William Patrick Finnigan

Hi, i'm hoping someone can anyone help me find some information about my G G grandad William Patrick Finnigan. I think he was born around 1854 in Ireland, he married a Sindonia Price and had two children that I know of, Mabel and Rose. Sindonia was born in Herefordshire but I know that in 1881 she was in a smallpox hospital in Greenwich and then in the 1891 she appears as a domestic in Ealing. Family myth has Patrick as a seaman working on ocean liners between Liverpool and America, family myth also has him drowning during one of these voyages which must have been before 1907 as my G grandmothers marriage cert from this date shows him to be deceased. Thanks.

Looking for descendants of John Finnigan and Mary Slyman or Slymon of Stockport near Manchester

John Finnigan was born around 1869 in Stockport. Mary Slyman was born around 1868 in Liverpool. They were married in Stockport in 1897 and had at least five children: Ellen, Thomas, May, Lily, John. I think Thomas was a World War I veteran. I'm interested in connecting with any living descendants of those children because I believe they are distant relatives of mine.

My grandmother's grandmother was Kate Slyman, born in Liverpool around 1870. She moved to Ireland and married Michael Corcoran in Hollymount, Co. Mayo. In July of 1894, Mary Slyman put a notice in The Manchester Times requesting information about Kate Slyman, who she had not heard from in five years. At the time, Mary was working at the Barnes Convalescent Hospital in Cheadle. It seems almost certain that the two were sisters. According to the family, one of the Corcorans later spent time in England with the Slymans, so it would seem they did eventually reconnect.

I'm trying to prove that Kate and Mary were sisters, and also trying to figure out why the family split. I may have found them in the 1871 English census and I'm trying to prove that as well. I'd love to hear from anyone with more information.

My first cousin once removed, Michael Covell in London England was able to give me a small family tree with my great grand parents to my father Peter J. Finnigan, and my Uncle Andrew T. Finnigan. He was also able to send me photo's of the family from their wedding, and another event. Thomas Finnigan is in the Photo. Michael Covell is a member of ancestry.com. so you'll be able to find him and email him to get to know him and get the photo's. Also could you please send me a photo of my father Peter J. Finnigan. He never gave me a photo. Or if he did, my mother did something with it because she wasn't happy with him.
Shawn

Hello Kelsey,

I'm your cousin Shawn Wittman. I have my mom's maiden name because my father peter J. Finnigan and my mom were never married. It's wonderful to meet you. I know I have a sister Denise. I called the police station once to talk with my father, and they told me that he had just retired. This was back in 1989. they told me his brother was there, and it made my jaw drop. So I spoke to him and he told me about her but only told me that she lived in the city of San Dimas. As for my father he wouldn't tell me a thing and he didn't want to meet me. He said he didn't want to come between me and my father. If you'd ever like to email me I have 2 addresses. One is on google and the other is on yahoo through the phone company here. So google is wittman51@gmail.com and yahoo is shawn_wittman@att.net the one with yahoo my email address is my chat ID.
Shawn

Hi There, Thank you so much for getting in touch with me. My father Peter Finnigan for some reason is to embarrassed to be in touch with me. I guess that's because he got my mother pregnant before they were married. Then with her knowing A LOT of the deputies he worked with, he didn't want anything to do with me. I also have a half sister Michelle. Her mother said that while she was pregnant he told her. "After you give birth, get rid of that thing!!" I called the police station once to talk with my father pete, and I talked with my uncle Andrew. I asked him if I could ever at least meet him one of these days. He said NO I don't want to come between you and your father. Like he could, my father was never a part of my life. But I was able to be in contact with our cousin Mike Covell in London England.
Have you ever been to America? One of these days if you ever come to America, and come to the state of California. Let me know I'll see you at the Airport, and I'll show you around.
I do have a question about the family in general. Does any one in the family have epilepsy? I ask you this because I have severe epilepsy, and it popped in to my life when I was 20. My neurologist is curious if it runs in the family, so could it have been passed on to me. As for pete he doesn't care if I'm alive or dead, but i wonder if Denise or any of her kids has epilepsy. That's if she has kids. Uncle Andrew told me about my sister Denise.
One quick question, is my father Peter Finnigan still alive, and if so. What is the current city and state he's living in? Please tell him about my first brain surgery. I had a right temporal lobectomy and I came so close to death in the surgery it brought tears to the eyes of the surgeon. They couldn't stop the bleeding. I'm disabled because of severe epilepsy. Sorry I wrote you a novel.
Shawn Wittman

I realize this is quite old by now, but I came across it and thought I would say hello if anyone is still on here. Peter Finnigan (retired homicide detective with Los Angeles county, originally born in England) is my uncle. My father, Andrew Finnigan is his younger brother. If you have questions about the family, grandparents, cousins, your half sister, etc I would be more than happy to tell you anything I know, which really isn't too much, as Pete moves around a lot.

