Hi Kris,

I found Edward's name on a death index at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison:

Wisconsin Deaths Index: Deaths 1959-1967; 1969-1979, fiche 08:

036782 [certificate number] Fastner Edward A 15 Dec 65 [death date] Dane [county] 71 [age] M [male] 1

The Vital Statistics office in Dane County (in Madison, Wisconsin) would have the death record, as would the State of Wisconsin.

Let me know if you'd like a copy of his name on the index.

~Debbie

Somewhere in the past we certainly have common ancestors.
My grandfather Stjepan (Stephan) Fastner was married to my grandmother Maria Dym in Drvar (Bosnia, then Austria-Hungary), somewhere arond 1918. He originated from Sudetenland Winterberg (if I am not mistaken today's Zelezna Gora in the Czech Republic). He was born somewhere around 1880, worked in Drvar in the timber manufacturing firm SIPAD, and died during the second world war in Slavonia (today's Croatia). Does anybody have some more info on possible family connections ?

Debbie,

I don't have specific information as to where Edward's parents are from. A family tree I found has Austria listed but the census records show Germany. The Wudi family was from Ferchenheid, Bohemia. I did find more information as to who Edwards parents were. Wilheim Fastner (5/28/1856 -May 1919?) and Adolphina (Poss. Matschina) (9/29/1858-June 1933) They came to the US in 1892-1893

Siblings (per Census) are Thriesa (Sp? - census is unclear), Anna, William, Emma, Fred, John, Rose, Margaret. Adolphina is listed as having 14 children 12 living in 1910.

Here is Edward's obit. from 1965
Chicago Tribune (IL) - December 18, 1965
The Rev. Edward A. Fastner
Deceased Name: Rev. Edward A. Fastner
Mass for the Rev. Edward A. Fastner, 71, of Edgerton, Wis., formerly of Chicago, was said yesterday in the chapel at St. Joseph's college in Edgerton, where he had lived since June. He died Tuesday at the college. A redemptorist missionary, he worked at parish missions thruout the United States. He also had been pastor of St. Michael's and St. Alphonsus' Catholic parishes in Chicago.

My grandmother is trying to get more information on Edward.

If you happen to find any information on this family please share.

Kris
Maybe a Fastner family in Almena, Barron County, Wisconsin

I ran across a census that lists a "Fastner" family in Almena, Wisconsin. The census itself is hard to read and "Fastner" is not clearly written. Whether it's really Fastner or not, I don't know for sure. But here's the index info from Ancestry.com:

1930 United States Federal Census
Home in 1930: Almena, Barron, Wisconsin
Age: 72
Estimated birth year: abt 1858
Birthplace: Iowa
Relation to Head of House: Head

Household Members:
Name Age
Joseph L Fastner 72
Alice Fastner 43
Clarence P Fastner 17
Clifford J Fastner 12
Augusta Buchwald 72 (mother-in-law)

Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Almena, Barron, Wisconsin; Roll: 2560; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 1; Image: 1020.0.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/yrouv5

Edward A. Fastner

Kris,

Do you know any names of siblings for Edward A. Fastner?

In which town in Wisconsin did he die? Did he live in Almena, WI?

In which towns was he a priest?

I'm interested in the document you have that shows Edward's parents were from Austria. You probably know that Austria in the old days was known as the Austrian Empire and was made up of many other countries and states (such as Moravia, Bohemia, Silesia, Salzburg, Bukovina, Hungary, Tyrol).

My Fastner ancestors are from "Austria" but specifically they were from Bohemia (now called Czech Republic). A group of Fastners from Bohemia immigrated to Bukovina, then to USA - eventually settling in Wisconsin. Some settled in Minnesota, but I don't know if this group went to Bukovina before leaving Bohemia.

Though I can't help you with your request for how Edward connects to the Wudi family, I am interested in any Fastner names you may have.

