Mary was my mother as well as my twin brother Jerry. I am the only surviving sibling born to her. I knew GB was born Masterson and changed to Gilliam. I do not have any info on Masterson. I was told Mary left Gilliam because he was mean and beat her..a lot. I do not believe Mary and Thacker were ever married and she died shortly after my twin and I were born. Thacker married again thirty days after my mothers death. There was a daughter born five years later from that union. I found her through this web site about ten years ago and we remain close. I also found an older brother from Thacker's first wife born in1930. Thacker never stuck around after there were children born. I feel he probably has other children from various unions around the country and I would like to find them somehow. I am sorry I do not have any info to help you with your search.

my name is Loretta jeane Zimmerman. I am great granddaughter to George baker Farries and Laura Cummings. their daughter Mary was my great grandmother, her son George was my grandfather and his son Donald is my father. I have done some research and as far as I can tell Mary was married to Masterson so she could leave home. she left Masterson for Gilliam because she was just a wanderer. she left Gilliam for Thacker for the same reason. though so far as I know she never divorced Gilliam when she went to thacker. haven't found records anyway. don't hate though, some love just works that way. she seems to have been like her dad a little, from what I can tell anyway. I would like to know more about the masterson's though. my grandpa was born a masterson but changed his name to Gilliam after war. don't know much about masterson and have and uncle that looks like bat masterson and am interested to see that side of family.

Re: Faries families of DE

Hello
I have seen an ancestor reported as James Faries (Pencader Hundred, New Castle Co., DE) and after that Faris. One son is reported as Ferris.

Check out my posting on the Faris message Board re James Faris/Faries who married 1st. Elizabeth Moody and had 7 children, the first, Joseph Faris, b. 1794 moved to Fleming County, KY. James married 2nd Martha Anne Boyd and had two sons in 1822. He died in 1826.

Research has shown that he was the son of William Faris who served in the Delaware militia. Thus I was able to submit my father's application for the SAR and he was made a member.

I am descended from one of the last sons of James and Martha Ann who settled in Philadelphia.

The other son of James and Martha Ann, Levi, died in 1865 while serving with the 13th PA Cavalry. His widow and four children migrated to Butte Co CA in 1876.

Still hoping to find out if William was the immigrant ancestor and if so, when he came and from where.

Lorraine Faris
Maryland

Dear Sir,
I'm not related to the Faries family but I know quite a bit about them. I parsonally knew Julius in East St. Louis, and i knew his daughter Ruby Call, wife of Arthur Call and all their kids. I grew up in East St. Louis and went ot church with the Call family. My folks knew the Faries family and the Call family from Broughton, Illinos and because I spent much of my life in and around Broughton and Walpole, Illinois I knew a lot of people around there. I knew the Richarson family in Broughton and Julius wife was a Richardson. One of the Richardson girls, born around 1900 was Minnie. Minnie married Scrubb Gaines and their son Sam is a well known figure around McLeansboro, IL. McLeansboro is the county seat of hamilton County. I think Roscoe's wife was a Grable from Walpole. My mom was from Walpole and Dad was from Broughton. I think Dad and Roscoe were about the same age. since you note was over ten years ago you may not get this note from me. However, if you do and wish to discuss this at more depth, feel free to contact me at twogunners@verizon.net. sincerely, Ralph W.

Hi Melissa, I have that Robert Alexander Faries was born in Sardis, Mississippi, married in Alabama, and died, as you said, in Itasca.

Robert Alexander Faries >> William Alexander (b.1828 Tennessee) >> Robert Arthur (b.ABT 1790 South Carolina) >> Robert Esq (b.1733 County Antrim, Ireland) >> Alexander James Faries (b.1698 County Antrim, Ireland).

Would you have confirmation on Robert Alexander being born in 1851? And the date on which he and Elizabeth were married? There's a little conflicting info with those two dates:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?su...

