My family has done some research on this. The earliest Fitch (single F) graves are found in Finchingfield (one of England's prettiest villages) and Steeple Bumpstead in North
West Essex (on the wat to Cambridge). The double ff is old English. All double ff ffitch's should not use a capital letter as the double small ff is a replacement for a single capital F. It was introduced as in Old English the capital F had a think stem that had to be filled in. For simplicity people used ff as a replacement for F. If you look in the telephone book there are a number of double ff ffrenches, ffords etc etc. Most people mistakenly use Ff. The Professor of Old English at Oxford University told me this.

I hope this helps.