Debbie
Wenzel (Wenzerl) Fastner & Apollonia Sitter (Sittner) descendants

A correction/update:

Apollonia Sitter/Sittner may have been born in 1770 in Ferchenhaid, Kreis Winterberg (Vimperk), Bohemia; or 24 Feb 1774 in Freiung, Kreis Winterberg, Bohemia.

Wenzel (Wenzerl) Fastner may have been born in 1768; or 22 Sep 1774 at Seehäuser, Bohemia (Czech Republic).

Wenzel and Apollonia were married 21 Nov 1791 in Neugebäu, Kreis Winterberg, Böhmen/Bohemia; or Nov. 21, 1797. [German handwritten "1"s look similar to English "7"s]

The parents of Apollonia were Josef Sittner and Katharina.
The parents of Wenzel were Lorenz Fastner.

Unfortunately, I have no official documents to prove the names, dates or places.

Edward A. Fastner

Edward A. Fastner was born 1/7/1894 in St. Paul, MN and died in Wisconsin 1965. Edward was a priest. The information I have shows that his parents were born in Austria but I have no further information on them. "Father Ed" is listed as cousin on Maria Wudi Hammerschmidt's obituary. Maria had sibilings: Fritz(Fred), Ida Schmuck, Emma Kufner and Hannah Legatzke. (My grandmother is Ida's granddaughter).

If anyone has any information on how Edward connects to the Wudi's I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Kris

Re: Fastner family

I want to thank you for the information you have furnish me and with that what Andreas had listed really filled in that part of my family tree.

There is one interesting fact about Apolonia Sitter. In the archives records from Trebon that I have:

birth record:

Johann Sitter (unchelich - illegitimate) 26 Mai 1796

It does not list the father.

So, one can only assume Wentzl Fastner is the father since he married Apolonia on 21 November 1797 and they had other children. It was not always a practice to go back to the records and correct them when the father stepped forward and said he was the father. Therefore, Sitter instead of Fastner came down the family line in my family tree.

I was send from Erich Nirschl in German a sheet with
"Basic genealogical vocabulary - English-German-Czech) I see there is a web address on the sheet. I haven't tried it, but it might be of some help to you if you are able to open it up. Here is the web address:

http://www.slovnik.cz

Philip
Hi Philip,

Thanks for the info from the archives. I didn't have Johann Sitter in my database yet. I posted a descendant list in another topic here in the Fastner message board. It's kind of hard to follow it, the way it shows up in the message, so I hope you can figure it out.

For Ignaz Fastner, I have a birth date of Jan. 20, 1816. He was married to Anna Müller. So yes, the time between the births of Ignaz and Johann (1796) is 20 years - I wonder if the dates for Ignaz are correct. I don't have Ignaz birth/baptism info from the archive.

Andreas' information in his post dated June 28 originates from research by Alois Häusl. I have 2 birth dates for Wenzerl Fastner - 1768 and Sept. 22, 1774 - and no definite sources.

The link worked today for your website and I found my way around - interesting information!

I can read German if it's fairly simple, but not Czech.

Thanks for mentioning the Bukovina Society's website. I found a lot of my ancestors on the trees there.

Debbie
Hi Debbie,

You had mentioned in your earlier posting that your Fastner ancesters migrated to Bukovina living there for some years before migrating to America.

You might be aware of this internet site for The Bukovina Society of the Americas. You might be able to track some information thru them. Here is the URL in case you do not have it:

http://www.bukovinasociety.org

They really have a lot of interesting info to download. It does list a colony in Yuma County, Colorado of those that came over.

Boy, both your and Andreas information just fell right in place in my family tree. Good luck on your search.

Phil Nirschl

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for your reply and interesting information. I did make a mistake reading the postings. When I read the one from Andreas, I was thinking that I was still reading your first posting.

