Re: Fairbairn Families Michigan & Southwestern Ontario

In correction to an old posting by me - John Fairbairn and his wife Janet Lyal() did not leave Scotland but remained in Leitholm Eccles where they raised their family. The brothers who came to North America were Thomas Fairbairn who married Mary Middlemiss (Middlemas) the aunt, James who married Margery (Margory) Rose and Robert Fairbairn who married Helen Milne. A sister Isabelle Fairbairn (Isobel Fairborn) married whaling ship captain Alexander Luke - they did not leave Scotland but all of their children did.

Thomas Fairbairn and Elspeth (Eppy) Wood died in and are buried in Fogo Churchyard. There is a comprehensive biography on their family. This biography in its entirety is the work of Grace Fairbairn Jenking the d/o George Fairbairn who is the son of George Milne Fairbairn, the youngest in the family of Robert Fairbairn and Helen Milne, George Milne was the only child not born in Scotland but rather in Wayne Co. Michigan.

Which leads to my adding a personal comment. I have noticed lately that many people are downloading trees and using information provided and not giving credit to the source. It is a convention that in all instances in genealogy the source should be credited whether it be in the body of their research or at the end.

Because this is becoming the common practice or the norm as of late, I have been very reluctant to pass along my information which is being misused. In my endeavours I have always tried to credit the source and have as a matter of fact given credit within my own personal tree. Do hope that any who are reading this posting will reconsider if they are not doing so now.

Norma Heath (Niven) Chantler
FAIRBAIRN, Robert & MILNE, Helen

Robert Fairbairn born in Fogo Berwickshire, married Helen Milne. Robert the son of Thomas Fairbairn and Elspeth (Eppy) Wood came to North America in 1836. He purchased land in Essex County Ontario from Clergy Reserves in 1836.

As well as Robert, his two brothers: Thomas who married Mary Middlemiss (Middlemas) the aunt; and James who married Margory (Margery Rose). The brother who is named John remained in Scotland (Leitholm) and his wife was JANET LYAL(L). I have noticed blogs who have in error named as his wife Margery Rose who is the wife of his brother James.

Other confusion arises as there are two in the same family who have married women named Mary Middlemiss (Middlemas).

1) Thomas Fairbairn, son of Thomas Fairbairn and Elspeth Wood who married Mary Middlemiss the aunt.

2) Thomas Fairbairn, son of Robert Fairbairn and Helen Milne who married Mary Middlemiss the niece.

Just posting this thread in the event it may help clear any misconceptions on the Fairbairn family of Essex County and Michigan.

The marriage record for Thomas and Janet may be obtained from Scottish OPR records.

Norma Heath (Niven) Chantler
gr. gr. granddaughter of Christiana Fairbairn
who is daughter of Robert Fairbairn & Helen Milne

Her Husbands family left Baillieston, Glasgow to make a new life in USA. My grandmother was her father-in-laws sister andshe remained in Scotland. Could you contact her for me please?
Re: FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project update

Time I posted another update for the DNA project.
We now have 16 participants, and are still waiting on two results to get through processing, and one kit to make it back to the lab.
All bar two of those with some results already are looking related, albeit we don't know how for most of them.

The project HAS however proven that the family of Robert, miller of Vegreville, Alberta, whose parents were Archibald and Jane (BLAKEY) FAIRBAIRN, (emigrated from Northumberland in the early 1850s), does look extremely likely to belong to the family of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT) FAIRBAIRN.
http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/p1455.htm

Also that you cannot believe everything you read on marriage and death certificates, showing a good match between a descendant of John A FAIRBAIRN Snr (marr. Sarah DAUGHTERTY) of Stillwater, and a descendant of William, the brother of the David that now looks like John's father. (still with me? ).

Check out the Wanted! page
http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/spwantedfairbairns
for lines particularly seeking a representative.
However, all/any male FAIRBAIRNs from a line of father/son FAIRBAIRNs welcome to join and see where they might "fit".

Regards
Lorna
Project Admin Fairbairn Surname DNA Project
http://fairbairndna.blogspot.com

Robert Fairbairn dies 1908 WA

The Mason County Journal of Friday, April 24, 1908
Shelton, Mason, Washington

ROBERT FAIRBAIRN DROPS DEAD

Announcement of the sudden death of Robert Fairbairn came as a surprise to the community on Wednesday afternoon, although to several friends he had complained of a pain in his side during the forenoon. He was seen to fall in the rear of his saloon and those near rushed to his assistance, but found that his heart had ceased beating and life was gone. The remains were taken to the morgue, but no inquest was held as the fact of his dying a natural death was unquestioned. Deceased was a member of Union City Masonic Lodge and of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Port Gamble, both of which were notified of his death. The funeral will take place from the Commercial hotel on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, under auspices of the Masonic lodges of Union City and Shelton, and joined by Odd Fellows. The remains will be buried in the Shelton Masonic Cemetery.

