Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
We are researching the Exelby's from St. Keverne, Cornwall, who, via Surrey and London, originated in Yorkshire. Anyone else researching these people??? :) Tracey Ord

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
My Exelbys didn't go to Cornwall - but suggest you look at FamilySearch as there are a lot more Cornish Exelbys listed than Yorkshire ones - when you get back to Yorkshire we may link up - this is a good line to search as we all seem to originate from one person - do you have the early history?

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
Dear Kath, I presume you mean the line back to Wimarc? Yes, we have that through to Yorkshire in the 1600's, but our earliest Exelby, a merchant taylor of London, is just said to be of Yorkshire, and the actual family there he is from isn't mentioned. Have you ever seen the book of the Exelby family by an Eshelby, written in the late 19th century? :) Tracey

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
Dear Cheryl, Yes that is the line we have worked on. I would be interested in any link in the 15th/16th Century between Miles Exelby of London (grand-father of Miles Exelby of St. Keverne) and the Exelbys of Yorkshire that you have. I have never found proof of a link, other than mention in the book of the Exelby's of Yorkshire written in the late 19th Century that Miles of London was of the family (no mention of his relation to the Exelby's then living in Yorkshire though). I have no doubt of the origins of the family of Miles probably being in Yorkshire, but have not found proof, despite searching many records. If you can supply information in that vein I would be most appreciative. Sincerely, Tracey Ord

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
Hi I saw your posting and wondered if we are researching the same line of Exelbys. My Exelbys start with Richard Exelby, born about 1728; place unknown, died 1806 in Copmanthorpe, married Jane Dunell Jan 29 1760 in Stillingfleet. This line carries through to my mother, Allura Exleby. In 1837 George Exelby came to the United States and settled in Britton, Michigan. I know that about the same time, some of the Exelbys went to Australia. I have never been able to take this line back any further than Richard 1728. Do you have Richard in your database? Most of this Exelby line settled in Copmanthorpe, just outside of Yorkshire. Any of these names sound familiar?

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
Hi,
I am afraid the Exelbys we have researched are descendants and ancestors of Miles Exelby, merchant tailor of London in the 1500's. His family desdended into Surrey, Sussex and Cornwall and his ancestors were from York, but he left York we believe in the late 1490's.
Good luck,
Tracey

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
Tracey - found an old post of yours to Mary Shawnee. You are both tracing the same Exelby line - your Miles Exelby in London (1573 - 1616) is 5x GG to her Richard Exelby in Yorkshire, via the St Keverne Exleby's who moved there when Miles Exelby (son) became Vicar of that parish. Some of the Exelby's returned to Yorkshire c. 1725. Mind you, this post is so old, I'm sure you've already worked all this out! Kind regards, Justine Harvey

Re: Exelby's of Yorkshire, England
I just knew somebody out there could connect the brick wall dots!! Do you have information on the Exelbys that returned to Yorkshire circa 1725? I can't link Richard Exelby to Miles because I don't know who his father is. I have the parish registry of his burial, so I know he was born about 1728, but I don't know where. (St. Keverne, you think?) Richard has been my brick wall for years. If you have any information, I would love to share! please email me at mshawnee1 at gmail dot com