I have a German friend, Erich Nirschl (Munich) [no relative] that helped me track down the information I have on Sitter/Fastner. He wrote to the various offices to gather the information that I have. I received certified copies typed in German and Czech. Since I am unable to put the accent marks on the Czech, I will give you the info without the accents. Info from: CR - STATNI OBLASTNI ARCHIV 379 11 TREBON
PhDr. Vaclav Rames reditel Statniho oblastniho archivu

Vyrizuje: PhDr. Marie Safarova
Tel: 384 721 346,511
Fax: 384 722 379
email: soatb@tiscali.cz

Snatek (mariage) Vaclay Fasner (Fastner) a Apolonia Sitter:
Tag, Monat und Jahr der Trauung: 21 November 1797
Braeutigam: (Wentzl Fasner aus Neumichlhuetten
Alter: 21 Jahre
Stand: ledig
Braut: Apolonia Sitterin, des Joseph Sitter and
Katharina, Mutter eheliche Tochter
Haeuslers aus der Neumichlhuetten,
Winterberger Herrschaft
Alter: 21 Jahre
Stand: ledig

Matrika oddanych rimsko-katolickeho farniho uradu Novy Svet, svazek 7, 1788-1846, strana 112, por.c.neuvedeno.

To avoid the long print out, in the birth records
Narozeni (birth) Johann Sitter
born 26 Mai 1796
Mutter: Apolonia Sitterin (no father listed)

It is assumed that Wentzl Fastner was the father, as she married him the next year. Interesting as Johann's family name was not changed from Sitter to Fastner. So, the name Sitter was carried down the line into my family line, instead of Fastner.

According to Andreas information in his posting, Wenzel and Apolonia had another son, Ignatz born 20 years later. ????
Andreas year dates for Wenzl and Apolonia did not match what I received from the Archives. In the old writings, it is tough to decide if it is a 1 or a 7.

Wentzl and Apolonia are my great, great, great grandparents.

Some other family names that I received information on were: Haselberger, Koschka and Bredl.

The decendants of Fastner/Sitter (Ignatz Sitter and 3 children migrated across the border to the Grafenau area of Bavaria and later to America. Ignatz's daughter, Amelia was my grandmother Nirschl.

I don't believe I will be doing any research in Bohemia. Just interested in seeing that general area where the Faster and Sitter lived.

When you try to get my family tree on the internet, you might try typing the URL in this way:

http://www.nirschl.us

I just did it and it worked fine. Once you click on the little green tree, it take a little time to open, so wait about a minute or two.

Thanks again for your information. Sounds like you had a fantistic trip over there. You found a lot of Fastners. I found the same when investigating the Nirschl name just across the border in Bavaria. Found quite a few and unable to apply all to my family line. It sure was great and I have many Nirschl fiends in Bavaria, realated to some and some not. I did most of my research in the 1960s and early 1970s when working in Germany.

Do you read and write Czech and/or German? I used to be pretty good in German, but lack practice and have forgotten most.

You sure are welcome to use my email address, if it is simplier. philip2u@aol.com

Have a great day.

Hi Philip,

I can't get your website to open up today. I'll try again later.

In my database, I have a Wenzel Fastner married to Apollonia Sittner/Sitter on Nov. 21, 1791 or 1797 in Neugebäu, Kreis Winterberg, Böhmen/Bohemia. But I don't have this Fastner family connected to mine yet. I haven't found a common relative. But they are from the same town as my Fastner family.

My Fastners (Wenzel Fastner and siblings, their parents Johann Fastner & Magdalena Hany) immigrated from Neugebäu to Bukovina between 1841-1844. In 1887 they immigrated to America. I don't know if the Fastner/Sitter family also went to Bukovina - I'm assuming they didn't, but I'm not sure because I have no death dates for them.

Did you do research at the archive in Trebon, Czech Republic? That's where we found records for my Fastner family from Neugebäu.

In April 1999, I was in Borová Lada (German name Ferchenhaid), then biked to the top of the large hill on a paved road which later turned into a bumpy, non-paved road. We had to push our bikes through some snow on a path to Fürstenhut (an extinct town). Cars are not allowed to drive there, you need to walk or bike. The Czech name for Fürstenhut is Knizeci Plane. Biking took one hour.

