It still leaves unanswered our 8 year old John's history.
Does anyone have source material for the line of David, son of John Fay and Susanna Shattuck, b. 4/23/1679?
rfay4(nospam)@cfl.rr.com

John Fay (repeated with a correction)

This information comes from the Bennington Museum in VT. It's listed in my information as "The House Family of Bennington, Vermont." My mom's maiden name was House which leads to the Fay family.
Here's what it says: "…the most powerful line were the Fays. They were descended from the De la Fayes of Peyraud, on the Rhone River in France...mostly Huguenots, and in 1561 it's recorded that Antoine XIII opened his chateau to Protestants. At that time 7 De Fays all related, Catholics and Protesants were the leaders in the Religious Wars of France...After the Massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572, some Fays went to England and joined forces with Oliver Cromwell. The record here is disjoined but (it) shows that John Fay, an orphan, was born in 1648 and came to America as a boy of 8, with relatives, the Brighams. John Fay married Mary Brigham and the family moved to what is now Westborough. Their son John was b. 1669 and died 1747. He married Elizabeth Wellington and became the first Town Clerk of Westborough in 1717, also a Selectman."
The rest of what I have here is of my House-Billings family. You might write to the Bennington Museum in Vermont to ask for the documentation.
I'll keep adding, if I find stuff. Gail T. P.S. I also found an obscure note that stated that the original John wasn't really an orphan. His father's name, allegedly, was Daniel. How and why they got separated, I don't know. I hope to find that obscure note again. G.T.

John Fay ships list

Ships to America - The Speedwell, 1656

An alphabetic list of ships to America is provided at Ship Index.
A list of more ships to New England is provided at Ships & Passengers

The Speedwell of London Voyages are listed at ship name on Ship List May 27, 1656, The Speedwell, from London (Gravesend), arrived at Boston, New England

Source: "Passengers to America, A Consolidation of Ship Passenger Lists from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register" Edited by Michael Tepper Selected excerpts from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, Maryland, 1977, page 462.

Ship and Passenger Information:

This list is annotated by the Searcher's office, Gravesend, England, with the date of "30th May, 1656". However, an additional annotation indicates they "were Landed at Boston in N. E. the 27th of the Month, 1656. J. E." The list may have been prepared at departure by the Searcher's office or later by the vessel's master, under a high bond as assurance of the accuracy about those actually making the voyage (such lists were dated at arrival and were endorsed at the Searcher's office on return of the vessel). The source listing, however, shows the "J.E." entry as an endorsement after that of the Searcher's office. In this case, the initials "J.E." were not those of the master and the month was not specified. This leaves questions about the month in which the "27th" actually occurred - before, during, or after May.
Robert Lock, Master

41 passengers listed.

Stratton, Richard
Mulfoot, John
Smith, Richard 43
Brinsley, Francis 22
Noyce, Thomas 32
Edwards, Mathew
Boules, Joseph 47
Brand, William 40
Copeland, John 28
Holder, Christopher 25
Thurston, Thomas 34
Prince, Mary 21
Gibbons, Sarah 21
Weatherhead, Mary 26
Waugh, Dorothy 20
Smith, Lester 24
Clarke, Christopher 38
Lane, Edward 36
Richardson, Tho: (Thomas) 19
Earle, John 17
Barnes, Thomas 20
Hopgood, Shudrack 14
Goodynough, Thomas 20
Goodinough, Nathaniel 16
Fay, John 8
Tayler, William 11
Smith, Richard 28
Munnings, Muhuhulett 24
Mott, Margarett 12
Reeue (Reeve), Henry 8
Seker, Henery 8
Morse, John 40
Dauison (Davison), Nickolus 45
Baldwin, John 21
Baldwin, Mary 20
Worster, Rebeca (sic) 18
Wigins, John 15
Miller, John 24
Home, Thomas 11
Crane, John 11
Baalam, Charels (sic) 18

There is an actual .jpeg of the ships list somewhere out there.
Somewhere on my computer I have the FAY bible. Also, I recall seeing information on the lineage of the Fays (from French and Huguenots) but it'll take me some time to try to find that. There's also a copy of the ship passenger list with John Fay's name on. I'll see what I can find. Will send it to you when, if I can locate it among my piles of piles. Sorry to hear about the death of Linda Fay Kaufman. But, there IS a lot of info on the Fay family.
Thanks for the contact. Has anyone contacted Kew Archives for information about why our ancestor sailed over here at age 8? Has anyone contacted Massachusetts to see if there are records on his arrival or release from indentured servitude?

