailoring establishment, a charming daughter, Miss Bernice Fiola, and two sisters who were away on vacation when the time came; Mrs. Charles Hencemann and Mrs. C.C. Anderson.
Mrs. Fiola was born Dec. 289, 1879 in this city, and was married here December 18, 1895.

Stockton Record, 8/26/1921

I have Adelard Fiola married to Marie-Jeanne Berube, 10 Jan. 1905 in Humqui, Quebec.

Among their nine children were a Raoul, born 1902 and an Alfred, born 1913. They also had:Ludger 1908, Marie-Anne 1911, Andeline 1914, Marie-Blanche 1915, Joseph-Leo 1917, and Helene 1927.

From the data I have, it seems that most of the siblings remained in Quebec. But I do know for a fact, that Raoul came to Fall River, he married Yvonne Pelchat.

Hi Cliff, Welcome to the family... Do you know your greatgrandfather's name? What year was your dad born?

I'm trying to place him in the family. I have several Alfred's in the family tree, but none in Fall River. Can you give me a few more hints on the family? Do you remember your grandmother's name?

Also, the Fiola's like to use names sometimes that weren't actually the "real" first names! Or last names for that matter!

I have the Fiola's back to Joseph our first ancestor in North America and would be happy to share with you. You can email me directly and we can get your Alfred to fit in!!

I live nearby in Westport.....