At the top of the mountain was Fürstenhut which had no houses and no church remaining (destroyed in WWII).

There is a cemetery and a cross marking the site of the church, and a large WW II war memorial with a Fastner name. The cemetery has one "Familie Fastner" tombstone with no other names or dates. Buried here is a young man who died in Prague in a factory accident - he was an uncle of Herbert Fastner.

The WW II memorial lists Franz Fastner, 20 J (years).

You can also get to Fürstenhut by way of Bučina (Buchwald).

From the archive at Trebon, I have these notes referring to Ferchenhaid:

****************************************

Neugebäu (Novy Svet) - House number 5
Children of Franz Fastner* & Juliana Selner:
Baptism Book 2

Sept. 20, 1829	Alexander Fastner	page 43
Dec. 6, 1830	Joanna Fastner	page 45
April 7, 1833	Beatrix Fastner	page 49
Juli 2, 1835	Josef Fastner page 52
Mai 11, 1837	Josef Nep.
Hi Debbie,
I happened across your site for the family Fastner. I have complete a very complete family tree and I see where Fastner fell into my family tree by being married to a Sitter. I have my family tree on line. You can pull it up by... www.nirschl.us .... when it opens click on the little green tree in the square. You can navigate the Sitter name back in forth by clicking on the name to the right side of the screen. I am flying to Germany the first of August and will probably drive to Borova Lada (Ferchenhaid) Czech Republic. Looks like we are very distant cousins. The Nirschls came from just across the border in Bavaria. The Sitters moved into this area from CR. Then move to Pennsylvania. I am 75 years old. Living in State of Washington. Born in Minnesota. Worked in Germany 3 times and did a lot of research there. I would like to hear from you, hopefully before I leave for Germany. Philip Nirschl

1892 Wenzel Fastner - Naturalization record, Yuma County, Colorado

I also posted this query in the Yuma, Colorado, message board:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.col...

I just received naturalization records from the Yuma County Courthouse in Wray, Colorado for my great-great-grandfather, Wenzel Fastner. I'm not sure of the signature of the Judge/Clerk of County Court, and one other word which I've marked with question marks. I'm also wondering what "ATT" means in address/city section of the 1940 document.

Wenzel Fastner and his family were immigrants from Bukovina in 1887. They lived in the Yuma area for a short time, then went back to Wisconsin (living in Milwaukee and Marathon Counties).

A child, William J. Fastner, was baptized at "Brighton Mission church" - Baptismal date: May 19, 1894. Parents: Wenzel Fastner & Catherine Niga. William's baptism was the last of 71 baptisms listed in the Brighton, CO, records (from 1887 to 1894). I'm trying to find a copy of this baptism record but do not know where the Brighton mission church records are kept. I also do not know if there would be a birth record filed with the State of Colorado.

I have more information about the Fastner family on my website: http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/home

Transcript of the original document:

United States of America.
State of Colorado,
_______ County,

I, Wenzel Fastner do solemnly declare on oath before L.

My ancestors are Wenzel Fastner (1841-1905) and Catherine Niga (1846-1941).

Parents of Wenzel are Johann Fastner and Magdalena Hany. The Fastner family emigrated from Neugebäu, Kreis Winterberg, Bohemia to Solka, Bukovina, sometime around 1848 or earlier.

They lived in Solka (or Glitt), Bukovina from at least 1848 to 1887.

On June 18, 1887, they immigrated to America, settling in Wisconsin (with a short stay in Yuma, Colorado).

In Wisconsin, they lived in Milwaukee (Milwaukee County), and near Athens (Marathon County) in Johnson Township (near Milan).

For more information, please see my website:
http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/home

Places they lived: http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/fastner-placestheylived

I'd like to hear from other Fastner researchers :)

~Debbie

Hi my surename is Fastner and my family comes from Neugebäu.
The first Fastner are from Glöcklberg and born 1741 and his name was Lorenz.
Here anything about Fastner but in german.

Sie hatten mehrere Kinder, u.a.:
1. Ignatz, geb.
