Hi I'm looking for the family of George Exall, born Withington,Herefordshire, c1860. His father, also George. was born in Weston Baggett, Herefordshire, c1821. I've found him on the 1851 census (spelled Exhall), but earlier than that the trail goes cold. I'm wondering if there's a mis-transcribing/misreading of the name on the 1841 census. Is anyone else doing the Herefordshire Exalls? Thanks

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Well I have researched (very briefly) the Exalls for a friend. The Withington George was my friend's great grandfather. His father was George b Weston Beggard and his father was John Exall. I have a tree and the wives tree. The reason for doing this was that one Albert Ernest Exall (son of the Withington George) was killed at Vimy Ridge in 1917 and I recently photographed the war grave for my friend who lives in Wales. If I can be of further help (or you can for me) please contact/post

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Hi
I have just started researching the Exall family for my sister-in-law. Her mother was an Exall, the great-granddaughter of George born 1820. Could you let me know if the Alfred Ernest was a member of the Canadian forces please. I found An Alfred Ernest Exall who died on 9 Apr 1917 who was a private in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). Could this be the same man? His mother's name was given as Elizabeth Jane but this could be a mistake.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Hi Claire
The Exalls aren't my family: this was something I was researching for a friend - and I've forgotten most of it now! But I'll ask him if he knows anything about this, and get back to you. I seem to remember, from researching a similar discovery in my own family, that the Canadian military records are pretty good and are on the Internet - I was able to find my relative and confirm that it was indeed him, because it gave his UK birthplace. Life's a bit hectic at present, but when I have chance, I'll see if I can find any urls for you. Regards Anne

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Hello Claire I sent you a post yesterday but I suspect it has gone astray. Trying again with this. I have been researching the Exalls for a friend for whom Albert Ernest Exall was a great-uncle. You are right about him (but wrong first name - not Alfred) and he was killed at Vimy Ridge while serving in the Canadian Army. I attach some useful information in jpg format for you. My friend's grandfather was the George Simeon Exall in the family tree attachment and she lives in South Wales. Peter Hutchings Malvern Worcs

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Hi Peter,
Thank you so much for the information you sent (both messages seen). I did have the name as Albert but for some unknown reason typed Alfred! My sister-in-law is the granddaughter of George and Albert's brother, Richard Henry, who was born on 10th May 1903. Her mother was Richard's daughter, Joan, who unfortunately died on 2nd September and is being buried on Monday in South Wales. If there is anything I can help your friend with please let me know.

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Hi Claire Well - small world! I have just spoken to my friend Janet Roberts (nee Read) who lives in Pontllanfraith. As a result I am attaching a new family tree so you can see where Janet fits in. Janet would have gone to Joan's funeral in Oakdale but was away that day at a wedding in London. She thought that Joan's daughter is "Cheryl" keeping the Villager's pub in Oakdale? Janet said that Joan was a lovely person - pretty and vivacious. My wife, Marlene, who died last year, also came from Oakdale. She was a great friend of Janet and I was in school with her husband.
It is really nice to make these connections!
Best regards

Re: Exalls in Herefordshire
Hi Peter,
Nice to hear from you. It is a small world isn't it. It's Cheryl's sister, Andrea, who is my brother's partner. She was most interested to hear that someone else had been looking into the family. I'll be able to tell her who it is now.
kind regards.
Claire