Brady/Finnigan - County Cavan - Dundee, Scotland

I feel like this has to be easier than I am making it! My gg grandmother’s name was Mary Brady. She was born around 1858 and lived in Drumavaddy, County Cavan. She married Thomas McPhillips in 1874 in Clones, County Monaghan. The young couple told the priest that they were on their way to America, but they somehow wound up in Dundee, Scotland where Thomas became a police constable and later a publican.

I can fill in most of Mary’s details (i.e. her children), but what puzzles me is who are her parents?!? On the record of death, her son Thomas listed her parents as Owen Brady and Mary Newman. However, on the record of marriage, Mary listed her parents as Edward Brady and Isabella McKenna!

Mary had a sister named Ellen, who married Patrick Finnigan and lived in Cavan, possibly moving to Belfast later on. Ellen and Patrick had a lot of children, many of whom wound up in Dundee, so I am hoping that one of their descendants will see this and may know Ellen’s parents’ names. Mary and Ellen must at least have the same father in common. Ellen was likely a lot older than Mary, as Ellen’s son Andrew was only a few years younger than Mary. Also, there must have been siblings in between, but I have not been able to find them!

Here is a list of Ellen’s children (I think….):
Andrew Finnigan, born in County Cavan around 1860, died in 1924 in Lochee, Scotland. By the way, his son Charles served as Honorary Dental Surgeon to the Queen from 1955-1960
John Finnigan (1865-1912)
Belle Finnigan (1867-?)
Mary Anne Finnigan (1870-?)
Patrick Finnigan (1872 or 1873 – possibly two children named Patrick and the first died?)
Michael Finnigan (1875-?)
Charles Finnigan (1879-?)
Peter Finnigan (?)
Edward Finnigan (?)

I have a lot of information about Ellen’s children as several of them affected Mary’s life.
If anyone has any information on Mary’s parents or other siblings, I would be so grateful!
Hi, I know I am joining this conversation late.
My great grandmother was a Finnigan. My grandmother was a finnigan, first name Katherine, middle name Ellen. She went by "Kay". She was raised in MT and then moved to NY. She fell in love and married Richard Hilferty. Together they had 8 children and lived in Miller Place, LI. I believe that orginally her family migrated from Ireland, to Canada and then eventually MT. I am trying to get a handle on the migration as my 13 year old daughter is very interested. One factor that had me joine this thread is that the spelling is Finnigan. (no "e").

Hello Shawn,

I've only just seen your emails on this site and I believe I'm your first cousin once removed on your father's side. The Peter and Andrew you talk about are my cousins. Their father and my mother had the same father - my grandfather Finnigan - although they had different mothers as my grandfather's first wife died and he then remarried.
His name was Thomas Finnigan and he was your great-grandfather.
I have photographs of your Finnigan grandparents (and of some of the previous generation of Finnigans) and I've done a fair bit of family history research myself, tracing my (and your) Finnigan roots further back.
If you like to send me a private email address, I'd be more than happy to share all that information with you.
Best wishes,
Mike Covell - mike.covell@virgin.net
Hey There,
Just to let you know, I interrogated my mom, and she told me that I got what she said in the past wrong. My father Peter Finnigan didn't live in Santa Monica, California. They just always had a great time there since that was a city right at the beach. He lived in Pasadena, California. He was 31 when I was born on Oct. 20, 1970. So it looks like his birth year was 1939. I also say that they came to the USA when he was a baby, because my father Peter J. Finnigan only had an American accent. I hope that you and I are related. I'm dying to find a relative on my fathers side that can accept me. His brother named Andrew is basically 7 to 10 years younger than he is, please take care.
your buddy
Shawn

Sorry I haven't responded in such a long time. I've been going through hell with my disability, and the doctor visits.
As for the dates on the Finnigan side of the family, al I can really say is that I know that my father Peter J. Finnigan was born back in 1939 in the UK. But the name of his Parents, I haven't the faintest idea. Since he refused to spend any time with me, I have no idea what the names of my grand parents are, or where they were. My uncle didn't even know I was alive until I called the police station and I talked to him, he was shocked like I was.
your buddy
Shawn