Robert Fairbairn was one of the older pioneers of this region, having come to Hood Canal in a sailing vessel about 1865. From the time of his coming until about twelve years ago deceased was engaged in logging along the shores of the Canal and owned a farm near Clifton. Since coming to Shelton he has engaged in the saloon business; always observing the law and conducting his business in as quiet and unobstrusive manner as possible, following his own characteristics. He served both as County Commissioner and as Assessor in early nineties, but took little interest in political or public affairs. He leaves a wide circle of friends, especially among the older residents of Mason County, and those with whom he was associated,. The funeral promises to be largely attended from Canal points.

Deceased was about 67 years old and a native of New York. His family moved to Canada many years ago, and his mother died some fifteen years ago. He has no relatives in this section, and it is understood to be his wish that his estate, about $15,000 accumulated during the past fifteen years, is to go to the Masonic Grand Lodge.

Thank you for your response. I have just done some more extensive research into this Lockhart family in order to follow up. I had been given some information from a local researcher who had used local church records, & I can tell you that your Fairbairn/Lockhart connection is not with the Alexander, b. 1787, son of John L. & Margaret Story. This Alexander disappears from the records. However, as you know John Lockhart married Jane Paisley in 1788. He then had a son Robert, b. 1802, who married Isabella. It is their daughter Margaret who married Robert Fairbairn in 1856. You can find the details on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl & then order the actual document. This researcher has also transcribed some Memorial Inscriptions & sent me these details for you:their MI at Arthuret:
In memory of John son of Thomas and Catharine FAIRBAIRN - - Croft - - who died - - January 1838 aged - - . Also of Jane their daughter who died July 22nd 1840 aged 25 years. Also of Margaret their daughter who died January 6th 1846 aged 21 years. Also the above Thomas FAIRBAIRN who died October 26th 1870 aged 81 years. Also the above Catharine FAIRBAIRN who died June 1st 1876 aged 89 years. Also Robert their son who died at Roadend Croft March 24th 1885 aged 72 years. Also John son of the above Robert & Margaret FAIRBAIRN who died Oct 16th 1861 aged 10 months. Also William their son who died in infancy. Also Robert their son who died at Path April 8th 1889 aged
21 years. Also Thomas FAIRBAIRN son of the above Thomas and Catherine FAIRBAIRN who died in London Oct 28th 1900 in his 70th year. Also Margaret wife of Robert FAIRBAIRN who died at Peth June 23rd 1922 aged 91 years.

I hope that this is helpful to you in your research. You can use the FreeBMD site to search for other Fairbairn events and then order up the documents for the full details. Good luck. And thank you for trying to help me with my DNA project. I may eventually use a male descendant of this Robert Lockhart line.

Elayne

I have a picture of Margarette Fairbairn taken about 1914. She is with my grandmother, Mildred Stutz. I would love to find someone from the Fairbairn family to share the picture with. Margarette would have been born about 1898 to Thomas and lillian. Her siblings were Pearl, Elmer, Esther, Edward, Richard, James, May, John and Robert.

Hi, I have found an article of Capt. W.E. Fairairn. The article tells about him as an Assistant Commissioner of the Shanghai Municipal Police beween 1927 and 1940. He taught hand-to-hand combat to the U.S. Marines during this period and to the British Commandos during WW2. If you use internet and look up Capt W.E. Fairbairn you will find that he also wrote a wook about combat and developing a "Fairairn" knife. The article was sumbitted by e-mail: david.cjolby@lhsc.on.ca Good luck.

Hi,
you don't indicate what country this is in, but I have noted an 1898 marriage in St Catherines, Lincoln Co, Ontario between a Thomas FAIRBURN and Lillian O WILSON.
The 1911 census shows them living in St Catherines, Lincoln Co, Ontario but shows their dtr as born 1899 USA, emigrating 1907.
The name of this dtr looks more like Edna or Jane to me though, than Margarette.
Thomas appears to belong to the Yorkshire line of FAIRBURNs, his parents being John Thomas FAIRBURN and Margaret Letitia Josephine MEAGHER (marr. 1874 Welland Co, Ontario).
Regards
Lorna
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

Re: FAIRBAIRNS - SACRAMENTO

On the off chance that you are still monitoring this board, and your email address is still active after all this time, I thought I'd post my findings to date on this family.
A real mix up.
The info you posted back in 2000 was from the Ontario marriage cert of John T FAIRBAIRN and Agnes HOUSTON.
Which clearly states his father as being a Wm. and Agnes.
There's no way I can turn that cert into his father being a John and mother Isabella.