Louis James Fay was my grandfather, and Margaret Elizabeth Barton was my grandmother. I'm excited! I have some of Louis's original sheet music, and I can provide additional information concerning his progeny. Louis's youngest son was my father, Joseph Willard Fay, Sr. My name is Joseph Willard Fay Jr. I am interested in any further details of my grandmother Elizabeth (as she preferred to be called), and Grandfather Louis James. He only saw me once, shortly after I was born in 1945, so I never got to talk to him. I am grateful for this information, and will provide what fill-in I can. I have one question for you: I have a different birth date for Margaret Elizabeth Barton, and I have good reason to believe that her birth year was 1880, rather than 1881. She lived with us for a while when I was a child, and showed me a Canadian dime with 1880 on it, which she claimed was given to her by someone as a keep sake of her birth year. As far as I know, she was born in Bathurst, NB, in 1880.

Re: Fay - Somerville/Cambridge MA

I'm so happy you replied. Louis' uncle Walter was my g-g-g grandfather. The information I have for Louis (who in some records I found as James Louis and in other records I found as Louis James) and Elizabeth (I'll refer to her as she preferred) come from a marriage record I found on the NEGHS website. If you check out their vital records you can find the marriage record under Vol. 513 Page 571. I'd attach a copy but when you download them you can't get a close up enough look without the image becoming blurry.

Anyway, here is the information about Elizabeth from that record. First off they were married on 02/16/1901 in Somerville MA. Elizabeth is listed as age 20 - which is where I came up with an approx. date of 1881 but seeing that they got married early in the year it is more likely that she was born in 1880. She is listed as having been born in Bathurst NB and her parents are listed as Cyril Barton and Phoebe Cummings.

For Louis I've not yet located his birth record but per the marriage record and some census records I've been able to tie him to his parents John Fay and Catherine Kiley who are in my tree. John was a brother of Walter Fay who as I mentioned above was my g-g-g grandfather.

From some pre 1915 birth records on NEGHS and the 1910 census on Ancestry I've been able to note the following children of Louis and Elizabeth.
Kathaleen Fay 7/27/1901
Arthur Louis Fay 11/08/1902
Herbert Fay 2/14/1905 - 5/15/1906
Eileen Marie Fay 7/17/1907
Richard Warren Fay 10/21/1909
Earl Fay 8/20/1911
Marion Elizabeth Fay 03/7/1914

The state of MA has only release birth records through 1915 so if there are other younger children I haven't been able to source them - I'm also having a hard time finding the 1920 census record for this family.

However in the 1930 census I was able to find an Elizabeth M Fay (widowed) with Arthur, Earl, Marion and Joseph W living in Boston MA. This Joseph W must be your father. The census record gives an est. date of birth of 1917.

Hi tietracy!
Thanks for the last reply. Holes are being filled in. Margaret Elizabeth Barton is the Elizabeth M Fay that you found, and you're right about Joseph Willard Fay Sr. Was my Father. He was born Jun 30 1916 (the 1917 is wrong there),
and she was not widowed in 1930, but divorced. James Louis Fay didn't pass away until about 1957 or 58. Elizabeth might not have wanted people to know that she was divorced. There was a stigma attached to divorce back then. Did you get to see the email I sent here where I related details about my sister and cousins?
By the way, I'd love to talk to a long-lost cousin...573-636-3765
Joe Fay Jr.

Just in case it would be helpful, here's a little more information about Charlotte Ann's husband and family; She married James Burt Conkey 01 Mar 1870 and they had four sons Elmer Foster (my great grandfather), Louis, Albert C., and Harold Elgin. Elmer married Caroline Putnam Hayward and they had 7 children Howard Nelson, Roy Lincoln, Lewis, Helen Brewster, Lester Hayward, Harold Foster, and Gertrude Louise (my grandmother).
Fay Family Information