Hi, this is Shawn Wittman the son of Peter J. Finnigan. My email addresses are shawn_wittman@att.net this is with the American phone company AT&T. They merged with Yahoo as a Internet service. so that email address is also my yahoo chat ID. My other is with googles g mail it's wittman51@gmail.com. So send the emails to either one you'd like. If you have any questions just let me know, I don't know too much about him because as soon as he found out my mom was pregnant he proposed. When she asked am I your true love he said no, so she said no. Then he just stayed away from me like I had the most deadliest and most contagious disease on earth. But I know he's from the UK, his career was law enforcement, he was a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. here in the state of California. When I was born in 1970 he was 31.

yours truly
Shawn Wittman

Hey Steve,
Now there are ALLOT of Finnigans around. that's because the start of the name Finnigan in ancient Ireland came from the phrase "the fair headed one." I wonder if they mean color of hair, or train of thought?. But either way it makes it such a common name like Smith or Jones or Johnson. I have a friend in Ireland and she told me there is bar called "The Finnigan Pub." Now from ancestry.com I ran into a distant cousin in the finnigan family that's related to me. He loves doing the research, so he gave me all the info and it came right up to my father, uncle, and half sister. It's Mike Covel. My father Peter John Finnigan and my uncle Andrew Finnigan were both born in the United Kingdom. Their parents are Albert Finnigan and Florrie Wood. The great grand father is Thomas Finnigan. The classic Finnigan family crest is a falcon alighting proper. and the classic family motto is "I would rather die than be dishonorable"
Sincerely
Shawn

I have the information on how the Finnigan family name got started. I got that from the Historical Research Center. I'll give you a message of everything they gave me. Just let me know if you'd like it. It doesn't give the name of relatives, it explains how the name got started a LONG time ago in Ireland.

My great-great grandmother was Ellen Finnegan. She married Michael O'Brien and they lived in Mendon, NY which is not far from Lima, New York. Ellen Finnegan O'Brien was born about 1829 and died about 1900. She is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Victor, NY. She had 6 children; Margaret, Thomas,Mary,Anna,James and Michael (O'Brien). Any information about Finnegans from Mendon or surrounding areas would be helpful.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the reply. That is fascinating. My brother is called Peter Finnigan too.
I'm guessing that your Dad's parents aren't the same Finnigans that I'm looking for - I think the ones I'm searching for left England in the 1880s.
However if you have any history of your Dad's family (parents names, dates of birth etc, siblings names) it might be useful.

Worldwide there ain't that many Finnigans around (especially with that spelling) so we could be related & it might be worth trying to fit the jigsaw together.

Best Regards
Steve

My great grandfather was called Patrick Finnigan and he came possibly from Ballinasloe or Killimore in Ireland and was born round about 1835. He married Mary Smith in England in 1859 and lived in Salford Lancashire. He was a baker. I know his father was called John Finnigan and he was a farmer but I have no record of John in England. Can anyone provide some information about Patrick's origins and family in Ireland or about John, his father.

That's on www.intelius.com But he doesn't have me down as a relative since he didn't marry my mom.
Hey Steve,

You're welcome buddy. Now as for my father, i don't know much about him at all. That's because after I was born he never wanted to be around. He stayed away from me and my mother as if we were infected with aids; and you could get it just like you get the flu.
But when i caled the police station the second time. they said he has retired, but his brother is still here. So my uncle's name is Andrew. Now i also have a half sister from Peter J. Finnigan, and her name is Denise. That's what uncle andrew told me. He said. "you have EVERY right to know this, but other than this i don't want to get involved! you have a sister named Denise!" Then he hung up on me. As for peter's and Andrew's parents, I have no idea. I was hoping i could find that out on ancestry. But i see that a denise finnigan lives in San Dimas Ca., and a peter Finnigan lives there now. When he dated my mom he lived in Santa Monica. I hope any of this was helpful.
take care
Shawn

Hell Thomas, this is shawn. I'm the son of Peter J. Finnigan. We're all here in America. Peter Finnigan here was born in England, but his parents immigrated to the USA when he was a baby. Then when he was older, but a young man. He became a police officer. He was a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff, and half of his career was being a homicide detective.
As for he and I, we have only met twice. As soon as i was born he left my mom since they weren't married. So i have my mothers maiden name. If you'd like the history on the Finnigan family name. Just let me know, and I'll get that too you.
Sincerely
Shawn Wittman

I apologize for not responding sooner. No,I do not belive your Hugh and mine are the same person. My great great uncle Hugh Quigley, son of Hugh Quigley and Mary Kindelan, was born in Lurgenboys, Donaghmoyne Parish, County Monaghan, Ireland about 1860. He married Margaret McCullouck, born 1862 in Consett,9 Jan 1882 in Lanchester, County Durham. Please let me know how your research turned out in Durham. There still might be a connection. You can e-mail at william.quigley@comcast.net. Best of luck in your research.
Regards
William A.