Thanks,
Wesley

Re: Moses Templeton Faries parents?

Thanks Dan for this info, this is great details that I didn't have! One of the main reasons I was causing myself confusion was I was relying too much on posts from earlier years that had misinformation, although they swore by it. I've learned my lesson and now am not so eager to automatically run with info I come across.

Thank you for the mention of my website(s), I enjoy sharing my online "notebook" I've compiled over the years with others, and to introduce extended family members to each other with my Facebook pages. I wish I had more time to spend on it. :-)

Although I mainly focus on my direct lineage I do enjoy branching out to other Faries lines; for enjoyment and to help others. One I've been researching for a few months now is Alexander and Mary Forbes. I know they were confused early on with Alexander and Jennet James; I currently have Alex(b1774)/Mary Forbes as the ancestor of the Faries Funeral Home brothers?

I have the direct line:
Alexander(b1774 m.Mary Forbes) > Alexander H(b1807) > William Alexander(b.1846) > Harvey Wilkens(b1878) > Joseph Wells(b1903) > Wells "Lex" Alexander(b1926) > etc

I haven't worked much on Alexander H on down due to I'm mainly interested in who the parents of Alexander(1774) were, and if his lineage dates back to the Robert (b1658) Pencader Hundred family.

There for a while I had:
Robert Sr (b1658) > William (b1725) > Samuel (b1746) > Alexander (b1774)

But that didn't seem to be panning out; I have William's (1725 m.Jane Steele) children as Jacob Sr, Samuel, Margaret. As I was reading up on Robert Sr (1658) my head started to hurt from all the confusion so I'm taking a break from his line.

Would you by chance know if the Alexander/Mary Forbes parents were worked out?

I have Alexander(b1740 m.Jennet James) being the brother to my ancestor Robert Esq, and their children as:
John, Thomas, James, Mary, Ann, William, Samuel, Jannette/Jennet, Alexander Jr, Jesse.

Thank you again for replying with the extensive notes! I've copied them down to go back over this weekend,
Wesley
Me (Texas) >> Floron Clayton Jr (b.1942 Texas) >> Floron Clayton Sr (b.1917 Texas) >> Allen Knight (b.1890 Mississippi) >> Green C (b.1854 Mississippi) >> Benjamin H (b.1824 Illinois) >> Robert Arthur (b.1790 York Co., South Carolina) >> Robert "Esquire" (b.1733 County Antrim, Ireland) >> Alexander James Faries (b.1698 County Antrim, Ireland)

Re: Moses Templeton Faries parents?

Wesley,

I've seen your Faries site online. It is good to get
folks interested in their roots. Keep it up.

I've been focusing almost entirely on Faries research
for over ten years. Have found that if you focus on
one family name it is possible to accomplish much more
than otherwise.

Moses & Mary Faries were Moses T.'s parents.

Moses Faries, died 1812 Illinois Territory, and his wife Mary (maiden name unknown - possibly Miller?) had three
sons and one daughter:
John B.
Robert Miller
Moses Templeton
and
Jane Hannah Faries.

The "Edward T. Farris" you hear about was a much later person in a family related to the above only by marriage.
Edward Theodore Faris 1819-1904 was born in York County,
South Carolina, and lived here all his life. E.T. Faris
married (1) Margaret Quinn; (2) Sarah Ann Faries. Sarah
Ann was a daughter of Robert Miller Faries (see below).
Edward T. Faris' father Samuel W. Faris was born in
1785 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

A Mr. Hart arbitrarily "placed" every York Co., SC,
Faris-Farris-Faries-Faires family into the same family.

We were not all the same family - at least not on this
side of the Atlantic Ocean. Some Farises came down
from Delaware, Pennsylvania, & Maryland (yours & mine), some from Virginia, some came directly to South
Carolina from Ireland. The spelling of the family name
has varied over time. My own lines were Faries in
Delaware and Maryland in the mid-to-late 1700's and in
the Carolinas in the 1820's Faires was often used. Then
varied with Farris and Faris. My own line has used FARIS
since the 1870's, but I have cousins in the county who
are siblings and each used a different spelling - in
the same immediate family.