BUT in a c 1905 biographical sketches I found on the web site of the Sacramento County
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ca/state1/biographies/jtfairbair...
it says that John's parents were a John FAIRBAIRN and Isabella BRACKEY, who emigrated to NY 1853, with John dying, presumably in Canada, in 1876.
It also states that John T was born in NY in Feb 1856 (his marriage cert and census data implies/states May 1853, NY).
And that he has step brothers Thomas and Peter in the lumber business in Sacramento Co, in 1905.
It has to be the same John T FAIRBAIRN, despite all the discrepancies as it gives his exact marriage date and wife as Agnes HOUSTON.
What I've found so far:
The migration, in 1850, of a family of John (28, gardener) & Isabella (26) FAIRBAIRN, with son John (5) , and an Isabella 52, presumably John's Mum.
The marriage in 1889 of a Robert who may be the Robert of Grey ONT, witness to John T and Agnes HOUSTON's marriage.
He married Jessie Ellen McKAY Jan 1889, Grey Twp, Huron Co, ONT.
1881 census: Grey, Huron Sth, ONT
Ellen FAIRBAIRN, widow with sons Robert, Thomas and Peter
This Robert being of an age to be the 1889 marriage above.
Parents given as John FAIRBAIRN and Helen TAYLOR
Marriage of John FAIRBAIRN and Isabella BROCKIE (Earlston, Berwick, 1843)
Birth of son John at Earlston, 1844.
Dth 1876 of a 51 yr old Scot John FAIRBAIRN, in Hastings Co, Ontario (Ellen was a widow in 1881 and John T's father supposedly died 1875 Ontario)
However, I have not yet found hide nor hair of Robert, Thomas and Peter after 1881 apart from Robert's marriage in Ontario.
Can anyone out there solve this mystery?
I'm not related, just curious.
Who knows, the dna project may be able to help!!
Regards
Lorna
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

An update.
It rather looks like Fred George and Harry might be this family in Leeds in 1901 (Potter Newton):
FAIRBURN: Fred 36 confectioner baker D employer, b Leeds, YKS; wife Agnes 36 b Sweden (British Subject); Harry 9, George H 8, both b Leeds, YKS; Cousin Mary E WELLS 22 unm b Leeds;
Where Fred and Agnes looks like 1889 marriage registered Bradford (Agnes HAGUE).
Following them back led me to a couple of options for Fred, at which point I decided to hope that someone out there recognised the family and could make the jump back further in time and northwards, (rather than my having to buy certs!) as they were all still firmly in Leeds, Bradford etc area.
One option was the son of a Thomas FAIRBURN and Mary Jane BAIRSTOW, married Halifax 1858.
Who were Fred George and Harry?

I've got a little puzzle.
A chap I was last in contact with back in 2000 claimed descent from a John FAIRBAIRN and Jean GRIFFIN, marr. 1663, Gordon BEW.
Son Robert marr. Alison SCLATER, 1690 Eildon and his son John marr. Margaret YOUNG 1740 Bowden, with banns also in Melrose.
As I am now rather more interested in Melrose FAIRBAIRNs than I was back then, I thought it was time to contact him again.
However, I left it a month too late as I've now had a brief chat with his widow, so I didn't feel like pushing her for too much information.
Back when John and I were in contact he had not sharedthe link between himself and presumably the John & Margaret (YOUNG) FAIRBAIRN couple above.
What she could tell me was that John's father was George, who had a brother Harry, and their father was Fred.
I have no more than that to go on.
Ring any bells with anyone?
I don't even know what sort of age John was, only that by his generation he spelt his name FAIRBURN, and lived in Surrey.
The move to the south may well have started back up in 1776 when John's son Robert married in Durham to Susanna STELLING.

Hope someone can help piece the family together, and fill in a couple of hundred years of history - AND find a rep. for the line in the dna project.
Regards
Lorna
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

As a result of this thread, I have done a bit of digging, and have included William Ewart's line in the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Wanted! pages.
http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/dcfairbairnrobertyoungeliza...
having found, thanks to Roger, the 1851 census entry that says Robert was born at Eckford.
Took a while to find, ancestry had indexed him as Facobaion, born Eclford, Robeburghshire.
Does anyone knows more about Robert's ancestry?

