I also have Exelby ancestors in York. Elizabeth Exelby or Eshelby was my 3xgreat Grandmother, according to the 1851 census she was born in Heslington (then outside York, but now part of the city) probably in 1819. I have no more information yet, but intend to investigate further some time this year.

Try looking in York cemetery. Some of our Exelbys are buried there, and my brother noticed the next grave was an Eshelby and I think it was Elizabeth - but unfortunately didn't make a note, as it wasn't important at the time.

Thanks for the information about York Cemetery, I will track them down. I've used the York Cemetery website before, for some other surnames, and got some useful information from Hugh Murray's database of burial registrations.

Hi Kath
My name is Chris Gauntlett, I've just seen your enquiry re William Exelby (bn 1817 in York). He is in fact my GGgrandfather! Going down the line via William, William (+ Agnes Winteringham), William Noel ( + Dorothy Patchin), Joyce (+ Don Gauntlett) - my parents.
I have several generations but seem to be missing alot of detail.
If you help, I would love to hear from you - please!
My address is blugum01@optusnet.com.au

I've got a Harriett Eshelby who married my great grandfather, Anthony Walker at St Mary Bishophill Junior York in 1873. She was the daughter of Richard and Eliza Eshelby. It looks as though she died in 1879. My great grandfather married again, one of his sons being George Thomas Walker, my grandfather.

Have you any connections with these Eshelbys?

Hello Kath
Thanks for your reply!
As I probably mentioned before, William (bn 1817) is my GG grandfather, but I haven't gone any further back at this stage. If you send me your address, I'll send you what I have so far (gedcom or pdf file??).
I have a fair bit of info re more current Exelby's in Qld. Are you doing any other parallel surnames that are involved with the Exelbys?
regards,
Chris

William is in fact my G Grandfather - my mother being the youngest of 12 children of his 2nd son, you being descended from his elder son. I collect info on any surname that joins my list! hence lots, although I favour Exelby as it is relatively easy! I can go back to about 1700 thanks to another researcher, and have a reasonable amount of the Alexander Francis line. I also go back a long way with the Aitken - Williams wife, surname.

Please reply to kathdavis@btinternet.com