The late Joe Hart, York, SC, is responsible for confusing
so many Faries researchers with a little sketch on Faris he put together in the 1960's. Hart did quick research on a
number of York County, South Carolina, families for a hobby.
His family "histories" were not so helpful. At one point,
Hart lists Samuel W. and Edward T. as brothers, but they
are proved by Samuel W.'s estate records as father and son.
Hart was also responsible for misidentifying two other
supposed Irishmen at the head of the whole Faris family
tree: a John and a James. But those two also were not a
father and a son. Nor did the John and James that Hart
placed together belong to the same family. Hart's "John"
was John Faries (died 1815 in York Co., SC) and was a
son of my Alexander Faries. Hart's "James" was a fellow
who died in Charlotte, NC, shortly after 1800 and was a
separate family in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Hart lists my
"John" as father of the fellow (Alexander) who was in
fact, John's father. Probably because John died in 1815
and Alexander died in 1824. Some online folks cannot de-
cide between the Hart version and the real Faries genea-
logy, so they call my Alexander as "Alexander James".

The only sources Hart ever listed were gravestones.
Visiting and recording cemeteries was his most valuable service to local genealogy. He also compiled some
volumes of newspaper marriage and death notices that
are useful.

The family Bible record does not state that Moses was
father of this family. Nor does it mention his wife
Mary. There was a family story about Moses's death in
Illinois and his widow's return to Carolina with their
children. The widow appears only once in South Carolina
records for York District, SC. and that is in the 1820
federal census. Several generations are included in
the Bible record.

Here is the family record from the Moses Templeton
Faries family Bible.

[Info in brackets added by me (DT), but not in the
record.]
Family Record
BIRTHS

Moses T.
Looking for Levi Faris 1813-?

Trying to trace Levi Faris. Born about 1813-1820 to James Faris and probably Elizabeth Moody of Pencader Hundred, Newcastle County, Delaware. He is found in Philadelphia, PA in the 1850 census with his wife, Hannah, and daughter Martha Anne and is reported to be a shoemaker/cordwainer. In 1860 he is also found in Philadelphia with his wife, Anna (Hannah?), and children: Martha A. b. 1848, Margaret J, b. 1854, Laura b. 1857, Leo and George W. b. 1859. I found that George W. died 27 Nov 1861.
I cannot find any of these folks after the 1860 census.

Levi’s brother James remained in Philadelphia, his brother Joseph had already moved to Kentucky and I presume the rest of his siblings remained in Delaware.

Anyone with information about this family, please contact me.

Thanks

Lorraine
You could look up what township Gibson is in, and search the census records for that township, which may include actually viewing every page in case of errors in transcription.
You could also look in land, will & court records: http://search.ancestry.com/search/Default.aspx?cat=36
Maps, atlases & gazetteers, for plat maps with land ownership:
http://search.ancestry.com/search/Default.aspx?cat=44
Don't discount google or other search engines, either, which sometimes turn up gems.

I have the second line you mention starting with Edward T. Faries. The only reference I have seen states that he was born in Ireland as was Moses. Moses T. was born in York Co. SC and is buried in the Enon Church Yard there with at least one of his wives, as are several generations of the family.

I am descended of George Templeton's younger brother William Caldwell.

Hope this helps.

Mike

This was my mother's father. My mother was Patricia M. Faries; her brother was Maynard Faries. All came from Barton, Gibson Country, Indiana. Onie Faries' father was Hugh. I know that my grandfather was in WWI. I don't know where he returned or when; I know that during the war he drove for a general all around France. I have many pictures showing places both known to most and those not so well known of war-time France. Indeed, great historical pictures. Does anyone have any information to add to my grandfather or anyone else in this family?