Regards
Lorna
Project Administrator FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

Roger, thanks for that, my interest level just went up a tad.
My lot were living Eckford around that time.
http://familytree.lornahen.com/spFAIRBAIRN.htm
The baptisms (Free Church, Morebattle records) of sons David (1800), John (1797) and James (1794) show Archibald and Alison as living in Grahamslaw, Eckford.
Mind you, I am trying to claim a Robert in Canada born around 1786 as belonging to this family, and his children were born around 1817 thru 1828 at which time he emigrated.

I did find a Robert and Betty in the 1851 census in Scotland but the children didn't quite match in age so I ruled him out (at the time I only had Elizabeth as the mother, not knowing George's father's name).
Check out the family of James FAIRBAIRN and Mary Bell THOMSON as potential relations (there's a link on the above page).
James was baptized Morebattle 1794 and by 1822 was living Eckford when they married, and they had a son Robert at Caverton Mill, Eckford in 1824 which would indicate a Robert somewhere in the family.
Don't suppose you've any direct line male descendants surnamed FAIRBAIRN still around in this family who would be interested in joining the Surname DNA project have you?
Discounts available until the end of December if you join via the project.
Happy to swap to private email, just click on my monicker above left to get contact details.

Regards,
Lorna
Waikanae, NZ
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/
http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/spwantedfairbairns.htm
Bob,
I've just resurrected my interest in this family as I've found several references to a relationship ("cousin" but not how) between Albert son of Henry and Anna, to John A FAIRBAIRN of Hoquiam.
I've separate references of John A FAIRBAIRN of Hoquiam as "cousin" to Angus U FAIRBAIRN, of Eatonville, son of David and Charity (WALKER) FAIRBAIRN.
Down the family of David and Charity, "cousins" married "cousins", Clarissa granddaughter of David and Charity, married her "cousin" Walter A FAIRBAIRN, son of William George & Carrie Augusta (McGREW) FAIRBAIRN.
This William George is the brother of the John A of Hoquiam who married Bella REYNOLDS
Back in 2006 I was in contact with the Joe you mention, but as of an hour ago, his email bounced, so I'm trying to find another one.
I've never managed to figure out how David's family and John's family are related, but would love to find out.
And as Joe's and your Albert works back to a Robert FAIRBARIN born 1818 in Sunderland, Durham, you are getting close to the Scottish Borders, and in name to the Roberts that are becoming of interest to me.
Love to hear from anyone with more info on these families, particularly from male FAIRBAIRN descendants on any of these lines who would like to help test out relationships by joining the FAIRBAIRN dna project.
Regards
Lorna
http://familytree.lornahen.com/spFAIRBAIRN.htm
Project administrator of the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project update

Hi folks,
If any of you are interested in how the assorted FAIRBAIRN families inter-relate, keep checking out the FAIRBAIRN dna project pages.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

We've just had a 6th test order, two others are in varying stages of processing.
The first 3 participants turned out to be related.
You don't have to be a dna participant to submit pedigrees for the Patriarchs page which is intended to show the assorted lines.
If thinking about getting tested, there are some heavy discounts available until the end of August.
Follow the Join Project link to make sure you get offered the discounted rates (no I don't get a cut, I just want to see how closely all these FAIRBAIRN families are related).
Personally, at the moment I'm trying to find descendants of the following families who may connect to mine, or I believe do, but would like more proof:
- Robert FAIRBAIRN and Kate SCOTT (emigrated abt 1828 to Ontario settled around Napanee, Richmond area) Descendants include (I think) William and Catherine (MORGAN) FAIRBAIRN.
- Archibald FAIRBAIRN and Jane BLAKEY, from Northumberland, whose descendants look like they may be the FAIRBAIRNs of
Vegreville, Alberta
- James FAIRBAIRN and Mabel/Mary Bel THOMSON (descendants include Robert FAIRBAIRN and Isabella HENDERSON, Archibald FAIRBAIRN & Fanny WAITE, James FAIRBAIRN and Elizabeth WRIGHT)

Regards
Lorna
Project Administrator, FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/
http://familytree.lornahen.com/spFAIRBAIRN.htm

