the following inquest report is taken from the 'south durham herald' in the former town of west hartlepool and dated saturday 23 october 1880:

inquest at hartlepool

on monday morning last, mr coroner settle held an inquest at the town hall, hartlepool upon the body of mr alfred excell, who was killed at the pier works, hartlepool. from the evidence given it appears that on saturday morning last, between seven and eight o'clock, the deceased and another man named woods were on a staging at work. suddenly the deceased fell to the ground, a distance of thirty feet, and his head coming in contact with a large block of concrete the body rebounded and fell into the water. it was at once taken out of the water, but life was quite extinct. doctor rawlings was of the opinion that death was instantaneous. the jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased died from injuries accidently received.
