GRIEF DROVE HER MAD

Woman Attempts to Take Her Own Life - Saved by Son

Guthrie: After tying a rope which was attached to a mule around her neck, Mrs. Harriet Farley, living near Alva, frightened the animal to make him run. Before she was injured her 11 year old son cut the rope with a knife, saving his mother's life. Her mind has been weak since the death of her husband, almost a year ago, and the recent announcement of her father's death drove her insane. Driving into the open prairie, five miles from a habitation she undressed all her children, although the weather was bitter cold, and compelled them to lie down in buffalo grass for protection. The children range in age from 9 months to 11 years. After this she attempted her own death in the manner described. After rescuing his mother, the son persuaded her to dress the children, and finally brought them to the home of a neighbor. She has been adjudged insane and ordered committed to the asylum.