Re: FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project update

Check out the DNA Project results pages for some interesting new updates.
Two more families have come up with a match (admittedly only at 12 markers so far).
So if anyone knows anything more about how Trotter and Jean (FAIRBAIRN) FAIRBAIRN, and James and Helen (GOODFELLOW) FAIRBAIRN link up, we'd all love to hear from you.
The representatives of these two families have come up with a 12/12 marker match with each other, and an 11/12 marker match with three of the previous tests, ie those of descendants of Archibald & Alison (CROSSER) FAIRBAIRN, William and Jean (WANLESS) FAIRBAIRN, and Archibald and Mary (GRIERSON) FAIRBAIRN.
The rest of the markers should be in shortly.
Feel free to add any comments to the FairbairnDNA blog at
http://fairbairndna.blogspot.com/.
Representatives of other lines most welcome to join in the fun.
Anyone out there descended from Robert and Janet (HOGARTH) FAIRBAIRN? The results in for that line have shown unexpected matches with several MONTGOMERY families, so a confirming lineage would be great.

Regards
Lorna
Project Administrator, FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/

Hello. My name is Roger Whybrew. My mother was Helen Fairbairn, her father Frank Fairbairn, his father George Fairbairn. George was Married to Laura and his daughter Laura b1886 I believe married Frederick Simpson in 1906 but went to Canada where they had three children. Which one are you related to. I am quite excited that at last a member of the family has turned up in Canada because there are memories only of Cissie who my mum was very fond of. I'm rambling. If we have a connection can we swap some info. I have a gedcom of over 1000 souls and most are related to my mum.
Roger
oldgeezerwhybrew@googlemail.com

Hello Lorna. George was born in Liverpool the son of Robert Fairbairn and Elizabeth Young. Robert was born in Eckford, Scotland in about 1799 and Elizabeth hails from Dunbarton, Scotland born in 1821. As you see Robert was a bit older than Elizabeth and she may have been a second wife. They were married in Blantyre Lanarkshire in 1847. Robert is described as a 'Civil Engineer' on birth certs. He is very much an elusive mystery though because he doesn't appear on either the Scottish or the English census' information (as far as I am able to find) that covers his wife and family. I have no death record either. I don't know whether he went abroad at all but some of his grand children through George went to Canada and America.
The family of Robert (specifically Robert junior and George) spent their adult life in the south of England and the London area.
Apart from younger Robert and George together with their mother their is little known about the rest of the family of Robert senior.
I hope this helps answer your question and makes some sense.

John - I'm just in from playing cards. I certainly hope that there is a connection here, and I do believe there is.
I am descended through Christiana Fairbairn d/o Robert Fairbairn and Helen Milne.

Robert is the son of Thomas Fairbairn and Elspeth Wood. This couple had eleven children: Isobel, Agnes, Euphamie, John 1st son, John 2nd son, George 1st son, Katherine, Elspeth, Robert (my ancestor), James and Thomas.

My own ancestor Robert came to N.A. circa 1836 as did his brothers James who married Margery Rose, and Thomas who married Mary Middlemiss (the aunt). This family was from the Eccles & Fogo Berwickshire Borders of Scotland. The daughter Isobel who married Alexander Luke did not come to N.A. but everyone of their children did.

Now James and Margery had an older son Thomas Allen who was born in Scotland who married 'Mary' maiden name unknown. They had a son George. Thomas Allen was a doctor who attended at Robert's (my ancestor), this Thomas died in California. He and at least two possibly three of his brothers went to California. I am rather certain this is your ancestor.

However, depending on the time frames for the birth of your family, it is possible that you may be connected to Thomas Fairbairn and Mary Middlemiss who also had a large family. But I don't think so.

Both Thomas and James raised their sons in the Detroit, Wayne Co. area and they were in the construction industry (joiners primarily) as was Robert originally. Robert and Helen came to Canada where they raised their children.

It is late here, so I am rather tired. Let's pursue this in the am when you may be able to give me some birth dates.
BTW my home e-mail is norma.chantler@sympatico.ca.

Sincerely

Norma (Niven) Chantler
Lorna,

I am not sure where to contact you about this, so I'm taking up space and doing it here.

I was looking at my neglected tree and noticed you had edited a 1910 federal census record for Joan Fairburn (Fairbairn), stating that William Lampson was deceased and that she was his widow.

She was my great-great grandmother (her daughter Phyllis Lampson was the mother of Margaret Wasmund, who was the mother of PeggyAnn Fish, my mother). I have a quilt that Phyllis completed at 96, in 1956, I believe.

I know from my mother that there were a group of relatives who lived in Quebec, I believe after living in Iowa (Onion Grove)and before moving to Detroit.

Do you have any info about this branch of the family other than the census correction?