I have been researching this line of Fay's from Germany for quite some time now. I have seen that there are some errors to people, places, and dates. If you are a direct line to John and Barbara Fay and their descendants please contact me. John and Barbara were from Germany and came to Illinois. They are the parents of Michael Fay, who in turn married 3 different times; 1)Jinney Ann Youngblood, 2)Martha Burton, 3)Mary Bradley Greenawalt. Michael and Jinney Ann had 2 daughters; Sarah Francis and Martha Jane. Michael and Martha had 2 sons; Andrew Jackson and Jacob Henry. No known children from Michael and Mary. Jacob Fay is my gg-grandfather. He married Mary Reynolds; had 5 children; Herman (my g-grandfather), Lena, Levi, Louis, and an infant baby that died. I have quite of alot of info, and I'm waiting for records from the State Of Illinois. This family lived in the Sangamon County area for most of all their lives. A few had moved away, one to Kansas, one to Idaho....so if anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me. I will TRY to help with any questions you may have. What caught my eye was that in Ancestry.com there are people that have in their family trees, some of my ancestors, and some of the info they have is not correct. I would love to compare any notes that anyone has.

Re: Charlotte Fay from Massachusetts

Greetings from a third cousin once removed. I see that your message is 4 years old, but still has no replies. I found your message while doing my own search for Charlotte Fay. Found her quickly with a simple Google search. If you already have the following information, I apologize.
Charlotte was the daughter of Nathan (1785-1873), son of Thos. (1751-1837), son of Ebenezer (1713-1790),son of Samuel (1673-1732). The Fays appear at length in a genealogy of the Orlin family.
In addition to Charlotte Ann Foster, Charlotte Fay had three sons. One was Joseph Milton Foster, my great-grandfather. Another was Elgin, who curiously married Charlotte Fay's cousin Percena (spelled Parcena in the Orlin work)
I knew Charlotte Ann married a Conkey, but that's all I found in the Foster Genealogy by Fredrick Clifton Pierce, which takes us back past the Conqueror. Interestingly, the book was printed by the Conkey Press, Chicago, in 1899. Any connection?
I have traced Charlotte Ann's stepmother Julia Gay Foster back the the 1630's but I haven't found any blood link to Louis Reed Foster. It wouldn't surprise me if there were one.
Hope this helps, and I'm glad to put Mr. Conkey's name on our tree.

Lived in both New York and Florida at various times.
Had two sisters Anne and Rosemary, who are both older siblings.

We are hoping for any information, either forwards or backwards, and any relatives.
FAY - WATROUS - CONKLIN Families Connection

FAY-WATROUS-CONKLIN Families Connection

I am researching the possible FAY - WATROUS (Watros) connection in the early 1800s in the Tioga County, New York area. This may be a long-shot but uses the naming conventions of the time. My GGGF Walter Conklin married Rosetta Watrous (Watros) about 1815 in Owego, NY. Their first son Albert Conklin named his sons Henry Watrous Conklin and Paul Fay Conklin. This may be honoring his mother's family name (Watrous) and his grandmother's family name (Fay). That would place Walter Conklin and Rosetta in the Owego, New York area around 1830-35, both having been born about 1816. My assumption would place the WATROUS and FAY families nearby in that area. There may also be a Connecticut connection. Anyone with knowledge of these families with close ties during this time please let me know the details.

Hi Sarena

Moses Fay was married to Eunice West, the daughter of Ichabod West. Ichabod West was the son of Thomas West and Anna Niles West. I am decended from another son of Thomas and Anna West.

Moses Fay and Eunice West were both born in Dunham, Lower Canada. Both the Ichabod West Family and the Alvah Fay family appear on the 1852 Canadian census on Dunham. Both families came to the United states in the 1850's. They traveled through Wisconsin to settle in Waseca County, Minnesota. The 1860 census for Waseca County is three pages long and half of the residents are either West or Fay.

II am attempting to document all of the people desended from my ancestors and have spent the last few days "playing" in the Fay family records.

Hope this some help!

Dianne

Re: Fay's of Loughgall, County Armagh

I too have had no luck tracing my grandfather (known as John) Patrick John Fay's family. He was b.March 1924 in Loughgall, son of Annie Mcgowan and .... Fay. However that is all I know as he came to England in 1947/8 and had no contact with his family since. My dad seems to think he was one of 9, one of whom may have been called Denise who emigrated to canada. The surname does not appear to be that common in the area, but there have been changes to the spelling and can be found as Fahey, Faye. Good luck, I hope you find a link somewhere!
